Question Apples????

I know this sounds a little weird. But for some reason, I have suddenly found an appetite for apples. I have never really gotten "into" the variety/names of them. But over the last couple of weeks, I have taking more notice. I found a few that I reeeaallly liked and have found some that I didn't. So, I was wondering what do you prefer? I am talking about for just slicing and eating, not frying or cooking.

Here's one that I really like, but can't seem to find it anymore, so I am assuming it is out of season: It was a yellowish/greenish and red. It was called The Pink Lady.

I also like Gala.
I don't like the fiji. And really don't care for the washington state apples which seems to be the most popular around here.

So, what's your favorite eatting apple?

Thanks for your input!

red and golden delicious, fuji, gala are all I buy... some others have been "mealy" (could have been just bad apples) and I don't like that.

Also really love asian pears which I think are part apple, or at least apple-like... usually something I get for Christmas and I rarely buy them myself. Now that I think about it, I'm going to buy them more often..

Hmmm, that sounds pretty interesting too. Might have to look into those tomorrow too.

Also, I don't like the "mushiness" of some of the apples I have tried. So, if any of you can recommend a good 'crisp' apple, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the replies thus far!

Honeycrsip apples are absolutely wonderful. They are the best with a bit of caramel to dip them in.

I think they come into season in November.

They are pretty tasty, aren't they?

My kids weren't too fond of the grapples I bought last year. I figured they'd love them, but they weren't a hit.

The Asian Pears are good, but expensive... they are 99c each up here.

I don't like the mushiness of the red delicious apples...but like the Gala and pink ladies.

I hate mushy, mealy apples - my favorite is a crisp, crunchy Red Delicious. I also like the Gala occassionally. My kids love the grapples...but they're $3.99 for 4 - I will only buy them occassionally.

I sliced into a Gala apple apple for my son and it was kind of mushy, so I ended up cutting him a Red Delicious instead.

I mostly buy Golden Delicious apples. I am wierd about my fruit/veggies and don't like to buy the darker skinned apples because I can't tell if they have bruising as easily as I can with a Golden Delicious.

For apple pie, IMO, the best ones are made from Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples, using a 50/50 ratio (normally 4 of each type apple).

FYI - Apples with round bottoms are tart, the ones with knobby bottoms are sweet. I learned that in Home-ec many, many moons ago.

Sweet Sixteens are my all-time favorites.....but you can't find them in stores very often so I go with Galas and Fiji for store favorites, but sometimes I get a craving for granny smith. I never really got into the different kinds until we lived in South Dakota and there was an apple orchard less then 10 miles away from the house. We would drive up there an pick our own apples during the fall, thats when I started appreciating the different tastes, color, grit , acid level and sugar contain
