Anyone have any experience with Seizures?

Yesterday morning around 9am (Iwas at the store) my 11 yr old son (who is autistic and asthmatic) collapsed on the kitched floor and had a seizure. He has never had one before. Dh said he was non responsive and not breathing. My oldest DD called 911 while Dh attended to DS, he finally came to, spent the day in the ER, and he seems to be fine now, doesn't like that he can't remember anything from yesterday morning. We have been referred to a neurologist, but can not be seen for almost 3 weeks. The Dr.s at the ER told us it was no big deal and nothing to be worried about.....That didn't sit right with me....

Does anyone have any experience with Seizures, can you just have one out of the blue and never have another one?

TIA

my sister is on medication to control seizures - she had a head injury when she was 12 and now at 45 is still on meds for them. the only times she's had them that i can remember, is when she didn't take her meds - she would think she's OK, but she would soon find out that without her medication, she would have a seizure. they are very scary to witness and i'm sure even scarier to go through! the meds DO work for her though, so in her case they are controlled.

I have epilepsy

I have epilepsy that is controlled by meds. I had my first seizure out of the blue when I was 18, there is no known cause for mine, it just happened. I had it controlled enough at one point to stop taking meds, but two days after I had my DS I had multiple seizures back-to-back for hours (they blamed it on no sleep and raging hormones). I don't want to go through that again, so I haven't tried going without my meds again.

I can't imagine going 3 weeks without some kind of follow-up or diagnosis. Did they do an EEG in the ER? Did they do a Cat Scan? If it wasn't caused by a fever, I would make darn sure they could tell me more than "it was nothing to be worried about." I would try another Neurologist or try talking to his office staff to see if you can get in sooner.

To answer your question, you can just have one and never have another, but it doesn't mean you won't and it doesn't mean there isn't a cause for it that should be looked into.

I hope this helps, I know how scary this must be for you.

Renee

Thanks for the replies.....DS is getting a little upset with Mom today cause I'm not wanting to let him out of my sight. I have tried to bugging the peeps at central appts. to see if I get him at another military post faster. I'm willing to drive if I have to, not a prob. So hopefully that will help.

The tested his sugar and did do a Catscan, which were both fine. He was not, nor has been sick. He hit his head when he collapsed, so he has abbrasions on the side of his face, and chipped a tooth. He is so bothered by the fact that he doesn't remember anything about yesterday morning.

Hopefully if I keep bugging them enough I'll be able to get him in sooner......

Yes, you can have one and never have another.

Just an FYI (and I'm not trying to scare you), but because he hit his head when he fell--he may be prone to a seizure because of the head injury. While I don't necessarily think you should be too terribly worried, it is something that you need to follow up on. I also think you should follow up sooner than later--if for no other reason than to give yourself some peace of mind.
I would call your pediatrician or family doctor and ask that they see your son, and then let THEM call and make an appt w/ a neurologist. Often times, out of professional courtesy, a specialist will see a patient faster if the referring physician calls and schedules the appointment. Plus, if there are any other tests that the neuro would like ran, your family doctor can start on those and then when you do see the neuro--you'll be a couple steps ahead of the game.

My DS had what I think was a seizure a few months back (I posted about it at the time). I took him to the doc also and she just wasn't real concerned. Just kindof If he has another we'll look into then. I did insist on something be done. She did blood work. She also sent him for an echocardiogram to check for mitral valve prolapse. Everything came back normal and he hasn't had anything of the sort again.

I hope your sons doing better today I'm sure it scared the holy moly outta him.

I agree with you. Dr's offices can get you in earlier if they call. Ds's dermatologist wouldn't see him for months. The peds office called and begged and got him in (at the faraway office) in less than a week.

When my dd was 6, she had a grand mal seizure. She stopped breathing (I have found out since then that some people stop breathing but then start breath on their own.) Called 911. Went through tests etc days later to find nothing set it off. The only thing that I was told is that she had a double ear infection (no fever). Since she had major surgery on her ears, the doctor thought it was the ear infection pressing on her brain. She is 24 and has never had another.

My dh had viral encephelatis about 2 1/2 years ago. He now has a seizure disorder from it. Nothing shows on EEG or MRI but they have witnessed them. He has 3 types: his right arm will shake and not stop until he takes a certain med, he will pass out (no shaking just looks like he is sleeping) and one type that paralazed his left side for a few hours to 24 hours (unless he takes a certain med). He use to have 4 or 5 a day but for the last 1 1/2 years he is only having them 2 to 3 times a week (mainly at night when he is tired) The doctor said it is a slow process but we are hoping to have them controlled.
His seizure always start with a headache. He got encephelatis after having shingles (twice on his arm and lastly on his face)

Thanks....I called our Peditrician, who will be seeing him tommorow morning, and we'll go from there....I am watching him like a hawk, and so are is brothers and sisters. We can't help, but I think we're starting to bother him.....being autistic he already needs his space at times, but we're probably pushing it to far for any child....I just can't help myself I love all my childrern so much, but he has been through so much in his 11 years, and I hope it's not wrong but he holds an extra special place in my heart. These past couple of months have been hard, he stopped breathing a couple of months ago due to a reaction from h is vaccines, so I need to make sure I mention that......sorry lack of sleep equaled with stress and concern, making me ramble...

thanks so much for all the info.

Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Information Page: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

This is what Michael has..he takes depakene and topamax.
It almost sounds like your son had a *drop seizure*
Here is a excellant page with links I have used over the years, I did not check to make sure all links were active but they should be.

General Information About Epilepsy

My 15 year old son is under the autism spectrum, PDD-NOS. I thought he was having slight seizures where he'd roll his eyes three years ago. After the MRI which concluded that these were just tics, I made him aware he was doing it and he tried to control them which he does a really good job of it. He has never had a seizure. I have read that 30% of autistic children do have seizures.

I should clarify Michal is not autistic, Daniel is...he has had a few thing which were iffy on the seizure scale but not enough to show up on a eeg....but I was told he was high risk for them,.

went the Peds this morning......they are going to see if they can get him into nero sooner.....Keeping my fingers crossed. In the mean time, they have ordered a second Catscan, since he is still having headaches, an MRI, and EKG and an EEG, along with ton of bloodwork.

thanks for all the info.....
