| Mystery Shoppers Beware
OLATHE, Kan. -- A Johnson County woman has been victimized by a mystery-shopper scam.
Westwood police said the woman answered an ad seeking mystery shoppers, and soon was given her first assignment -- to test the Money Gram wiring service. She followed her supposed employer's directions to cash a $2,900 check and wire all but $300 of it to a person in Canada.
But Thursday the grocery store that cashed the check found out that it was no good.
Police said they believe the woman was not involved in the crime, warning that anyone who cashes a fake check could be held responsible.
The scheme is similar to fake lotteries and the Nigerian money scam in which victims are asked to wire money to receive a larger amount of cash, but the return never comes.
