what would you change if you were a mod here

As a mod we get so many complaints about the way we do things I would like to know what you would change if you were the mod here!
what would you allow and what would you delete? keep in mind there are board rules in place and even though we are just volunteers we have to answer to higher ups!
also how would you handle lack of appreciation, with people calling you names, harassing emails and even stalking you at your home! believe me these have all happened while I have been a mod here, not all to me personally but some!

you tell me how you would handle it! I would like to know for my own self!

I'd block certain users and their ISP's. I really don't know if that is feasible on boards with as many members as we have but wow, I get tired of all of the backstabbing -- it is just so unnecessary. I feel so sorry for the mods sometimes.

How can you block ISP's?

What if they're coming in from AOL or Comcast or Roadrunner? If you block those, what about every other member that uses them?

If you meant IP"s, instead of ISP's...IP's can be changed in the blink of an eye.

Some people might say that if (s)he were the mod, (s)he would stop omiting different threads that might be offensive. They don't like the "censorship"...

I, for one, feel that the mods' discretionary thread removals are minimal. And what they DO remove has contributed to the more positive climate of this particular board.

Eventually, the gripers either deal with it or leave.

So if I were the mod, I'd keep it this way -- it's exactly the way it should be. Any less "censorship" would lead to a more negative atmosphere. There are plenty of those types of boards, already.

Well, Squeak, all I have to add is that it is unfortunate, that as a volunteer, you have been subjected to this type of abuse and harrassment. Unfortunately, the old saying "No good deed goes unpunished" has been proven to be true too many times.......

Sorry I don't have anything positive to add, just wanted to let you know we do appreciate the mods

I dont know how you could do it but the ones who are KNOWN troublemakers would be blocked. and if they signed up as someone else, sooner or later you would figure them out and band them again.

I'd allow people to post as many pictures of George Clooney as they want, no matter the size.

Ha, I like it!

Seriously, though, I would consider blocking some foreign ISPs, due to spam, rather than anything else. Most of the deals posted here are American, and most of the users aren't in countries that are posting spam. I mean like the 'WOw a color TV for free is always welcome!' type posts. IP's are blocked either in hosting settings, or in some board software, depending on setup.

Having been a moderator here, I know for a fact that it is unappreciative, and the emails are bombarding--but you can't expect NOT to have that with over 400,000 members and a zillion non-registered members lurking.

As far as Cuthie's statement...Moderators have access to the Moderator Panel and a few select boards that are private from the eyes of the member and lifetime/paid members. Moderators do NOT have access to the Administrator Panel where the IP ban would be located. (this is for ANY message board format, anywhere on the internet).

Moderators may or may not be able to see the IP of each poster here--some sites you can as a moderator see that information, but I don't remember seeing it when I was a moderator for MyCoupons.

Even if the Administrators of MyCoupons banned the IP of a troll or someone that wasn't liked by 100 but ok with the other 399,900 members, there are MANY proxy servers out there which would allow that or those persons to come back, but under a new nickname--so the problem doesn't really go away. Proxy servers are usually FREE but some are also paid for.

A Proxy server changes the IP address of the person using it, sometimes every 20 seconds.

To try to ban the Proxy server IP's ... well you might just as well delete all the boards at MyCoupons, because it can affect acrossed a broader spectrum than you might think.

When someone changes their internet provider (or if they are AOL), they do NOT have a static IP (meaning their IP doesn't stay the same)...they have a dynamic IP (which changes whenever the person logs onto the internet)...so is it fair to ban an IP broad spectrum? No, because it would affect EVERYONE that uses that internet service.

I would ask for a new board just for "in-fighting" and transfer all those kinds of posts to it, then people who like that sort of thing can post to their hearts content and the rest of us are spared the drama.

I was going to say the same thing - make a fighting board. I sometimes find the arguments here quite entertaining, to be honest. But I don't like having to wade through them to find my way back to the original post. So tell them to take it "outside" and let them go at it.

I ban people with multiple user names. People that only post to say rude stuff get banned too.
And I would love a board where you can call out people caught in lies, half truths, fibs, etc.

In all the years I've been posting here, it's the same members over and over who cause trouble. There are some sick people out there, and I've never understood why certain members haven't been banned.

Maybe there is a way to see who has been banned and the next topic of discussion could be those people. lol, could be as good as discussing who has the most posts!

As you all know if MC was to ban members, they will just come back under another name and cause more trouble, its been done in the past and will happen in the future, if we starting banning again. Just my little 2 cents worth.

I think that something that might help, is when a thread is deleted send a PM to the OP and briefly let them know why. It seems like it is in the middle of a thread that personal attacks happen and the OP is left hanging wondering what happened.

I know that it could become time consuming for the mods but I think that it would eliminate a lot of hurt feelings.

I would make them pass a test and write an essay as to why they think they should be allowed to contribute to The Cafe.

1) What do you hope to gain from your experiences as The Cafe?
2) Are you here to stir up trouble?
3) If so why?
4) Have you grown up and matured any in the last 5 years?
5) If so in what ways has your maturity changed you?
6) If you have ever made a wrong on this board would you be willing to publicly apologize?
7) Why would you not want to apologize?
8) Do you believe in taking and giving opinions without rudeness and trying to be tactful?
9) Do you believe in giving people second chances?
10) Do you believe people can change?

Bonus
Moment of Truth

What was the meanest or rudest thing you have ever said on the forum and that you are sorry for?

I would love to see a Debate board for ALL members. (not just premium members)

I would move all those nasty obnoxious posters to that board and let them fight it out!

The rest of us could live in peace.

But see, that's the problem - they don't want their own place to argue, I have said and I still think the way they conduct themselves is borderline criminal. They have a mental problem. When you already have no boundaries, then saying "here, please keep your vemon to this particular forum" does no good.

There's nothing they won't do and it's sad, they have followers who enjoy being in that company.

Catt,
Yes, It seems to be the same ones over and over.
I know we could use the ignor button , but what we need is to be able to block them from seeing us!

I agree they want to stay with us - just to cause trouble!
Thankfully they are a small percentage and I just consider the scource when I see what they write.

I agree -- nothing is more frustrating than having your post deleted and you have NO idea why

If, in fact, very few posts are actually deleted by the mods, it should be no problem to notify the OP as to why her/his post was deleted.

There are a few little things that I personally think I'd do differently. For example, notification of thread deletion would be one of them However, I haven't walked a mile in their shoes, don't understand the workload or the requirements/constraints of the adminstrators, so I would hesitate to suggest any changes in absense of that knowledge.

This is going to be done. But make sure you either have your pm's on or you have the correct email listed. And I will start to do that.

There is no need for another forum when the rop have been trounced upon again and again. Recently it was announced that there would be much less moderating and posts would need to be reported by others for a moderator to take action.

When a moderator is involved it certainly sets the bar . A few days ago, a moderator was attacked, personal information posted, and in turn, the moderator attacked another poster for supposedly supplying some of that information. Inexcusable but obviously accepted by mycoupons. That really means it's a free for all, apology or no apology, it was done.

Hold the Fort!

Who said anything was excusable or accepted by Mycoupons?
It is NOT a free for all. The boards were not put here to flame or harrass anyone. They are here for everyone's enjoyment. The boards need to have moderators. I have been a member here since 1999, and I have seen many great things happen along the way , just as I have seen the inexcusable. Not everyone will get along, Just as I tell my own children and the children that I teach.... Not everyone gets along, but you must respect everyone!

The internet is a great thing, but we cannot see each other and its hard to read and totally understand how one is feeling can we?

We are all grown adults, and we need to act like adults.

I am not giving a sermon , Its just that apologys were given to the right people. They might have been accepted or might not.
Leave it alone! If you want the boards to change, then do it. dont just sit there and pass judgement on everyone else. We want new members but how can we do that if this isall happening?

Mycoupons is and will continure to be a great community....... Lets keep it that way! and make MC #1

I did , plain and simple, no backtracking since it was there for all to read. I didn't say there was no need for moderators, I paraphrased the "change" of less moderation that was posted here in recent weeks. It really should have been stated as selective moderation.

Apologies, So now it's a feel good situation and it blows over and yet in the past, others have been banned for less? Much less. And you talk about respect.

You cannot tell me to leave it alone when this thread is an invitation to discuss mc regarding possible changes. Others have said make no changes, (essentially what I said) however that's ok, they didn't expand on the reasoning. No judgement was passed on my part when indeed the posters themselves presented everything. Nor am I just sitting here as you suggest, I have typed facts and asked why it is ok to have that incident happen.

How about giving it a rest, she-who-now-goes-by-the-username-deddlast?
It seems to have died down a little, and I think MOST people like it that way.

"what would you change if you were a mod here"

I'd teach people what it means to "give it a rest already, move on, get on with it" and stop beating the proverbial "deddhorse"

lol

Sorry, it just seems like some instances like small children in the sandbox, "I'm gonna hold my breath until I get what I want". It don't work with kids and adults should know better.

But that's what I'd change.

I resemble that remark but he certainly doesn't.

I agree -- he's beyond yummy in my book. Don't think I would have looked at him twice when he was 20 years younger.

Perhaps we should be considering a George Clooney Board. Although it may not be directly related to shopping, it will increase traffic and happiness.

And I would pay a penny to post on it.

I didn't say he was ugly. LOL I like GC... I just think he looked better when he was part of ER.

I don't remember him on any previous shows before ER though.

And he was also 'Booker' on Roseanne show. I think he had mullet-y then as well.
I think he has gotten better looking as he ages.
