Question ? for those with indoor dogs

How often do you take your dog "out"? Some days our English Bulldog only goes out maybe 3 times a day.....sometimes more, but not very often,

Also was wondering, does anybody have a dog, that sits down and starts licking you like you were covered in gravy? Sometimes I sit down on the couch and the dog jumps up and just starts licking and licking and licking my feet or legs.....sometimes arms....I can't stand this! I have stopped wearing any scented creams to see if this would help but it didn't....Do other dogs do this too?

I'd say our girls go out 5-6 times a day. We've got a Beagle-y girl and the squirrels just tease her something fierce! She's a loon.

She's ALSO the "Kissy McLickerson" of the two. She licks the air, even. I don't know if it's the Beagle part of her or whatever she's mixed with, but she LOVES to lick. My personal opinion is that it's a type of grooming. People are a part of their "pack" and I think dogs do groom.

I could be wrong, since the other dog doesn't do that. She's part border collie and we THINK part boston terrier/bulldog. Maybe she's just too smart and realizes we take showers, whereas the beagle is as dumb as a doorknob. (and CHOCK FULL of personality! I guess we sacrifice smarts for entertainment. )

Mine goes out about 3 to 4 times typically. We have a fenced in yard so some days he likes to lay in the sun. Daddy takes him for a walk after dinner and he loves that. And there are days he will run want to run in and out 10 times in an hour. That is usually when he hears/sees a cat, squirrel or something.
As far as the licking goes. I CAN NOT stand a dog licking me. He did this when we first got him and after grabbing his tongue for a couple seconds a few times he stopped. Now he will ocassionally give me a quick lick but he knows that he better stop or I will grab his tongue again. He does give kisses to others but not excessively.

My dog goes out probably 3 to 5 times a day on a normal day. If I'm going somewhere i will leave him out before I leave. It doesn't matter how long I'm gone, when I get home he wants out again.
But he NEVER wants to stay out longer than it takes him to do his duty. Not even on a really nice day.
He is a Beagle mix. Not sure what he's mixed with but I think it might be Shepard. He's a little bigger that the avg. Beagle but not nearly as big as a Shepard.

As far as the licking (kissing). He rarely does that. He might lick me once or twice on the leg as he passes by me, but not often.
Some dogs just seem to have the licking tendencies
It doesn't seem to matter as to which breeds. I've seen lots of different breeds do it.
I may be loony but I wish my dog WAS a foot licker.

Both of our dogs go out three times a day. In the morning before school and after school my oldest has to put them out then before bed hubby puts them out.

I do NOT let them lick me. The one likes to eat "stuff" when he's out going potty.

We have two dogs, one is 7 (Blue Heeler/Australian Shepard mix) and the other is a 7 month old Border Collie. Of course the puppy has to be taken out every couple of hours but the 7 yr. old only goes out 3-4 times a day also. She isn't very big, only 47 lbs.

As for the licking, I talked to the Vet about this because the 7 yr. old is always licking, it's not just a kiss but if you are sitting she will just sit there and lick your legs, feet or whatever else she can get her nasty tongue on! The vet told me that dogs love lotion and LOVE the salt that humans have on their skin.

I remember watching the "Dog Whisperer" one time when he said that dogs with higher anxiety levels tend to be habitual lickers. They do it to soothe themselves, get caught up in it and keep on and on. He told the owners that is was not a sign of affection and to not let the dog do it. I remember it because we have a rather high-strung Dachshund (I'm being nice here) who will lick you to death if you let her. I've also seen what she digs up out of my f lower beds, umm.... cat treasure if you know what I mean? No thank you to the "kisses" at our house, lol.

My Corgi must have a small bladder. He goes every time someone goes out and will take him...and he gets up once or twice during the night to go. DH and I don't mind, and kind of take turns taking him out. Also, he's a licker.

Our Bernese Mountain dog only goes when you make her go out, usually 3 time a day...early morning, late afternoon, and just before bed.

I think it just depends...just like people....I'm just like the Corgi, so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me!

Ours go out 5 times a day. Before school, noon, after school, around 7 and again at 11.

We have 1 that licks herself constantly. She forgets to stop even. I swear she has OCD or something.

3 Labs here. One is 9, and he is getting old, Seamus. and he is chocolate. Declan is 8, a yellow lab, skittish, and Roan is 7 and is black. Roan is a beautiful lab, but is very ver,y hyper, but is the one, who, since I have gotten sick and unsteady on my feet, follows me from room to room, and lays by my feet. DH says he is watching out for me so I don't fall, and little does he know, that half the time I am tripping over him LOL. Anyway, Declan and Roan will go out constantly. First thing in the am, they charge for the door. I also let them out before I am leaving, or right after being in their crate when I go out. And once at night. Usually about 5-6 times a day.

Seamus, is very stubborn, and while they are charging out the door first thing at 5am, Seamus mosey's to the kitchen and proceeds to park himself on the floor. He only really goes out when he HAS to go, and sometimes it's only 3 times a day. Usually right after the other two get in LOL. He just sits and stares at you, like your supposed to know..Ok, mom, I'm ready now. He is truly the leader of the pack, and is the same way when eating. Only eats when he is good and ready, and will bark, to let everyone know he is eating now, and waits until one or both of the other two have to go lay on the floor and watch him eat LOL. Did I say he was stubborn LOL.

That might mean something. Our beagle - the crazy licker - is much more "sensitive" then the border collie mix. She has to know what we're doing at all times. If we have to yell at her for something (very rare now, she's almost 3 and a good dog), we have to spend a few minutes "making up" with her afterwards or she sulks.

Did that Dog Whisperer say why not to let those types of dogs do it?

Oh and Roan is a LICKER...and I heard it was the salt thing too, but I don't know...I would also think OCD or something. He will also walk in circles so I think he tends to be nervous. When there are firecrackers or something he practically tries to crawl under the couch. One day he actually crawled up on DD lap, we started laughing as he is like 85 lbs or so. LOL

Cinnamon is a big scaredy cat....she is afraid of boxes, backpacks, kitchen chairs, cookie sheets, and man you should see her when I get out the Ironing Board......maybe there is something with the soothing.

I would have never thought of that since she does it while relaxing too.....

Thanks!

DH says that I let our 2 Beagles out way too often.

Lou, our oldest, normally only goes out to do his potty stuff and then wants right back in.

Miss Daisy, the youngest (there is 6 months separating them in age - Lou is the oldest at 4 years old) would love to be outside all the time. We don't let her though, because she tends to bark at anything that moves and eat the lawn grubs (and there is nothing grosser than picking up dog poo loaded with dead grubs). I would love to spray for the grubs to kill them, but it is raining and raining and raining right now and I can't do it in the rain.

Lou is not a licker. He is a calm, mellow dog. He will groom Miss Daisy though.

Miss Daisy is a licker. She will lick and lick and lick you. It gets really annoying. She is the most giant love in the universe though, so we deal with it.

Generally licking is a sign of dominance or 'ownership', the dog thinks you are 'his'. It can also be anxiety.

I definitely have a "licker". I can stop him if I really tell him "firmly" to stop. But, I always thought he was licking because he loved me so much. Maybe NOT!

As far as going out ... he goes out in the morning before we go to work (he might go twice depending on the weather). He goes out when we get home (sometimes) or a few hours after we get home. And I always let him out before we go to bed.

Weekends are another story. If it is nice and we are outside, he'll be out all day. But if we're in the house, NO WAY, he'll be right in the house next to us.
