Ideas for Lego storage

Help -- Legos are taking over my house, but since they are one of the only toys my DS truely loves and plays with all the time, they get to stay.

Does anyone have any good storage ideas. DS says he wants to sort them by size & color and store them that way. We are currently using ziploc bags and that is not working -- I need some kind of plastic container, preferably with a lid (in case it gets dropped).

We have two that fit under my son's bed. One is flat with wheels and a lid. The other is a flat mylar board that we attached wooden sides to so that they don't fall out (about 1 inch high). He uses this one for building on and storing incomplete projects on. He also has one bin w/ lid that fits in the cubbies that we set up in his closet (purchased at Costco). This one holds his Duplos; that he still likes to play with at age 10! Luckily, storage is not a problem in his room.

I know the feeling of toooo many Legos! -- OUCH on my feet and sometimes right into the vacuum!

But... he loves his Legos and so they are here to stay.

We had the same problem, I went out and bought a MDF shoe holder, that had 15 cubicles. Then I measured the holes and went on a hunt, I found plastic bins that had latch down lids that fit perfectly. I then just labeled the outside boxed with either colors, or the names of sets inside. Since DS has quite a few sets the build airplanes, boats etc. we ended up buying extra plastic containers, and DH cut the extra containers then used epoxy to make sections inside the whole containers. DS playroom has never been so clean. Good luck!

If you have an Ikea in your area, they have all kinds of storage solutions. My son who is 26 loved legos. He could build with the little legos from age 3 by just looking at the box. He now designs webpages.

I dont know how many legos that he has but when my oldest son was about 2 or 3 he was way into sorting his legos. We bought tackle boxes with the little drawers so that he could sort out the speciality pieces, like people, trees, windows and such. Then we just bought some rubber made containers and he sorted the rest however he saw fit.

My son is now 16 and we still have all the tackle boxes and totes.

this is right up my alley!

we use one of those plastic storage "racks" that have about 9 plastic bins that sit on the shelves. the bins are sorted by brick piece. then we have a huge shallow plastic container that any piece can go into. every now and then, i go through the big container and sort into the little bins, i find it quite soothing!

i've seen those boxes that you put the bricks into the top, and they filter down by size. they looked pretty neat, but DS has way too many legos for that.

i just packed away all the thomas trains (sniffle!) because he's way more into legos than his trains anymore. hopefully he'll be into legos for lots of years to come!

If your son is not into sorting them, this is what we did.

I bought one of those large, plastic with fabric backing tablecloths. They are cheap, a few bucks. Mine is rectangular shaped, but you could get an oval, square or round too.

We also have a large plastic container that has a lid that snaps on.

We laid out the tablecloth, and poured all of the legos on them.

DS plays with the legos on that tablecoth (he lays it on the floor). It's big enough, and even when he moved onto the carpet with some legos, the majority of them stay on the cloth.

When he needs to clean up, he just picks up each corner of the tablecloth, lifts it up and places the whole thing in the bucket.

It made life so much easier! We have thousands of legos, and they were the worst to clean up!
