it was determined that the child had sickle cell... and this information wasn't brought to the attention of the bootcamp, so how in the world would they have been responsible for the death of this child if they didn't know?? It would be different if the disease had been documented, then preventative measures would have been in place to better accommodate him. Why would the nurse have called 911 sooner, if the child was coherent to begin with? Aside from that, you have kids in there for a reason, and most of them refuse to listen to authority, who was to say that when he fell down and complained of rubbery legs, that he wasn't just trying to get out of doing what he was told to do? I wouldn't say Nurses like her give others a bad name, because I can think of a few other incidences of Nurses who REALLY give the occupation a bad name (like the one in Ohio that killed a crap load of elderly patients they were in charge of)

But if you read all the reports, the guards put ammonia inhalants in his nose and HELD HIS MOUTH CLOSED so that he would breathe them in. I am a nurse and if there was a person who was acting the way he was in that tape, then you call 911. Why take a chance? If the kid is faking it then the hospital will decide that. Working in the ER for many years taught me one thing, be safe, not sorry. There were plenty of people brought in who were fakers and most of them were from jail however there were times when the jailers thought that the patient was faking and they really werent. I am sorry but after seehing this go on for longer then about 5 minutes, intuition would tell you that there was something a little deeper going on here... and if you were wrong, well the kid would be sent back after being evaluated in the ER. When the cops/guards were pounding this kid with fists in the arms and the kids barely moved, that should have told you something... And I do not believe that his sickle cell was listed as the final cause of death. It was determined that he suffered an anoxic brain injury due to ammonia inhalation. I will be anxious to see if the Florida Board of Nursing pursues charges against her. I can honeslty say that if I was on the Board, I would have a hard time saying that she acted with the childs best interests in mind. |
