Smile Need gift ideas for Health Professionals who are keeping my daughter alive.

In a nutshell my DD has been in hospital 5 times this month for serious illness. I am deeply greatful for to several nurses and doctors from different teams for all their hard work, caring and dedication to my Daughter. She is 16 and it is a really tough age to be so sick plus isolated to your room as they are doing tests. These people in my opinion have gone above and beyond taking care of my daughter.
I need some ideas that will be nice to give to these surgeons, nurses and her primary doctor. I have quiet a few so I am not looking to break the bank. I will probably give more to her primary though. Also as you are giving me ideas please say a prayer.

Thanks

Is she still in the hospital? If so, what about taking some GOOD chocolates in and sitting them in her room w/a little note of thanks?

Or drop off some at the nurse's station if she isn't.

What about taking in for all of them to enjoy: single serve cocoa packets, coffee singles, "gourmet" cookies, nuts, stuff like that? Do it up in a basket, wrap it in cellophane and stick a card of thanks. You could do one for the nurses and for each of the "team" of drs.

I'm afraid I'm not much help.

I have had many clients give me gifts and my favorites are gift cards and the nice lotions. I wash my hands soooooo many times a day and the lotions that are provided with work are not that great and I realllly like getting nice lotions.

My mom used to send a basket from Cheryl and Co. to the nurse's station at my Grandma's nursing home. They loved it.

Hey Ora,
I try to bring baked goods every once in a while to the hospital-they do seem to appreciate it, and I know it doesn't go to waste because not long after I come, everyone has a mouthful. I did also stop and get some munchkins from DD once. Those seemed to be well received as well. You could also stop at Starbucks or DD and get a "box" of coffee. The coffee sux at our hospital! We did get Patrick's two primary nurses customized hats ( inside jokes w/ each nurse), and Patrick picked out a Metallica shirt for his oncologist. Hmmm, haven't seen him wear it yet-wonder why? lol...
BTW, how IS your daughter doing?

Thanks for asking. She is home on a medicine that is a crap shoot whether or not it will work. They can't get any specific organism so hard to treat. She really has had a rough patch the last few years but this past month is just terrible for her. We were on our last day of IV on Saturday and she broke thru. Has missed most of this school year as a junior which has been really tough on her. Crossin my fingers that we sqeak thru the weekend. She will be going for surgery within the month if she can get stable. Please keep the ideas coming. I was thinking of hand lotions and the coffee gift cards so I can give them each a personalized gift.

I work in health care and my favorite gift is a Thank You note. I have had the same Thank You cards on my desk for 7 years! When I'm having one of those days I read them. I encorage my staff to share their notes and post them on a big bulletin board in the break room. When someone gets a new one it's a big deal! As a department we gift group gifts at Christmas from our patients but when the gift is gone so are the memories.

When my son was hospitalized, the "night nurse" there was an angel-- way above and beyond the call. I sent her a handwritten thank you note, as well as her supervisor.
A friend of mine in a similar situation collected donated toys for the pediatric "toy room" at the hospital.
Home baked goodies are appreciated.
God Bless, and I'll say a prayer for your daughter.
Keep us posted, please!

My mom and all of my sisters are nurses. There favorite thing also are handwritten notes of thanks. They have saved all of them. A handwritten note is a vanishing art and is more precious as time goes by.

My daughter was also in the hospital frequently as was I recently. Got to know lots of the nurses. We used to bring in stuff on different shifts so that everyone could have something. DH would bring in donuts or bagels in the morning for the "break room", and would bring in platters of cookies for the station. Chocolates to leave at the station for each shift is also a good idea.

My surgeon is a wonderful man, and I sent an "Edible Arrangements" to his office and staff when I got home, and also sent them a nice gift basket that they could share at Christmas. I know how thankful you feel to each of them, and even the cookies and candies will be sooo much appreciated and probably wouldn't break the bank, while still expressing your gratitude.

my DFIL wrote a letter to the editor of our local paper after a hospital stay to thank the staff for his care.

He had no idea what the out come of that letter did. His Doctor thanked him for it because the hospital made a huge deal out of it and posted it for the staff to see with a letter from the head of the hospital next to it also thanking him. He said it did more for the moral to the staff than he could ever have imagined.

I am an RN who works in a cancer center. It is not an easy job and is very emotional at times. Can I tell you that the BIGGEST AND GREATEST thank you of all is a card? A simple smile and thank you are the greatest joy of all.
I have recieved some nice gifts over the years however a simple thank you goes a long way.

I was in a re-hab hospital for 6 weeks last year. During that time my physical therapist received a few gift cards. She had to turn them over to the hospital as it was against hospital policy to recieve monetary gifts from patients. She told me that the hospital employees were only allowed to receive "token gifts". I ended up giving may of the nurses, techs, and therapists a hand-written thank you card as well as a small gift (such as lotion, candle, etc.) They were greatly appreciated.

This is really such an important thread.

I'm sure all of us are grateful to find out what patients and their families can do to express their appreciation for the care they receive.

Whenever Michael was in the hosptial for long periods I would get 2 baskets, one I would fill with candy both regular and sugar free, another basket with lotions etc. the travel sizes and just leave them on the nurses main station. I found out the Dr.s hang there too...they always liked those...and I always made sure there was sugar free for those who could not eat the regular candy.

I think that the recommendations from the actual gift receivers are more reliable, b/c only they know if a gift is greatly appreciated. The gift giver just hopes the gift is well received.

Food is always nice, such as bakery items or deli trays.

As a health care worker we are not actually aloud to accept gifts, for fear a patient will receive favorable treatment. So the best gifts to get are things like baked goods, candy and such left for the entire staff. It is always very appreciated and goes quickly. When working at the desk it is always nice and fattening at holiday time. lol
