What holidays do your kids go to school that shock you?

The previous post about Fall Break had me thinking about the holidays my kids go to school that I am shocked they don't have off.
When I was going to school, we were off all the Federal holidays. We learned about the holidays before the actual day.
Now my kids get off for virtually no holidays. They are in school for Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, President's Day (when I was a kid, you had off for Lincoln's and Washington's Birthdays). I am sure I might be missing some.
What holidays do your kids go to school?

My DD goes to school on Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Martin Luther King Day. they do have a Fall Break. When I was growing up we had all those holidays off and no fall break.

This year, my son who attends public school, will go to school on Good Friday.
A few years ago, a woman of the Jewish faith joined the school board and with the backing of a few community leaders who were also Jewish lobbied to have Yom Kippur and Rosh Hoshanah (sp?) added as school holidays. Bear in mind, we do not have a significant Jewish population in our town. I personally didn't like that they were just getting back to school and then were having days off so soon.

It was that way for a few years until the complaints overwhelmed and it became difficult to fit it in....so the pendulum swung the other way, if we can't have it all religious holidays...we now have none. I'm waiting for Christmas to go.

On the flip side, we get buck and doe hunting days off as *holidays*. No federal holidays here.

PS I live in the sticks! LOL

There are more school attendance days required of students than when I was going to school way back when. If the students were off for every federal holiday, the school year would be about 5 days longer. There's really no need for students to be out of school on a federal holiday.

I would like to see kids observe the holiday that is being "celebrated". Here we did not have off on Columbus Day, but, we do have off on Martin Luther King day.

Since there are higher standards and 180 days that our children need to go to school in our state, it is impossible to give off "holidays" and then have the children get off a proper summer vacation.

I live in Maryland near DC. Since many parents work for the government, we get off the Federal holidays. That way parents don't have to find a babysitter. There is also a set number of days students have to be in school that is part of being certified as a school. Where I work they also count the hours not just the days.

I am really not shocked at any of the kids' holidays, however, where DH works, there are a ton of ex-military ppl and they don't get off for Veteran's Day. But they did just enjoy their Columbus Day holiday-makes no sense to me!

I'm in upstate NY

We just had off for Columbus day.. have off Veterans day, and a week for break during the president's day holidays, and another week in April. We also have 2 "superintendants days" and 2 "conference days" although no teachers actually make their conferences on these days. We go to school from after Labor Day to the end of June.

My kids have MLK day off (but then again, we live in a suburb of Atlanta) and election day (mostly because they have voting precints at the schools and they can not secure the schools with people going in & out all day). This year my oldest DS will go to (public) school on Good Friday, because our spring break isn't right at Easter this year. My youngest DS goes to a Christian school, so he will have Good Friday off.

I would rather have off a week at a time or more time off in the summer rather than a random day or two here and there.

Veteran's Day is not a holiday for my kids either, yet we have a large military population. (We live near Fort Riley in Kansas) Very strange to me!!
