Best HOMEMADE Halloween Costumes???

I am one who always goes the homemade route for Halloween costumes unless I feel that the kids will re-use their store-bought costumes (they go in the Costume Box for daily play).

Our best year was when my oldest was Luigi (tall) and youngest was Mario (short). Very simple to do with red and green turtlenecks and baseball caps with a big white *L* and *M* on them... They wore blue jeans and white suspenders made from wide elastic.

So, what have been some of your kids' best homemade costumes over the years!?

Thanks for sharing...

My best was when I took cardboard boxes and made my kids into Pop-Tarts for Halloween. DD was a box of PowerPuff Girls PopTarts. The front of her was the design for the front of the box. The back of her was the cooking instructions. DS was the wrapped package from in the box - silver with the word Kelloggs all over them.

My only homemade costume for my kids was two years ago, and they won a costume contest in our neighborhood! They were dice! I took two big boxes (don't remember where I got them), cut out holes for their heads, and holes on each side for their arms. I removed the bottom opf the box. I then covered the entire box with white felt and cut out circles for the dice spots for each side. That was it! I can post a pic for someone if you like. It was really easy!

HTH,
Suzanne

P.S. This was originally seen in Family Fun magazine a few years ago.

We've done christmas stockings and presents, a bumblebee, a horse from a cardbord box, a eerie hotdog vendor, a bubblebath with B in a showercap, a trashcan man, a christmas tree, a black widow spider, a pumpkin man (pumpkin head with corn stalks for his body), a washing machine, a pot full of flowers. We do our own. This year, C wants to be a mummy. Fun fun.

My DD was Little Bo Peep years ago - my favorite home made costume!

I bought a big frilly, old fashioned dress w/petticoat (at Goodwill), and she had a "lamb" collection - lots of little stuffed lamb animals. I safety pinned them all over her dress. I let her use a little walking stick that I covered w/light purple streamers. She was adorable! There were probably about seven beanie baby sized lambs attached everywhere on her dress. Idressed her little sister as a little lamb, too. But I think she looked the part on her own, anyways.

My best costume for myself was when my Mom made me up to be The Flying Nun!

Image:The Flying Nun.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Everything...I mean EVERYTHING, right down to that goofy hat - was done with my costume. I loved wearing it, I didn't want to take it off when I got home! Every house I went to commented on what a wonderful costume it was.

I remember seeing a picture of me in it, but unfortunately it was so long ago, I'm sure it's lost. But, that's definitely one costume I will NEVER forget!

Best homemade that I've done for my kids is Pillsbury Doughboy - white sweats stuffed with batting, white face paint, and a disposable chef's hat with the Pillsbury label colored on it. We'd poke him and he'd let out the little giggle.

In college, a bunch of us went as our student IDs - poster board front and back framed our faces for the "picture" - very cute.

I still remember when I was little my mom went in a box decorated as a "brick" and my dad as a workman carrying a trowel (the "brick layer") .... wasn't until looking at the photo album many years later that I got it. LOL

Last year I went as gum on the bottom of a shoe. Dressed in a pink sweatsuit, with a cheap pink wig and a tennis shoe that sat on my head and tied under my chin

One year I went as a bag of Jelly Beans. Dressed in black, Put leg holes in a clear garbage bag and filled the bag with those bean looking balloons and my DH drew a jelly bean logo and made up a brand and we put it on the front. I had to keep moving the balloons to sit down, it was a pain the the costume was cheap, easy and pretty cool

I made the most awesome Indian costume for my son when he was around 6 0r 7. I still have it. It was so cool!! I took some adult size (small) suede bell bottom pants I found at a second hand store. I also got an old tweed looking knit vest. I cut off the bell bottom part and sewed them to the vest for sleeves. I took alot of tucks in what was left of the pants and hemmed them for the bottoms. Put a turtleneck under the vest, paint on his face, feather headband and tomahawk. I also found a squarish homemade corduroy bag type thing with drawstrings. I sewed a bunch of beads and Indian looking patches on it for his treat bag. It was sooooooo cool!! My other favorite was for my other son when he was around six and wanted to be a crash dummy. That one was pretty cool too.

What a creative list!

'Brick' and 'brick layer'... hmmm... LOL.

I love hitting up the thrift store and Goodwill for costume accessories.

When mine was 2 or 3 I mad him into a King of Hearts playing card. I took a pillowcase and cut out a place for his head then did the other cutouts (K & hearts) with felt and glued them on. Quick and easy.

I helped my neighbors do Mario and Luigi last year and they were probably easiest costumes I've done, and they were very very cute.

Right now I'm working on a Kirby costume, and I feel like pulling my hair out doing it!

My two little ones who have newly made princess dresses are now going to be cupcakes after some help from allinaugust (Thank You!)

Now if the rest of the game will make up their minds all ready....I need to get started
