I am on the environmental committee at my DS' elementary school We are brainstorming on ways to make the school more "green". We have tons of ideas, but I wanted to throw it out here because you ladies (and gents) always come up with things I don't think of. Thanks! Renee |

How about some type of garden? Planting some trees to help keep the play ground cool? On nice days turning off the air or heat and open windows? How about teachers using chalkboards for problems instead of making copies (may not use less paper, but will use less energy and other supplies)? On nice days turning off the lights and eating outside, (maybe hold some classes outside)? Judy |

Using real silver wear at lunch instead of disposable. What do use for trays? Are they reusable or thrown away? After lunch, the kids should have a recyclable trash can for plastics and aluminum cans. Making changes in the lunchroom can make a huge difference.

My dds elementary & middle schools both have those big green bins outside for paper/magazine recycling. The schools each get money from what's collected there and anyone can put paper in them. Each of the classrooms at the elementary have a box for recycling paper. Each pod has a large trash can for recyling that the classes each dump their boxes in when it gets full and the custodian dumps into the big green bin outside. They used to have contests between the 3 pods about recycling, but they don't do that anymore..they quit when the parents started bringing paper from home into the school and putting into their childs pods instead of putting it in the big bin outside!
