My entire family always gets the flu shot, mainly because I have such a bad immune system. I can't afford having them giving me the flu. However, this year my son was able to do the new FluMist. If your kids can sniff, I recommend the FluMist, why stick them if you don't need to.

Hubby has too, so it's not an option for him. DD and I do as well, but this year, DD got the flu mist thing and I'm getting the shot in a couple of weeks.

We always have..I grew up in a house that everyone got the flu shot...so my oldest who is 22 now started getting them long before it was trendy to give them to kids..my other 2 are special needs...the flu could very easily kill Michael...DH just started to take them the last few years..he got tired of him being the only one in the house with the flu lol..our appt is Thursday to get ours..the boys are on the call list when it comes in to my peds..and we get the pneoumonia shot every 5 years.

Absolutley. I wouldn't miss it! My 16 yr old gets one too. He has for a few years now. I've had type A and it's very, very nasty. I'm suggesting my 23 yr old get it this year too.

Absolutely not again. For the first time last year DH and I decided to get flu shots. Then we both got a horrible case of the flu right at Christmas. We'd never had the flu shots before last year and had never gotten the flu before. So those flu shots had to have caused us to get the flu last year. Someone would have to do a lot of convincing to get me to take another one.

My oldest gets one -she has alot of trouble with sinus infections so we try to get her one every year. I have to say that since we started getting her one- her sinus infections have even been less serious. Our problem is keeping her well enough to get one this year. We're supposed to go this Friday but we'll see if she can actually get it.

We all get it here. Last year the kids got the flu mist, and it was a PITA to try to schedule a time to go get their second dose. Especially since there was a shortage last year.

This year they will just get the shot.

I got the pneumonia shot last year and was told (by the nurse at the BoH) that I wouldn't need another one until I was 50. ???

I wanted DH to get the pneumonia shot as well, but they wouldn't give him one since he doesn't have a chronic illness.

I am not 100% convinced that the flu shot will prevent me from getting the flu. Have never gotten one and fear that if I do, I might wind up getting the flu like above poster. Also, if you have very young children, you should probably not get them this shot since it contains the preservative thermarisol, which is no longer in vaccines, but it is in the flu shot. Some are firm believers that this preservative, which they abruptly stopped using in vaccines, played a part with their child's autism.

Ok, did you actually get influenza???? The flu shot ONLY protects against influenza strains Type A and Type B. It will NOT protect against the stomach flu or any other nasty viruses that go around. There is a small percentage of people that will still get influenza even with the shot but it usually is a much milder form of it. There are always going to be some nasty bugs that mimic influenza but that doesn't mean the flu shot didn't work.

I took my 6 year old to Dr. this morning and they gave her one. She had sinus infection with nasal allergies and Asthma so they figured it best for her to have one. None of the rest of us have ever had one.

I googled and there are some flu vaccines that don't contain thermarisol. I don't know how easy they are to find though.

Yep all my kids get them. Tyler especially because he has asthma and they give it to the others as well. My husband and i do not get it as we don't qualify because we are healthy.

A lot of nurses/docs will tell you it is a lifetime thing...but hear drs. and ped specialist all say it needs to be done every 5 years...
That is the schedule we are on and I had Daddy on too and he never got it...no one has..and Michael has severe CP and everyone is amazed he has never got it..

I absolutely agree!! DH's grandma would get the "flu" at least twice a year. The first time was always from the flu shot.
My children have never had the flu shot. DH used to get them regularly but quit the year there was a shortage. I've been able to get them at school since I volunteer so much. DS had the flu last year and we had to pay for 4 rounds of Tamiflu which set us back about $300. I figure it would be cheaper to get the shot this year. As I was typing this reply, I remember that our normally lousy insurance is supposed to pay for the flu shot. I'll have to check it out.

I just have to ask:
Did you go to the Dr. and have the nasal swab done to diagnosis what you had as flu? If not, then you really don't know what you had.

It's kind of like when people say they have a migraine when all they really have is a headache. Migraines usually knock you on your arse! Most headaches do not do that.

I agree,...lots of times people think they have the flu and they don't...or they lump stomach flu in with regular flu which are 2 different animals all together...
Here is how to tell if you have the flu:

If there is a 50 dollar bill laying on your sidewalk and you go get it, you don't have the flu..
If you look at it and go too much trouble to move..
You have the flu...
I had to miss the flu shot one year because of the stage I was in on pregnacy...and I got it..OMG...I had forgot how miserable it would make you feel...I did not get it thank goodness until after the baby was born..but the times DH has got the flu and we did not have any insurance it would end up costing us hundreds in money by the time he missed work, went to the dr. got meds etc..
Look it up..more people die with the flu then most people think...and that is the only vaccine I give my boys..
