What good deeds have you done lately?

Have you done anything nice for someone else? Have you given of your time to a special cause? Please brag here. Too often we do something special and never tell anyone about it. Well here is the place to say Hey I did this and I am so proud.....

I have put in a lot of hours of volunteer time at our local therapeutic horseback riding school. I am schooling/training (4) of our 15 horses and I help with (3) 1-hour lessons each week.

One of my therapeutic rider is a 32yo man with paralysis from a drunk driver car accident, one is a 12yo boy that was shaken baby -- this is the saddest... he's basically a 100 pound infant , and the other is a 40yo man with mental retardation; sweet Kenny.

I also do grunt work... ie cleaning the grounds, mucking stalls, feeding and keeping the water tubs full and clean.

I call it 'going to the gym'! It is so healing for me and I LOVE being outdoors.

It makes me feel good to help out.

I help out my son and his room mate (roomie lost his job and has only a part time job), recently found out my brother (mentally ill) has no money and only some foodstamps coming in so I gave him food and non foodstamp items plus some cash, stockpiled some stuff for my employers food drive next month and bought things for my monthly church food drive. ALso my stepmom and I are filling 2 boxes for Samaritian purse to go over seas.

Nothing much just making my part of the world a little brighter.

Since it has been so unusually HOT here in southern Indiana for the better part of the summer, I have been taking water to our volunteer firemen when they go to a fire. My husband is a fireman and we have an extra pager at home so I usually know when they get a call. Plus, having no kids, I'm usually available at a moment's notice (unless I'm at work). There is a plus - hot sweaty firemen looking REAL GOOD!

We were in Logan Airport last weekend, when an elderly couple fell down the escalator. Everyone started screaming including the wife but my husband ran over and pushed the off button. We stayed with the couple until the paramedics arrived. (He got an atta boy for that one).

Well since this is a shopping board.....
Within the last month I had a missonary nun at my house "shopping" in my garage. She took 3 full Old Navy bags of stuff to take back to eastern Europe with her! I sent some Old Navy leggings I got reallly cheap last year to a cloistered convent in Ohio for a nuns final profession gift. They wear them to sleep in and it makes me giggle to think of nuns wearing Old Navy leggings!!! lol These I gave away. I bought a bunch of 47 cent flip flops for a friends church project (she will pay me back) for Mexico. And today I am taking a whole display box of rolled wrapping paper and some of that fun 25 cent Target stuff to a lady who is doing that Christmas shoe box project (she will buy what she wants) with her church friends! I also delivered bags of infant apparel to Birthright and stuff for baskets for Rachels Vineyard retreat gifts and about 350 Target 25 cent items for the Art Center in Muscatine where my best friend works. (I will also be reimbursed for all this.) I can't afford to give all this stuff away but I can sure shop for it!!!!! lol

You guys are so inspiring to me!

I am getting my Target 90% off Christmas supplies ready for donating to the many groups who will want them. I am so proud of my stockpile - I admire all of my things, enjoy bragging about them, but I can't possibly keep everythingl

I did a collection drive in my town three weeks ago for old blankets, sheets and towels (esp old beach towels - I thought it would be easier for people to part with their older, shabbier beach blankets at the end of the summer, than to put them away untl next year) - they all went to the Humane Society, who are always in need of these items.

I am filling up a box of small household items for a friend who is moving out of a bad live-in relationship and needs a lot of help and support.
We also donate time and money to our local Crusade for Children charity.
We also donate to Toys for Tots and other charities at Christmas time.
My DH was a volunteer fireman for many years.

It's unbecoming to brag about your good deeds.

They are "good deeds" not trophies to brag about...they aren't something you wear on your sleeve, or only done so you can receive some sort of recognition for doing them.

My family and I gave away many clothes this week, most new some used to my Best Friends sister who has no money and after years of home schooling decided to send her kids to public school.....well after buying new clothes for them, and prewashing them, her dryer caught fire and they lost them. I was very proud of my kids, because they threw some new clothes that they really loved or begged for and hadn't even worn.

Also waited with an eldery woman who's car broke down. She was afraid to leave her car till her son got there and you could tell she was also afraid of waiting alone, so we waited with her.

Make sure that what you are doing (good deeds) is within the law of where you live.

Saw this news article yesterday and could not believe that there are laws like this one.
Group Intentionally Violating City Ordinance During "Ladle Fest" - News Story - WFTV Orlando

" ORLANDO, Fla. -- A controversial city ordinance has led to a number of protests and now a trial. An Orlando man is the first person to face a jury for feeding the homeless. A man is facing a judge and jury for violating Orlando's ban on feeding the homeless. Eric Montanez, 22, was caught feeding a group in Lake Eola Park earlier this year."

Wow.....That's pretty outrageous, think they would have better things to focus their time and money on!

Personally, I find it very refreshing to know there are still good people out there. That couple that fell on the escalator could have easily been my parents and I'm proud of the poster that stopped to help. Some of the things listed were gestures I haven't bothered to think about in months & it serves as a nice reminder of things I should be doing.

Let's look for the good and remind ourselves how blessed we are to be able to help and what else we can do.

Vent finished. Flame me if ya want to; there's a fire extinguisher in the hall.

I think this thread is a good reminder that we SHOULD do things to assist the ones in need. I dont see this as a " bragging" thread. just people talking about that they do in every day life to assist someone who needs a little help.

Since my kids were little we had always bought a bag of cat food or dog food (instead of treats) when getting groceries for the local humane society. They are all grown and buy their own now, so instead of 1 bag of food for the cats and dogs it has grown to 4 because they all continued the practice. Since I needed an activity to get my fat butt off the sofa, I started to volunteer there as well. Now I walk and play with the critters 1 time per week. It's not much but I get back so much more than I give

I don't think anyone here is bragging. It's FUN to hear about what people do to help others. I don't think anyone here expects any recognition either. The topic was brought up so people, like myself, chimed in. And alot of it has to do with our shopping bargains!!! I wouldn't be so judgmental if I were you!!

when we were in Boston, we bought 7 day subway/train passes, but we only used them for four days. Upon leaving Boston, we figured we would just give the passes out to the local college kids to use (three free days, right???) When trying to give them away, everyone looked at us like we had the plague. Finally, we saw a family w/ a bunch of boys (just like us) at the arrival gate. I went up to them and said, "please take these subway tickets. They are free. We are leaving. If you can't use them, pls pass them on to someone else. " I just shoved them into her hand. When I looked back, she was showing them to her husband, and you could tell he was thrilled to have them. I guess the only other nice thing I have done is that our neighbor is here, while his wife and daughter are in another state-job and real estate issues. They are such a nice family. I made an extra big batch of beef stew and choc. chip cookies, and met him in the driveway one day after work w/ the goodies. You could tell he was just touched to have someone meet him at the end of the day. I guess that's about it-not that I'm mean-I do try to be a kind person-perhaps I should try more.

One thing I used to do all of the time was pay for the car behind me at the toll booth, I saw it on Oprah or something. It was a lot of fun, but now we have easy pass so I don't do it.

I tried to help an old guy find his car at Walmart the other day, never did find it though?

I gave some extra $10 Shoprite coupons out when i was shopping over the weekend.

I don't feel like I do as much as I should lately, I need some inspiration!

Ahh....maybe folks were looking at you funny because you were calling them subway passes instead of the "T"....??? Boston has a lingo all its own...LOL

Some lady let me in front her yesterday at Big Lots when we were checking out, so I went out to my car and brought her one of my extra 20% off coupons in - she had a cartful of food/snacks.

Then last night our friends' daughter called (she's 13) and asked if I could take her to school today - she had Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting at 7:20 a.m. and her parents both have to be at work before 6:30 a.m. I go right by their house on my way to work and also right by her school. So I took her to school this morning. She is just TOO CUTE!

I usually use the free pet food coupons (for food my pets don't eat) and take that free pet food to the local humane society also. They also recycle cell phones and ink cartridges there so I always have a bag started for them.

And I agree with the previous poster(s), it is nice to know some people do still do good deeds.

For those looking for inspiration here are some things that could be done.

Taking food/groceries/garden produce to a local church that gives out food every Saturday to anyone that asks for it. They have about 300 people every week.

Pack shoeboxes for the Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan's purse)

"Adopt" a couple from another country who are here going to school. Provide advice, comfort, money, food.

Provide school supplies for the villages in Alaska that the people live by subsistence. (Love Target clearances.)

Provide treats/school supplies/toys for children in a mountain village in Jamaica. Many schools in other countries require that parents pay and many many cannot afford it.

Be an "encourager". Find something that people do and give them kudos for good work, whatever it may be.

This week (like every other week ), I am sending out care packages to soldiers and Marines deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. This week I'm sending 8 packages including one full of a large mix of mens and womens underwear and socks to a group that is only getting a shower every three days and has not so good laundry turnaround. That request really grabbed me....clean underwear is a life essential in my book!

I also brought a long-outgrown Batman costume to work and left it on the free-for-all table and it was gone in 5 minutes....some happy little boy somewhere....

I think it is so awesome that you do this......when my DH was gone last time, he went through so many socks and undies......My kids send a care package every two weeks to some single soldiers that we know who are deployed and don't have any family. They love picking out things for "their" soldier. Each child has their own soldier......

It is nice to read about peoples' generosity and thoughtfulness. I used to always enjoy watching Charles Kuralt on Sunday Mornings -- CBS. He'd accentuate the good news of the world for a full two hours each week... Healthy for the viewer's soul just as giving of ones self without any expectations of anything in return is healthy for the doer's soul.
