I got mine out when I was around 23. Just had novacaine. The pain meds they gave me for afterwords DID NOT work though. So I came out of the novacaine it hurt like a son of a gun. Finally my mom called the dentist after about 4 hours of throbbing pain and they ordered a different prescription. Boy did that make a difference!!! Good luck! Oh yes, don't use a straw afterwards either!

I was in highschool when I had mine cut out (they weren't grown in yet but were going to come in sideways) - if you have to have all 4 pulled/cut, do them all at once. For whatever reason my parents had mine done 2 at a time...so double the misery and pain. I was knocked out both times and had pain meds afterwards. My husband had his pulled about a year ago...there's just no easy way - it's not fun. Just take the pain meds. ![]() peapie |

I had mine out when I was 21 yrs old, I was put to sleep, so I don't remember the procedure. However, it seems to take a long time for me to heal. I remember them telling me I would be back to normal about a week later, but I was still in so much pain that I couldn't really chew. It took three weeks for me, but when DH had his out he good after about 5 days. I think everyones experience would be different. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Only advice I can give is, my dentist gave me sponge like toothbrushes to use for a few days after the surgery, since they are gentler on the teeth/gums, ask for a few more then what they gives you! Since I had such a rough time with my surgery my dentist ended up giving me a box of them. DH was happy we still had some left when he had his wisdom teeth pulled. Even though he was much better after 5 days, still took about another week before he was able to brush with a real toothbrush in the back of his mouth.

And I have a completely different story.... ![]() I got so ridiculously high on the laughing gas, I was laughing until 9:30 that night - when I wasn't sleeping. The oral surgeon's office called several hours after my surgery to check on me. They could hear me laughing in the background. When I went the next week for my check up all the office personnel were calling me giggles. ![]() I had NO PAIN and no bleeding afterwards. I was completely fine. The next day no one...including me...would have been able to tell I had anything done. The "best advice" will probably come AFTER you have yours done and you know how you are. Some people are like me, with nothing wrong at all and some people have it bad. I made the mistake of telling people I worked with I was having it done and got to hear about all their horror stories. I can't believe anyone thought THAT was going to be a GOOD idea! LOL! I was terrified before hand and it was all for nothing. Each person is going to have it different and only your dentist - or anyone who's seen your xrays and know how your teeth are - are going to be able to tell you what your mouth will do and what to expect. Do you really want to hear the horror stories BEFORE you have to go? People WILL post 'em, just be prepared!

My DS, who is 17 now, had to have all four of his impacted wisdom teeth taken out last year. Two out of the four were impacted into the bone and they had a tough time getting those out. He was knocked out for the surgery which started at 7am and they were done with him around 10:30 or 11am......he was pretty groggy afterwards and slept the majority of the day (it ONLY took 3 doses to knock him out but he's a big boy 6'2") . He didn't really remember anything that happened......we had to tell him. It was pretty funny though because the dentist got the biggest kick out of him....(surgery was done in December so they were all wearing Santa hats)....apparently while the knock out medicine was starting to take affect he comes to for a brief moment, looks around and says "ohhhhh...Merry Christmas all you Christmas people" and out he went again. His face was pretty swollen for about a week. He drank mostly clear gatorade the whole time....no straws.....soft food only (like scrambled eggs, applesauce, pudding, yogurt). What drove him crazy was that he couldn't get full on the stuff he was allowed to eat. It also took a long time before he could have stuff like Doritos, chips...anything that's crispy or crunchy that could jab him back there. You have to constanly clean out the wounds after eating. Oh yeah, the gauze has to be changed frequently after surgery because there is quite a bit of bleeding. I pretty much hung out in his room after he was brought home to rotate the ice pack from one side to the other and so I was there when he'd come to for a few minutes. He was given percocet for the pain and he pretty much used it to the max for the first few days and then he got to where he needed it less and less. Good Luck with your surgery.

Yep....I only had three (OK--one less to mess with!) and had one cut out and two pulled about 10 years ago. I was knocked out cold by the oral surgeon. I didn't feel a thing. DH drove me home, we put ice on each side of my face and I passed out cold for many hours! The pain was not bad (granted, I had pain pills at home after the medicine from the IV wore off-they even did the IV after they put the gas mask thingy on so I didn't feel that either!). The worst part for me was the taste of blood. But...I am very sensitive with the taste thing. Alka-Seltzer makes me heave! Only advice is put ice on your face IMMEDIATELY. It keeps down the swelling and helps with the pain. The next day, I was up and moving around and two days later, life was back to normal (w/some careful chewing!). All in all....not a wonderful experience but far from the worst in my life of medical procedures!

I had mine done when I was 25. All 4 were impacted. I was put out with the gas, it took about 45 minutes and I had no problems afterwards what-so-ever. I think I only took the pain pills for 2 days - no swelling or bruising at all. I was really worked up beforehand, but it was a total breeze. Don't use a straw until they say you can and do the rinses they suggest. Lisa

Like another said, not everyone's experience is the same! I think it was here that I read advice to see an oral surgeon instead of a dentist to have this done. One of my wisdom teeth was falling apart, I kept dealing with the pain because we didn't have dental insurance and I was sure it was going to be sooo expensive. What I didn't know then was that we would end up paying for almost the entire thing out of pocket anyway! Some insurance ![]() Anyway... I got the medication and the surgeon said he'd take my glasses when I started feeling it... I was like, I'm fine now... then as I was saying I wasn't ready, it kicked in lol.. next thing I know, I'm lying there and he comes by to take out the teeth on the right side (really easy) and I reminded him to get the left side where the bad one was.. didn't notice my mouth full of gauze! He already had it. Had help to the car, don't know how I managed to walk into the pharmacy and stand while the prescription was getting filled, but then we were on our way home again. Husband had me take a pill on the way home, made me soup when we got here and then I was tired. Woke up a few hours later, my mouth was just sore like I'd held it open too long, and I had pizza and Coke for dinner. The soreness was there for a few more days and that was it. No swelling, no bleeding. I didn't take any more pills besides the one I didn't really need on the way home. My husband's had to be cut out so I guess he expected me to feel like he did. |

My only suggestion is definately go to an oral surgeon. I had all 4 of mine out at different times, the first 3 I had out with a regualr dentist and had some sort of problem with all 3, the last one I had out at an oral surgeon and I had no pain, no problems, no sweeling, nothing, didn't even need to take Tylenol. One of my DD's had all 4 of hers out at the same time and she had no problems either, very minor swelling, no pain, she didn't even have to take Tylenol or anything either. They do say use ice directly after and we both did and didn't have any problems at all.

I got mine pulled like regular teeth. I do not know why they were not taken out earlier when they were stillimpacted, but they eventually came in and shifted my other teeth, and I had braces as a kid! I know my sister had hers taken out when she was a teenager, but I did not. Anyway, there were no complications and it was no big deal for. Also, I only had two instead of four.

My DS16 had his wisdom teeth removed last Tuesday. It was done by an oral surgeon and he was sedated for the procedure. His appointment was at 8 and we were on our way home at 9. Did you have to do any prep for the surgery? My DS needed to use a prescription mouthwash before the surgery. The surgeon started him on Amoxicillin and a steriod the morning of the surgery. He was also given Vicodin for the pain. |

My best advice is like others...ICE ICE ICE...What I did was I wet washclothes(wringing them out after) and then FROZE the washclothes in a long ways folded position and then after they were frozen put them against my jawline and TIED them on with a scarf. This kept them in place and molded to my jawline and I did not have to sit there holding ice on the jawline. It looked silly but oh well..It worked!

I think everyone is different. I had mine out 32 years ago. I was put to sleep. No pain at all. I ate a sub sandwich that evening. Both of my sons had theirs out in a study (it was free) and they had no pain. That was about 10 years ago. My dd had hers out in June of this year. She was put to sleep. She had some pain but just used Tylenol.

I can say that it's the best diet I ever went on!! I wasn't able to eat solids for a few weeks because it hurt so bad... So, I "lived" on spaghetti-oh's and mac and cheese. You could swallow that stuff pretty much whole and not choke. I remember being in college at the time and in a class that taught doctor's office procedures so we had to learn to weigh eachother on the doc office scales and when I finished the class (a six week class) I was 20 lbs lighter! Good luck with that! I just know I don't know which is worse, waking up with that pain or the spinal wearing off from a c-section...oh the horror!! The good outcome is there are TONS of CVS gift card offers floating around on the sd cvs coupon thread and you can score some xmas gifts with your pain meds script.

I had IV sedation. It was great. Little pain afterward, little swelling. I was eating soft foods the same night. Talking on the phone just after I came home. Only took one pain pill.

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck to you! I know that no matter the "size" of the surgery...big or small...it is natural to be worried. I, too, wonder about the after effects and the pain. I remember very well getting all of my wisdom teeth out a few years ago. The wonderful reason that I remember it so well, is that I remember absolutely no discomfort during or after the surgery. Now keep in mind something. Do read this next part without giving up on my story here. I promise there is a light at the end of the tunnel...lol. I've given natural childbirth. 9 hours, 2 minutes apart, no drugs, no tears, no screaming. (I have the video to prove it ) I have a now 2 year old (the star of the video) who, in the last 2 weeks, has discovered that throwing objects (mostly toys) at the speed of sound is waaaaaaaaaaay better than just picking them up, playing with them, putting them back down and getting a new toy. So, needless to say, I get 20 heavy objects thrown directly at my skull about 20 times a day now. I just stop for a minute and keep going, unlike my husband who talks about the pain even if it's a 2oz stuffed monkey. Why am I telling you this? I know it sounds like I'm saying that I have a higher pain tolerance than Rocky himself, so therefore of course the wisdom tooth thing wouldn't hurt, right? Wrong. Yes, I guess I do have a decent pain tolerance. BUT...and this is a BIG BUT! The dentist will send me into a nervous ball of wreckage every single time. From cleaning to pulling. That is the only significant pain and fear I can truly remember throughout my life. I've always had a very big fear of anything dentist. I do it all. Cry for 3 days beforehand, cry when I'm getting out of the car to go in, cry when they call my name, cry when the "monster" comes in, cry when I see to power tools...ALL of the above...ALL the time. Now, again...for my point. I SWEAR I am getting to it and here it is. The question at hand: Wisdom Teeth removal... That procedure is the only dentist experience I don't recall as being the most horrible thing that could have just been done to me. From the sleep medicine (GREAT stuff BTW - anyone know if they sell this OTC? LOL) to the NO discomfort afterwards, to the surprising practically pain free healing process...everything. VERY positive experience. Unlike any other visit I had experienced to the dentist before. So, long story short. One persons unnatural fear of dentistry, turns good. Also another thing to keep in mind. At least this is my experience. They do send you home with some good pain relievers. Strong and effective. Even though I wasn't in extreme pain and kept telling myself (in the beginning) that I didn't really need the medicine, I still chose to take it. Every 6 hours as prescribed...just as a preventative. They, of course, gave me the same medicine after surgery and then sent me home with a prescription. So, on the way home we went by the pharmacy and had to meds filled. Like clockwork, just in case, I took my dose. I can honestly tell you that I remember very little (if any) real pain from this. No bad memories, no recovery issues, etc. THIS is coming from a woman who remembers every cleaning, every filling, every dentist procedure since I was 4. Yes. Really. Now, this is just my experience. I know a lot of people remember discomfort as this can be an evasive procedure. I do believe, if done correctly, you should find the discomfort bearable. Just my .02 (HEY, you may not even need the sleeping medicine, I might have just accomplished the same coma like state in telling you this story). lol. Hope this helped...and most of all have a great day and try not to worry!

Mine came out @ age 19. My face was practically square from the swelling and the entire jawline was bruised. Pain was minimal, though. Be sure to ask for the little curved plastic syringe they have to use warm water for flushing the area daily. That should help the healing process. If they tell you not to spit, please follow that advice. I didn't and my bleeding was so bad, my mother's white bathroom looked like a crime scene. She wasn't happy and neither was I. On the up side, DH had his out in his early 20's and was eating a hamburger that night. Other posters are right, everybody is different. Apparently we all lived through it and you will, too. Good luck! |

All in all it wasnt too bad. Not being knocked out meant I got to see the fun of my top right tooth fly across the room when it was pulled out! Very entertaining for the OS and his assistant. Afterwards my dh drove me home and we filled my prescription for Vicodin. I took tylenol and crashed for about 6 hours. Then I woke up, cooked dinner for the kids and I was fine. I was so dissappointed, I was supposed to be moaning on the couch watching dvd's and getting sympathy. I never even got to use my Vicodin. Hope yours goes as well. I was a sophmore in High School when I had mine removed. All 4 were impacted, so I had them all removed at the same time. It was super easy - they put me to sleep, and when I woke up, it was done. No pain afterwards - I was off shopping at the mall with friends a few hours later! :O) |

I had 5, yes 5, fully impacted wisdom teeth removed when I was 22. They knocked me out, but I remember drifting in & out and remember a few things, but didn't feel any pain. The pain meds they gave me made me feel worse than the pain, so I didn't take much fo them. The one thing I wish they had told me was where in my mouth the stitches were. The next morning after the 'surgery' I was starving, but was afraid to eat because I thought I would pop my stitches. As my mouth healed, I figured out that the stitches were not at all where I thought they were and I could have been eating all the time with no problem. I also wish they made some kind of thing to go around my head and hold the ice packs -- my arms got tired holding one on each side all the time <lol>. Sarah......... |

I had mine out at 16, and can remember in detail what I was wearing that day, and that the IV was hung from a plant hook, but nothing at all afterwards. My mouth was more stiff then painful afterwards, and the dissolving stitches were sort of creepy feeling. Apparently, one tooth had another tooth behind it, so I may have to have it removed too.

Had all 4 of mine out at age 19, done by a Navy dentist (best DDS I *ever* had). Nothing but Novacaine, and he gave me a mirror to watch it all (at my request - I'm weird, I like to see that stuff, had a nerve block, lots of happy juice, and watched my elbow being reconstrcuted in my early 20's ;-) I have an extremely low tolerance for pain, usually need lots more sedation than most folks ( the ole red headed higher sedation needs deal), but my wisdom teeth were a breeze. Was on the beach the next day. Was given 3 days off work (was in the military) afterwards and it was free vacation time for me. MZ |

I had my four, fully impacted wisdom teeth out when I was 25. I was fully knocked out for the entire time and don't remember anything from a few seconds after they administered the meds to knock me out until I half woke up, in the recovery room, hiccupping while my mom tried to figure out my Palm Pilot to find a good time to schedule my follow-up appointment. I slept for about four or five hours after I got home and then spent the rest of the day lounging on the couch, watching a bit of tv and eating popsicles. For ice packs, I took a long soccer sock, put two ice packs in it and tied it around my head. It looked incredibly silly (mom was very restrained in not taking pictures) but it helped. I was pretty swollen for the next few days but otherwise easily able to function. My mouth swelled in rather than out, so I didn't really look too bad. The pain meds made me feel woozy, so I generally just took ibuprophen every few hours. Afterwards, I did have a bit of numbness/tingling above my upper lip on one side. The oral surgeon said he wasn't terribly surprised as one of my teeth was turned sideways and had a root hooked onto the nerve. He had to cut the tooth into eight pieces to get it out. Fortunately, the numbness was temporary and went away after a few weeks. Overall, it went a whole lot better than I imagined it would/could have. |
