never wore glasses, now you need them to read?

If you never wore glasses, then now you are older, and cant read fine print. How old were you when you got the reading glasses? I see so many older people (I am 46) that dont wear glasses. Does that mean they can read fine print or do they just pull out their glasses when they need to read or maybe they got laser eye surgery. Maybe they wear contacts.
I want to hear from those who need glasses to read, and what age did you get them, do you need them just to read? Are you farsighted? I know people older than me who dont wear glasses to read. I know people who are a couple years younger than me who dont need them to read. I know everyone is different. I got reading glasses when I was in my late 30s. I may not have needed them all the time. So, I want to hear from those who need reading glasses.

DH had to get reading glasses last year, he was 43. He only wears them when he's online or reading scymatics at work. He was having trouble seeing things double and blurred when trying to focus on them.

I think this will vary greatly and the important thing is to see an eye doctor with any change noticed. It is very common in the mid 40's to need reading glasses, thus you won't see people wearing them all the time. Typically the 1st maginifcation is ok with otc glasses from Target or Walgreens, etc. I think the 1st magnification is 125, but could be wrong on that.

I started needing mine at about 43 also. I only need them for reading....and I am more than 5 years down the road. I was actually hoping that I might need "real" glasses, because my medical insurance covers eye care, and the other teachers I work with were able to get colored contacts with the insurance. But, nope, optometrist/opthamologist said I only needed them for reading. I asked him about getting prescription glasses, because I had just been using the dollar store reading glasses.....he told me as long as I had the right magnification, they were basically the same as getting them at the optical places.

I have been nearsighted my whole life. If you are across the street and I don't have my contacs in then I will not recognize you no matter what.
Now that I am in my middle age I am developing old lady sight. I cannot see close up and far away at the same time. I HATE reading or magnifying glasses and to my husband's constant embarrassment I pull out a lorge round magnifying glass (a la Sherlock Holmes) to look at menus, labels, papers, etc.
If I am wearing my glasses I just push them up. But I almost always wear contacs so I am in a dilemma as to what to do.
I don't want to wear glasses all the time so unless it gets really bad I will keep using the big owl eye.

When I wasnt able to read up close, I got glasses, but the eye dr checked my far vision, and for some reason, gave me glasses for that too. I feel like I look like I have magnifying glasses on my eyes now. Like the sherlock homes magnifiers in front of both eyes on frames. They look like crap! LOL I hate to wear them, but I cant see at all up close. I do have contacts to read with, but my eyes get tired and I eventually have to take them out.

TBH, wearing glasses all your life, then finding out you need the dreaded"B" word is almost, if not more traumatic. At least it was to me. For some reason that word is associated with "old" LOL

Hottie and Beth, I so feel your pain. I've been englassed for 40 years and last week found out I needed the dreaded Bi-blahblahblahblahs. I started to cry because I'm also a menopausal mess and my husband felt so bad he let me get the really expensive ones. They're really nice, you can't tell by looking at them, but I still know what they are.

I started wearing glasses when I was 12 and moved to contacts at 17...I am nearsighted. When my mother turned 60 I found myself in need of reading glasses over my contacts for reading books, newspapers, etc. I can do it without them but it is way easier with my little +1.50 readers. Oh, and you note I blame the readers on my mother's age, not my own....LOL

I have needed bifocals for about 10 years now.Until a few years ago,I had 2 pair of glasses. One for reading, and one for distance. Then I got a pair of transition bifocals.I love them.I just got new glasses, and I couldn't afford the transitions this time,so I got lined bifocals.I HATE them!I can see the line all of the time.To use the computer,I have to pull the screen to the front of my desk. The lined bifocal does not have the intermediate sight, therefore,I can not see my computer screen.
I started a fund to get myself some new transitions,I can't take this much longer.I go from new glasses,to old glasses, back to new, etc. It is as bad as when I had two pair, instead of bifocals.

No glasses yet, but my time is coming. I have noticed very slight changes over the past year, and I know my age is creeping up on me.

Welcome to the club. Another member here that needed reading glasses beginning in early 40's, just like my mom before me. Can't read or do computer work without them. Had an eye exam last year and was told I'd need prescription glasses w/in a few years. Stinks, doesn't it? For now, specs from the dollar store work just fine.

Sure am glad they're only $1.00 per pair. At the rate I lose them in the house and work, I can still afford replacements.

My dd just got bifocals - she's 13!!

She does not have a vision problem like most people (near/far sighted), she has a focusing problem - mainly at school - when she goes from reading a book or taking notes to looking up to the board, her eyes won't focus fast enough. 2 years ago, the dr. said she'd probalby outgrow it. Now they said they think she will still outgrow it but suggested bifocals to help while she's in class. Luckily they have lineless bifocals that they can put into cute frames. She only has to wear them during class or while doing homework, not all the time.

WOW!

I just started noticing that my eyes were having a hard time adjusting from looking at a distance to reading, so bi's were coming quick until I had my Lasik done a month ago. I am 37 and have had glasses since I was 8. The Lasik pushes off the need for bifocals for a few years, but not permenantly. I was blind as a bat before the surgery.

I got my first pair of glasses (with bifocals) when I was 40.
Now I have trifocals which makes computer work so much easier.
I adjusted right away to both.
I don't care that I seem old as long as I can see!
But then again, I AM old! But very young at heart!

I ended finally getting reading glasses this spring at 43. I really needed them about 6 months earlier, but tricked my 2 DS' into helping me read (haha). They know now what I was doing (told them when I got the glasses). They didn't think it was funny at first, but now do. They have learned to question peoples' motives. They were too trusting of people and have been burned before.

My screen name isn't Kelliiii for nothing! (get it? Kelli with 4 i's....four eyes?)

I have reading glasses but I wear them mostly when I'm on the computer....helps with the glare.

I'm 47 and I don't have reading glasses yet, but I know the time is near. I can read a book or menu without any trouble, but for really fine print or crafts like beading, it helps to have those OTC 1.25 glasses.

This happened to me when I was 42, (I'm now 45) Wait, let me get my glasses to see the keyboard, Anyway, I was 42 and like overnight I couldn't read the novel I was involved with! I'd never had eye problems before so it was hard to take....I get reading glasses from the dollar store, they come with a case and are just fine for me, for now. BUT...I am finding that I need them more often as time goes by....getting old is a drag.
Oh, by the way, my hearing is fading too...I said "MY HEARING IS FADING TOO"

I got my glasses when I was 41. I only need them to read. I rarely take them with me, and dh gets so upset b/c when we go out to eat I can't see the menu. It came up on me very quickly. Seems like one month I could read everything then the next month I needed glasses.
Just another thing that comes with age.

How could you be 47 and not need them? I just dont get it. I will be 47 next month. If I go out, I hate to wear them, so I am constantly asking my kids what something says. I wear my contacts to read. Thats the only reason I got them, so nobody would look at me like I am old and need reading glasses. I just cant see anything up close. I see some people holding their book or small print way out at arms length, but that doesnt do any good for me. I cant see close, or far when it comes to reading. I cant even look at a photo and make it out. I can see the tv fine though. makes me so mad to have to grab the reading glasses first thing in the am, or at night when the contacts are out for bed.
I dont want to be old.

At 41 I noticed a slight problem reading. Now, at 42, I pretty much need reading glasses for any small print closer than about 2 feet away. Ahhh, the joys of aging.

I don't know. I think my parents got them in their early 50s. I became near-sighted when I was in my 20s. I think I've heard that if you're near-sighted, you don't need reading glasses as early as people who were never near-sighted. I read books at a normal distance, but I have to wear my glasses to see the TV, if that's any consolation! I've got a problem with one knee that makes it hard for me to climb and descend stairs -- that makes me feel old!

I have noticed that if you are nearsighted, you dont need them as early as if you were far sighted. My husband is near sighted, and 47. He reads without his glasses on. Seems that far sighted people need them earlier in life.
