What vitamins, herbs or minerals do ya'll take?

Just wondering what everyone takes.....

I have been horrible over the years about taking care of myself.....I have my multi-vitamins, but to be honest they just pretty much sit in my cupboard.....

anything good for colds? Felt one coming for the last week, and woke up with it full fledged.

I read somewhere that if you eat garlic (not completely overcooked), it will nip a cold in the bud. You may not have the best breath, but may feel better!

I had a gastric bypass, so I take more now than I used too. But every day I take:
2 mulit. 2 calicum, 2 sublingual B12, 2 Biotin (for my hair to grow back) and I chew 2 chewable vit. C's, and about twice a week I take an iron pill.

I chew vit. C every few hours if one of my family menbers is sick or if I start to feel sick.

When I was actively working out, my trainer put me on Glutamine for muscle recovery (powder form) and when I had a cold coming on, he added Vit. C w/rose hips and Fish oil to the mix. My colds never lasted more than 2-3 days. Occassionally, I use airborne as well. I also keep Kids Orange Juice in the fridge... with the added vitamins.

Melatonin - a naturally occuring hormone in the body. Helps regulate sleep.

I take 2 - 3mg tabs about a half hour before bed. Just makes you sleepy, not groggy. And you wake up without that dragged-out feeling.

DH takes that when he travels out of the country to help with the jet lag.

I take a Centrum, 2 fish oils & a baby aspirin every morning. With dinner a Calcium 500 +D, and at bedtime a statin.

We have a family history of heart disease and my cholesterol is a little high. I couldnt' get it all the way down with diet and so the doctor wanted to be preventative in lieu of my parents heart issues.

i second the garlic not only for colds, but for protection against the flu as well.
i take med. size clove of galrlic, chopped, swallow with warm water, and a heaping teaspoon of ground falxseed every morning. i started with the garlic more than a year ago, never got the flu last year.
i used to be very careful to not get flu in the past years, washing my hands often, staying away from people with flu, but still i got it every year, last year i still washed my hands plenty, but i had to interact with few people with flu and did not get sick so garlic must be good for something.

also eating a stalk of celery kills the garlic breath.

also take multivitamine, Ca, Co Q10, B complex.

I will have to try that-when it's bedtime, my brain just seems to want to spin. After our son was diagnosed w/ cancer, I did try taking Ambien , and I would fall asleep right away, but would wake up exactly four hours after taking it and not sleep for the rest of the night. Even now that he's in remission, I still can't sleep well, unless I have a glass or two of wine. Not healthy, I know. I did try taking Benadryl, but I just felt like crap the next day. I start a new job on Monday-my first job in 5yrs. I will definitely need my beauty sleep. I will be checking this out tomorrow. Thanks!

What is sublingual b-12? I know B-12 is important for nerve health. My dh takes a B-12 shot once a month for his neuological problems. He took it more often right after he had viral encephelitis.

It's funny...

I take almost exactly what lisacb takes except I take the Kirkland/Costco multivitamin instead of Centrum. It contains 100% of daily Vitamin D so my Calcium has only the Calcium and I take it at bedtime with the statin (Lipitor).

I have the chewable Calcium's that are chocolate flavored... I'm dieting right now so I look forward to that thing ALL day! LOL.

When I FIRST feel a cold coming on, I take Airborne. Haven't had a cold/flu in over a year (knock on wood).

PS lisacb... how many milligrams are those Fish Oil pills? Mine are enormous @ 1200 mg (I take one of these a day)!!! My name is 'Lisa' too!

I take a women's multivitamin, a B complex, and calcium daily. I take them as a vitamin-cocktail with my "happy pill" every morning. I always feel nauseous afterwards, but it passes....

That is funny! My fish oils are 1000 mg. I bought the 1200 once and they are just enough bigger that I could really tell a difference.

I had quit taking the D with the calcium, but then read an article about the increasing Vitamin D deficiency in the US and then my MIL was diagnosed with it. With the skin cancer scare, everyone wears so much suncreen that they're not absobing enough D from the sun. So, I started back the the extra D in the calcium.

I haven't seen the chewable chocolate ones....hmmm, I'll have to check that out. I've only seen the chewable orange and I was sick of those by the time the bottle was gone.

My statin is the generic of Mevacor - Lovastatin.

Multi-vitamin, fish oil, and calcium w/magnesium.
I also eat oats for breakfast every morning w/ ground flaxseed and cinnamon mixed in and at some point during the day I fix a lg. cup or glass of green tea. Hot or cold.
I have an auntie that is well into her 80's that is very active and alert and she takes aloe juice everyday and I can't remember what for. But she swears by it.

This is amazing, I had no idea subligual meds worked like that. I guess that's why you see people that take nitro glycerine put it under their tongues. Very Cool.

Ooooh, aloe juice is nasty tasting. Do you take it in a form that is palatable?

I take fish oil in the summer, and cod liver oil in the winter (for vitamin D) and calcium. Also, metamucil

Be careful about taking some supplements esp. if you take other meds. Talk with your doctor before adding vitatins and supplements. I can't take baby asprin. My dh had to take B-12 shots more often than other people because of his problems.

Cinnamon really helps with high BGL's. I use it on cereal, in my coffee and even on my green beans.

I've not started taking the capsules yet, because I've not asked my doc/pharmacist about it, and I want to make sure it's not going to interact with my regular meds. Anyone here diabetic and taking cinnamon and metformin?

Benefits of flax seed as shown in many studies include lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) levels. Other benefits show that flax seed may also help lower blood triglyceride and blood pressure. It may also keep platelets from becoming sticky therefore reducing the risk of a heart attack.
I have a friend who's teen daughter swears by this stuff. She eats the flaxseed, and it's supposedly kind of nutty.
I just take the gummy flintstones... They are yummy, but I don't let my kids take them, or they will think they are candy and eat the whole jar.

I have been tajking for about a year (thanks Samantha, SC) 5-HTP and it's awesome!

5-HTP:

Promotes Balance Serotonin Levels

Helps Enhance Mood

Helps Control Appetite

and it works, I will be 37 in Dec and alot of the women that use it are older than me, it helps with hot flashes, night sweats and other menapause type things. I took it for "mood" and it has really helped me.
I also have dropped a few poounds which I really did not need to, but it was an added bonus
