Carbohydrate junkies - how do you control it?

I love carbs - sweets of all kinds, bread and bagels, potatoes....any way, shape, or form. I've put on about 15 lbs in the past year due to stress, life changes, and my love of carbs.

I am on week 2 of South Beach Phase 1 and doing OK.....but I know that any day or any moment, I could eat a cookie and then 10.

Anyone else in the same boat? What are you doing to fight it? Any "treat" or substitute good food that you find curbs the carb desire?

I will never do South Beach Phase 1 ever again... I became a different person on that diet. My DH did it with me and he changed too... I've never seen him like that. Yes, I lost weight but so not worth it because of how I felt!!! I even added 2 cups of milk/plain yogurt a day and ate/drank (LOL!) every *ounce* of olive oil that I was allowed!!! -- plus, I went grocery shopping and spent a month's food budget in one day on carbs (for the kids). That's bad!!!

Sorry for my rant but wow, those were some difficult weeks for our family... I do support you! Way to go!!! That really is something to be proud of accomplishing.

My way of handling life is eating a little bit of everything BUT in moderation (except for veggies!). This is easiest for me because I do still have children in my home and I don't like being a short order cook... This based on advice from my 88 year old grandmother.

Believe it or not the best dieting tip that I can offer is to chew a minty gum or brush your teeth with a strong minty toothpaste -- curbs my cravings better than anything.

Hmmm.....maybe that explains me lately. LOL.

Actually it really isn't too bad if I keep up with eating the stuff I'm supposed to have when I'm supposed to have it - and I think that's the key, so that you don't fall into hunger and craving.

What I find particularly hard is exercise. I swear that I need to carbs to be able to do the cardio that I try to do regularly. I just can't keep up to my regular level.

The other thing that is difficult is that I have to have forbidden foods in my house. I have an 18YO who is 6 feet and 200+ lbs and a 13YO who plays football. I make bag lunches for them every day. I made chocolate chip cookies for the football game today. Stuff like that. So I need to have food for them in the house.....and walk past a container of cookies all morning long. Ugh. But so far, so good.

Thank you for the encouragement.

Good luck.... I once did Atkins/South Beach for 4 months straight never cheat once, lost 55 lbs. Gained it all back.....as soon as I started eating normal food (carbs). I just find any diet that limits the variety of food you eat to be a "fade diet". If you love carbs it is going to be hard to continually not have them, especially once you have lost the weight.

I have learned many useful things from all the diets I have tried, and incorporated them into my lifestyle. I'm only shedding 5-7 lbs a month, but the changes I have made I know I can do for the rest of my life.

I wish I had great advice for you, except good luck! Remember after phase one you are allowed a few more carbs, so you just need to get thru the first 2 weeks. Keep up the great work, you are looking beautiful!

The kicker or motivation for me is that I did give up all breads, pasta, and rice for a few years - and lost 50lbs.....so I know I can do it! I have fallen off track and need to get back in control. I am really beating myself up for being such a worthless (and fat) slug now that I'm having to go buy new clothes in a larger size

Trust me your pants size has nothing to do with your "worthiness" I was naturally thin all my life, until I started having thyroid problems, then was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and gained weight. I wish I could say all my extra weight is due to my thyroid, but its not, I got depressed from being overweight and it made me eat more, hence gain more weight. I was only able to start taking it off, once I decided that my weight wasn't going to define me.

I hope you have a great support system, I am blessed with a husband who is truly supportive and has never said one things negative about my weight gain. It makes it a lot easier when the people around you are supportive, I have placed my entire family on the "new lifestyle" eating plan, and I think thats why I am going to be successful this time. When you aren't buying snack foods for everyone else in the house hold you don't feel deprived, since they aren't having anything you aren't.

P.S. At least you getting new clothes and no one knows what size your pants are

Don't forget to take a multi-vitamin during Phase 1 - they call that the South Beach flu and it sucks!

Have you checked out the South Beach Diet Forum for support. That helps. I've done Phase 1 twice now and do great but eventually Phase 3 gets to be more and more lenient until I'm eating a bunch of white sugar again. I need to start again. It's a great lifestyle. My doctor recommended it and it did wonders for my cholesterol & triglycerides. I highly recommend it, I just wish I could stick with it better.

Good luck to you.

I went on Atkins about 3 years ago and also lost about 40 lbs. I went through sugar withdrawls. I felt so horrible for about 5 days, and man, I was a Beeotch. I didn't realize how much of an addiction surgar was.

Thank the lord for Diet Soda. Even though you aren't supposed to drink anything with artifical sweetener for a couple weeks. I HAD to.

I also found sugar free gum a BIG help.

As far as the breads, pasta and rice...they were no real physical problem. I missed them, but I'm sure it was the sugar loss that made me feel so bad.

After Atkins I gained 30 of the 40 lbs back.

Polve - Can you explain how you've been able to keep only "good" foods on hand and still satisfy the needs/wants of kids? I need to figure that out!! And if its not too personal, what ages of kids do you have in your household?
Thanks,

With medication and numerous finger-pricks a day.

It's an awfully hard habit to break. I think quitting smoking was easier than quitting carbs.

I went threw my house and threw out all the open bad food, and took the unopened food to a food pantry. Which turned out to be about half of all the food in the house, since then I only buy healthy food. I'm not saying it wasn't challenging at first, because it was, but after about a week or two everyone got use to it. The main reason I did it was to help me stay on track, but now I think its best for everyone, I'm giving the kids great eating habits, which will help them lead bigger and better life's later. Snacks that I normally keep on hand is yogurt, string cheese, grapes, apples, bananas, graham crackers, low-sodium pretzels, sugar free jello cups, sugar free/reduced calorie pudding paks, carrot sticks, celery with putter butter, raisins, whole grain kix and Cheerios I think are the normal staples. When I go shopping every week, I do allow them ( kids and husband) to grab one "treat" but it does have to be a single serving, that way they don't feel total deprived and there aren't any left overs in the house. To tell you the truth, since we are all eating better the cravings for snacks have gone down. My 6 yr old use to have 2 or 3 snacks from the time he came home from school until dinner was ready is now down to 1. I also no longer make him a different dinner then what the rest of us are eating, its amazing what he eats now that I never thought he would eat. Last night we had turkey breast, acorn squash and bean soup he ate everything, no complaining, no sitting at the table for 4 hours, and he liked it! 6 months ago the only thing you might of ate was the turkey and that would even been difficult. The 13 yr old eats almost anything( he is very overweight), he is only here every weekend, but his mom has commented that she has seen small improvements in his eating habits. I'm sure the change would be more drastic in him if she would practice the same eating habits, but she doesn't feel that everyone in her house should suffer ( to be honest out of 5 people in her house 3 of them are overweight, so I don't know what she is talking about...lol) At first the 13 year old would want Twinkie, snack cakes, chocolate milk (all the time), chips, and candy when he came over. He would whine we never have anything "good to eat" but he has come around, if they are hungry they can only eat what you have on hand.

The thing I hated when I was doing Atkins/South Beach was making them carbed foods, and then not being able to eat. Now we do limit our carbs, and the carbs we try to make them all "good carbs". Even DH is totally on board, which I think was my biggest challenge, since he would eat a 2 lb bag of M&M's and lose 1lb, he is 6'4'' and only weighs 187, but he says he feels so much better. He know longer gets sugar rushes.

Good luck, in what decision you make.

I recommend that anyone trying to loose weight go and get the book Skinny Bitch. It is really informative and does a really good breakdown of some of the popular diets and what they do for you/to you. I find that cutting out a lot of meat and doing lots of fruit and veggies works for me. I have been doing soup, fruits and veggies (salad) for a little over a week and I'm doing pretty good. It's finding the stuff that you really like and keeping it all in moderation.

I too struggle with exercise as I am working from 7am to 6pm and have 3 kids. I hired a personal trainer that comes to my house once a week, but I am thinking of upping it to 2 or 3 times a week. It's not cheap and I am far from well off financially, but I feel this is something important and I am worth spending the extra money!

Tonight is my next session with the trainer and we'll see how the weight loss went for the first week. Even if it's not much, I'm happy as my pants are hanging down to my hips instead of over my belly button!

Are there any foods that you don't like that the kids love? For example...little debbie snacks are safe around here but I can't resist homemade chocolate chip cookies. I stopped baking cookies regularly and now if I do, I make only one batch.

I have found that once I get past the first week of low-carb eating, I lose the cravings. When I am off, I think about food all day long. I had success having one cheat day a week, but I wouldn't attempt this until you are well on your way to your goal. This can throw you off and give you more cravings.

Good Luck!

You can control it? I didn't know that.......LOL!

Seriously I am a big time Carb Junkie! Hi, my name is Mabear74, and I have an addiction........

I have tried many diets over the past couple of years, anything that limits or denies me carbs just doesn't work for me, because I will do really well for a while, then BOOM! I fall off the wagon hard! I have had some really good success over the past couple of months (lost 15lbs) by eating 6 times a day, about every 2-3 hours, and increasing my water intake. I am eating more then I did before, but since I don't let myself get hungry, I don't overeat....... And since I have a huge sweet tooth also I have found the Pria bars to be a life saver. I love their mint ch. chip bar. Saturdays are also our "cheat" day.....cause you can't watch football without some good food. Another thing that has worked for both DH and myself, we eat of the kids plated too! Same helping of food on a kid plate looks like a ton, put it on a big plate and it looks like little baby portions.....It's amazing how much difference it makes.

Good Luck.....I know I could never give up on carbs again.....especially my Taters.....I can't live without 'em!

Thank you for the tips and the laughs, too! You guys are funny.

I have gone to buying snacks only in individual serving sizes to help with portion control....but I guess that's kind of like being just a little bit pregnant, huh? I'm going to have to think about clearing out everything....I'm pretty cheap and it will be hard to part with perfectly good food. Hats off to you, Polve, and it will be nice if you can impact the 13YO who doesn't live with you all the time!

He will leave me if I don't get carb eating under control?? Oh well, I'm a big girl and can take care of myself.....I am self-sufficient and have a lot of choices...I wouldn't want to feel like weight was the key to a relationship. That wouldn't be the man for me!

This is an article published in this month's "Today's Diet & Nutrition" Magazine. It's on page 31.

~*~

The Glycemic Index, Are All Carbs the Same? by Lynn Grieger, RD

Thanks to the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, and numerous other weight loss plans that rely heavily on limiting carbohydrate intake, carbs have a bad reputation. But if you investigate carbohydrates further, you will discover that just about everything we eat contains them: fruits, vegetables, grain products (bread, cereal, rice, pasta, crackers, etc), milk, yogurt, and legumes. If you eliminate all carbohydrates, you don't have much left to eat.

Major health groups such as the American Cancer Society and the American Dietetic Association encourage us to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods contain carbohydrates, right? But they're somehow good for us?

Here's the truth: A carb is not just a carb. If you choose foods solely based on carb content, you are missing out on important nutrients, plus a whole bunch of good tasting foods. Instead of carbs, think glycemic index (GI), or better yet, glycemic load.

This is the first section of the very large article. If you would like the whole article and how to calculate Glycemic Load / Glycemic Index, post and I will type out the rest.

The South Beach Diet is very aware and mindful of the glycemic index of fruits, vegetables, and other food stuffs. South Beach is not a no-carb diet; it is a good-carb diet. Carb uber-strictness is only in the Phase1 "detox".

Appreciate the effort looking this up, but it's a subject that is treated very well in Dr. Agatston's books. I'm not familiar with Atkins though.

South Beach isn't really a low carb diet after Phase 1 (2 weeks). It's all about choosing the right carbs like those listed - whole grain, fruits, veggies, beans, etc.

Another tip I use in the winter when I get a sweet/chocolate craving is to drink a cup of sugar free hot chocolate.

no problem. Have never had to be on any kind of diet myself (well one... had to gain weight to join the military way back when), so not sure what any of the diets encompass or what they try to exclude.

As far as cookies... have you tried the devils food cookies made by Nabisco? they come in a green box... can't remember what the brand is...something like healthy smart or healthy choice or something?

They actually have a taste to them. What about stuff like popsicles to replace the want for cookies?

Those cookies....and really anything "lo-fat" are terrible for sugar carbs. The fat is removed and sugar added to make up for taste.

Yes, sugar free popsicles and fudgsicles are allowed as is sugar free jello. Those are my treats.

There are a lot of coupons out for the Jello Gelatin right now (they expire 12/31/07), so that should help you too. they are for 50/1

I'm interested! I've never been a diet buddy. Have you ever used Fitday.com? You calculate everything online and you can track your weight with it. I'm going to go get the book from the library.

I don't diet. Everything I've ever read is completely against dieting, because the weight fluctuation is not good on your body. You can't be on a diet forever, and most of the time when you go off the diet, you gain the amount you lost+ some back.
I run. I used to hate it, but did it to loose weight after baby1, and lost all plus 10 lbs, then same with baby 2, only didn't need to loose the 10 extra that time, and same with baby 3. I've always gotten back to my original weight with the running, and have even started doing 5K's. I run, because then I can eat my homemade chocolate chip cookies right along with my kids. Plus, the running tightens things up like no diet can!

Has anyone ever seen the show "Honey We're Killing our Kids?" It's on Discovery Health Channel. Polve has the right idea. This show pretty much shows you how to live, how to shop for groceries, and how to cook. Most of the food they do cook is gross! I think they do that just for a "response" from the kids. But check out the show. I made my kids watch it so they know what can happen when bad choices are made constantly..... turns out they love the show! then again I made them watch SuperSize Me. Poor kids don't even want fast food anymore!!

Another great resource is Sparkpeople.com. I use it religiously to keep track of caloric intake and output.

I refuse to do any "fad" dieting. Instead, I decided that I needed a lifestyle change about a year ago. Quit eating really bad stuff (haven't had potato chips since August of 2006) and monitored my portions and more importantly, started working out again.

I think any diet that restricts you from eating certain foods is setting a person up for failure.

I have two boys in the house so I know how it is to try to resist temptation when you have "junk" in the pantry. To me, I'd rather NOT eat something and NOT feel guilty about eating it rather than giving in, eating it and having a moment of instant gratification followed by hours of guilt.

Granted, I make bad decisions sometimes. It's about moderation and making good choices.

I agree that you have good carbs and bad carbs. Having had Gastric Bypass (along with NUMEROUS complications..but that's another storyline), I decarbed while in my losing phase. They do say that simple carbs make you crave more carbs. I am now so carbo-phobic that since I am now underweight and had a reversal and should be adding more fruits and whole grain carbs in, I'm having a hard time with it. But that part is all mental and I'm trying to work it out.

But we always ate our protein first..then good carbs. You'll find that protein (meats, poultry, eggs, beans..) will fill you up..and take longer break down instead of say a couple of slices of toast.

DD was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance and I bought the insulin resistance diet book, great book, and it tells how she can still incorporate good carbs into her diet..but match it with protein. Example...15 grams of carbs..say a slice of toast should be eaten with an egg with it...an apple, with an ounce of cheese or a cheesestick..very informative. She's been doing good and has lost some weight.

She also loves my protein shakes I make her and it helps her with her sweet craving.

I am feeling good this morning! Tuesday is my weigh-in day and I was down 4 lbs from last week for a total of 7 lbs since I began a week ago Saturday. Of course, one of my guys at work was quick to assure me that "it's just water weight". Gotta love him!

Thanks for the tips....I can't wait to get to Phase 2 to get my milk back...I really miss my milk, isn't that crazy??

I had signed up for SparkPeople a while ago, and used it for a couple months and completely forgot about it.......it was a great way to keep track of what I ate and how much water I was drinking...now if I can only remember my user name......

It's a processed carb. A lot of people are trying to quit eating so many processed carbs.

If you want to eat it, you should switch to whole wheat (and eat way less than most Americans eat). My kids actually prefer whole wheat to white now! Small accomplishment!

My DH was born in Italy and he loves the whole grain pastas out now. I also make meatballs that his mother and family love using ground turkey instead of beef/porl/veal.

Hey CJ!!! Way to go! YOU are almost to P2. Don't mess things up now... I know that the weekend was hard. It always is the hardest for me.

By the way, I believe that in Agaston's (how DO you spell that?) newer books, he recommends skim milk during P1. You could read more at the South Beach Diet forums, someone posts the name of the book: SB Diet Message Boards :: View topic - Protein Shakes

By the way, I might be wrong and message boards are not always right (gasp!!! and LOL!!!)... I never actually read this particular book but did find the info at that forum when I was on SBD and JUMPED on it because I too was craving milk.

Best of thoughts and wishes are being sent your way... You GO!

I use ground turkey and add a teaspoon of beef bullion powder (and other spices) to a pound. It has the same nutritional value of extra lean ground beef.

I prefer the Norbest brand. It comes in (5) frozen 1 pound chubs at my supermarket and is high quality. It is near the frozen turkeys at our Fry's which I believe is the same as Kroger's in other states??? It is around $1.79 per pound every day here... rarely on sale.

My family can't tell the difference when I use it for meatballs and they really actually like hamburgers made with it too!

Proud, I was really nervous serving them to my MIL and BILs Mom since both are from Italy and go back and forth every year. I thought for sure they would know and instantly banish me as an infidel. I had to tell them they were turkey and show them the wrapping because they wouldn't believe me. I always thought they were really good but when SIL asked me for the recipe I knew they had to be good.

I get the plain old Shop Rite or Purdue ground turkey breast here in Jersey. The flavored Jenni-O one kinda scares me, I like to add my own herbs.

Good for you!!!!! Feels good doens't it??

We should have a weekly weigh-in for people that are trying to lose weight. No matter what diet or lifestyle they are using......we could just do the pounds lost, if people don't want to give their weight.

That is a really good idea Polve........it always feels more real when you write it down, say it out loud, or post it......
