You're not lower class sweetie, you're just not as status conscious as many people are. Never feel like you "don't fit", most New Yorkers don't fit either, that's why they're there. I lived in NYC for quite a while and have been to shows wearing both jeans and formal wear. It depends on the show and when you go. Your best bet would go in something dressy/casual and comfortable. Bring or wear comfortable shoes in case you feel like wandering around a bit. Here's a review for Spring Awakening from the Times Spring Awakening - Theater - Review - New York Times It sounds wonderful!

I live in NYC and have been to a few shows recently. People really dress very casual for Broadway nowadays. Just wear whatever you're comfortable wearing. Very few people "dress up" unless it's opening night. I've never seen Spring Awakenings, but I know it's gotten good reviews. I saw Jersey Boys this year - it was great. Wicked and Chorus Line were really good, too. I know a lot of people love Mama Mia (I've seen it a couple of times because I took my classes to see it) but I wasn't that crazy about it. Although the music is fun, the story is pretty weak. Anyway, go, have fun, and you'll fit right in no matter what you wear!

It's been about 9 years since my last Broadway show (Rent) but people were dressing casually back then and I'm sure it's even more casual now. I would wear something nice but comfortable. I hope you have a great time. Seeing a show on Broadway is sooo exciting.

Nothing to be scared of here in good old NY..lol we are a diverse group. Usually only opening night is a dressy affair, casual dress will fit right in. Make sure you come back and let us know how it went, and have FUN!

I've never been to a Broadway show (a dream...) but in Denver, most people are dressed business casual for the evening shows. I usually wear a dress or slacks with heels. There are some people who dress REALLY casual but not many. I would think NYC would be more dressy than Denver but from the replies, I guess not Not seen in NYC but in Denver Wicked and Chicago were FAB.

I know it's easier to say, then to do........but just go out and enjoy the time with your DH, and don't worry about what everyone else might be thinking or doing! The evening is about you and DH! Hope you have a great time, and you'll have to let us know how it goes.

Oh definitely go for it! I took my teens to NYC in 2005....we didnt do a show, but now we wish we would have spent the extra $$! Times Square is amazing....very clean and safe for us....my brother saw Dave Matthews and his band in a bar just hanging out! We did a sunset harbor cruise that was fun. Take lots of pics.....I have the most amazing scrapbook pages from our trip.....I saved everything--ticket stubs, tourist flyers, etc etc. Totally embarassed my kids by asking people to take our picture.....Planet Hollywood waiter was a cutie! but so what.....it was a once in a lifetime trip for us! Really, I tried to look cool and all, but then I lost my mind and acted like a total tourist! Well, really, I was one!

A little black dress or pantsuit can go a long way. Dress it up with pearls and a wrap and still feel comfortable and you can easily dress down or take off your accessories if you feel over dressed or start to feel uncomfortable. I love to "dress up" for the theater but I don't do dresses very often, a nice pant suit and some accessories can go just as far. Congrats on time alone with hubby. Have a wonderful time wherever you go and whatever you do, enjoy yourselves and have fun! - Jenn |

I would wear whatever matches your most comfortable shoes. Not sneakers, but something for walking would be good. And you will see folks from all ends of the spectrum, some dressed nicer than you and some who looked like they just rolled out of bed. Don't you worry about it, no one will notice what you wear but you and DH.Have fun!
