Help needed with an algebra problem

Okay, I have gone around and around with this problem for my son. I can get the answer but I don't know how to put it into an equation. Someone here must know how to do it.

A fundraiser sells 480 rolls of wrapping paper, for a total sales of $2340, solid paper sells for $4 a roll, printed for $6. How many solid and how many printed rolls did they sell?

Thanks for the help this is driving me crazy!(and my son, but mostly me!)

x +y=480
4x + 6y = 2340

Okay I get that, but how do you solve it?

okay.....so we know that x+y=480 and 4x+6y=2340. You just substitute it.
x=480-y and put that in for the other equation. 4(480-y)+6y=2340 then mult that out to get 6y+1920-4y=2340. 6y-4y=2y. So then 2y+1920=2340. 2y=420. y=210. Plug that in for x and x = 270. Does that help any or did I just confuse you more?

LOL, guess we were working on it at the same time. I'm probably wrong, since it has been a long time.

Thanks so much, I got the right answer just didn't know how I got it. I can do it in my head just not write it down to explain it to my son.

You all rock, I wish I had asked before racking my brain for the last 2 days!

Just curious what grade level this is for. I have DDs in 4th and 5th grade and it amazes me how much algebra they are already doing. Of course not more complicated problems like this one, but still algebra problems. Anyway, I was just wondering what grade level this is for - or is it for regular high school algebra class?

Algebra 1 High school, but it was I think still in the review section from Jr. High math. My boys had some very basic algebra in 3-4grade.... things like 4+x=9, or 5-x=2 I think that it is all to get them started. My problem is that I am great at math logic and can find the correct answer to most problems, but I don't think the same way that the book needs me to think, so explaining it is a real pain.

Omg, I had the strictest algebra teacher in school. She would count points against us if we did not show our work on our assignments. I guess in the long run I'm glad she did, but it still was difficult to get used to.

out of curiosity...

how come you came to a message board with this question? Why didn't your son go to his teacher for further explanation?

I understand you wanting to "help" him, but wouldn't it be a better learning experience to go to the teacher first??

Maybe because the teacher isn't availabe at 9pm on a Sunday night.

Good heavens, it's well within the role and expectations of a parent to provide supplemental instruction to their child during homework time. Kudos to a parent who wants to find the proper method to solve the problem, rather than giving the answer.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Grrr....

Some people actually have a zoom lense for just these types of threads - just when everyone is banding together to help someone work through a problem that helps a mom at home with her kid, there's someone who wants to be critical.

Bear in mind - op didn't ask for/want the ANSWER - she wanted some help in trying to EXPLAIN it...something called "trying to help a son/daughter through their homework together"

I can't think of a better use for our boards!!! And we've got some bright parents here. WTG, OP!
