Are you getting scared to buy anything "Made in China"?

This morning I turned on the news and even more chinese made items were being recalled including Boy Scout badges and infant blocks due to lead. It is getting to a point, that you can not trust anything "Made In China"! Are you scared to buy anything Made in China?

I remember years ago, Wal Mart had an ad campaign about how they had "Made in the USA" items. Now I am sure most non-food items in Wal Mart are Made in China or elsewhere.

Lead side effects can be very scary. Here are a couple of articles about the effect of lead to children, and adults.

Lead poisoning - CNN.com

Health Effects on Children - NSC

ETA: Maybe now with these companies losing billions of dollars due to recalls and consumers not wanting to buy their products made overseas, that this will stand as a wake up call to bring the manufacturing jobs back to the USA so they can have control over what is going into their products.

my mother just brought me over 3 containers of some kind of apple crisp snacks. i looked on the back and it said "product of china". all 3 containers went straight in the trash, i didn't even bother opening them.

i'm more afraid of buying food products from china than other goods. i packed all my sons thomas trains away months ago - we thought he could have them for his children. now i'm thinking that's not such a great idea!

Yes. I picked up a squeeky toy for my dog yesterday and it occurred to me after I bought it that since it was made in China quite possibly the paint used contained lead. Needless to say, the toy is going back to the store.

Amazing about the apple crisp snacks -- I never would have thought to look at where such a product came from but will from now on!

Personally, no, but that's because we're all past the mouthing/teething stage. I don't think that I buy many (any?) food products made in China, but I guess I better be more careful checkign about that.

I haven't bought any toys for a while because of all the recalls, can't say it ever dawned on me to check food items.....Need to start doing that.

I look at everything, and if it says "Made in China" on it, I won't buy it. Especially Food items - blech, even the thought of it makes my stomach hurt!! I will definitely be checking out toy purchases this Holiday Season!

I am watching now too.

I wondered this when I saw the latest list of stuff being recalled... would consumers really start watching that the items they purchase are MADE IN AMERICA or not.

I think that's a good thing--keep our jobs here.

According to this news article 80% of all toys sold in the USA are made in China

ABC News: When it comes to toys, buying American is tough

The following list is "just some" of the toys that are made in China (from the link above). NO Recalls..but if you are serious about not buying "made in china" products.
Tickle Me Elmo (the new version with Elmo as a pizza delivery man).
Webkinz plush toys, which have their own online world.
Transformer Voice Changer helmet
Radio Flyer tricycles and metal red wagons
Hasbro's Tonka trucks

fortunately my "babies" are 16, 16, 19 and 20... so no "toys" as in toys...

for us it's the jewelry, makeup, food, and clothing...

Even my 7 yo granddaughter notices everything that is marled "made in China". THen she questions "why everything is made in China". I think she's a much better hawk eye for that stuff than I am. But I'm definitely going to start paying better attention.

I would never have thought to look at baked goods such as that Apple Crisp. But I don't buy such things anyway. Homemade is MUCH better.

I'm not scared, but I won't buy it. The reason the stuff is manufactured there is because China doesn't have anti-sweatshop laws. I won't buy stuff because I don't want products made using slave labor.

If people were willing to pay a little more, and CEOs were willing to be paid a lot less than their overinflated salaries, we could bring manufacturing back to the US.

I did something yesterday that I have not done in almost 3 years.

I went to Walmart! I don't like Walmart, they treat their employees like CRAP and they are non-union!

But I broke my own rule and went anyway. Ended up buying a can of pringles at what I thought was a good deal $1.00....only to find that at Meijers they are 88 cents this week! grrr.

But I noticed, almost every single product was made overseas and/or in China!!

Sad...just freakin sad!!!

Trying not to be too sensitive here, because I am Chinese (born here).

Please keep in mind that almost all companies buy from China, even if the product says made in America, most likely some of the parts used to make that item are from China or other foreign places. Haier appliances, most stuffed animals, kid novelty jewelry, DVD's, dollar store items, Nike shoes, parts of the monitor you are looking at, etc. The toner cartridge I just put in my printer was "made in Japan with components assembled in Malaysia". Unintentially, my tile for my tile floors were made in China, as was the wood floor I have.

While I do believe China was partly to blame for this disaster, I also believe that the American companies are ultimately to blame. Why? Because before any item goes out to the consumer, it should be tested. Just as with imported foriegn made cars, they are held to American laws to be street legal... crash tests, and such. If you've ever been to a foreign country, I'm sure you've seen cars you've never seen or heard of before... that's because demands and standards are different for every country. Some things that are on the market there would never make it to market here.

Remember the mad cow outbreak and meat paranoia of a few years back? I was told by my friend (who is an US Agricultural Inspector) to avoid beef products that come out of Japan, because back then (and maybe still currently) Japan did not screen for Mad Cow. Those items were still all over Japan, but were actively pulled from the shelves of US stores. Same thing with foreign made medications...

I just happen to believe that the toy makers (ie: Mattel, Hasbro, etc) have the ultimate responsibility in this mess.

And keep in mind that the demand for items from foriegn countries comes from a demand for lower prices. Because labor laws are cheaper elsewhere, they can offer the items at a lower price.

I'm not pro-foreign outsourcing, by any means, but I do realize my contribution to the demand.

Yes, I am afraid to buy from China now.

What I don't understand is why and how companies like Mattel, Thomas the Train, etc. can keep using Chinese companies and then NOT TESTING the products themselves for things like lead paint. What kind of quality checks do our American companies have in place???? If you are putting out a product that is designed for children to use, would you not double check the products before they hit the store shelves????

Can you pick up lead on your hands from handling the products or do you actually have to put the product in your mouth? Does lead dust just get in the air? Remember the mini blind scare from a few years back.
