Red face What could cause burning from a tree?

I was breaking a dead branch off an oak tree and all of a sudden my forearms were both burning horribly. I ran to the hose and washed them off but it wasn't really helping. I came in and put ice packs on and that helped. Now I have red itchy welps all over my arms. I took an antihistime and put Benedryl cream on my arms. What in the world could it be?

Deb~ I hate say this it sounds like your Oak tree had some poison Oak or Ivy on it sure does sound like it my DH is horribly allergic to both and this has happened to him several times this year while at work removing tree limbs. Unless there were fire ants that you didnt see on the branches that bit you thats another thing I think they are down there where you are at.

You did exactly what you needed to do with the antihistamine and Benadryl

I know for sre it wasn't fire ants. I would have seen them.

Did he have immediate burning? It started burning as soon as the branch snapped.

The cream really helped with the itching. I suggest everyone have some in the medicine cabinet. It's the second time this week we have sed it. My DS got stung by a wasp this past weekend and it really helped with his swelling.

sounds like poison oak to me too....as soon as you break the branch and the "liquid" seeps out of the leaves or bark, you've had it.

I guess we'll see how it does tomorrow. I'll take Benedryl tonight before bed. It puts me right out.

My son did the same thing a few years ago. He touched a tree in our back yard and it caused his to have red welts and a burning sensation. After we got the initial burning to stop, the welts went away in an hour or so and it didnt bother him.

I think that he was having an allergic reaction of some kind and when we washed him up really well and treated the burning sensation, he was better. I can tell you that it made a lasting impression on him and he will not touch that tree anymore.

Hope you feel better soon.

Dh burns and he breaks out very quickly and he actually has asthma like symptoms with it, there have been times he has been just near poison ivy and broke out , Poor guy I remember back in 1987 I was pregnant and he worked for a shopping center and they had him clearing brush from the bushes and he had protective stuff on and came home broken out we tried to treat him at home he got so bad and started breathing funny within 2 hours of getting home we had to go to the ER, it was the first time he was exposed and it was bad, somehow I managed to get poison ivy from him so there I was pregnant on bedrest itching with a DH broken out from head to toe, there was not a spot on his body without poison ivy, poor guy he ended up changing jobs after that and here he is working maintenance in our complex and still gets exposed to it once in awhile, the last two episodes Workmans comp covered his Doctors visits, meds and 3 days off to get better. honestly he could be covered head to toe in plastic and I know he would still have a reaction.

That's pretty much what happened. No welts this morning. Must have been an allergic reaction.

Thanks for all of your help.

Glad to hear you feeling better

Does sound like an allergic reaction since it's gone, hopefully you won't have to go through that again, I think anything else that has to be done to or near the tree you should have someone else do!

Turns out it's not poison ivy. I still have the rash but no real itching. Discussed it with my Mom and she said it sounds like a weed called "stinging nettle". Sure enough, there was a plant of it on the fence right under the branch that I broke off.

Mystery solved!

Leave it to our Mom's to solve the mystery.
