Help! Infected Thumb?

I bite my fingernails. I know that I should stop. I'm weak. My left thumb appears to be infected. The edge of my thumb is swollen, red, and throbbing. I do wish to make a trip to the doctor's office for this. I'm too embarrassed for them to see my fingernails.

Any home remedies I could try?

Nope. Go see the dr before your finger gets really bad. Dr's offices have seen everything and then some.

My daughter recently had a similar problem on her cuticle on the outisde of her thumb. She went to the doctor who lanced it and drained it, then put her on antibiotics. Before she went to the doctor, we tried soaking it in hot water and putting neopsporin on it, but nothing seemed to work. The infection can become really severe if you don't take care of it. I hope you feel better soon!

A friend of mine had this: Paronychia Nail Infection

You should see your doctor!

This sounds gross, but my mom did this when we were kids. Break an egg and pull out the skin of the shell. It will be slimy, so have some paper towels on hand. Wrap the skin around your finger and cover with a bandage. That eggshell skin will draw out the infection. I swear by this method, still use it myself and have used it my children who also nibble on their nails.

The nurse at my son's school recommended a few drops of bleach in hot water. Soak 2 or 3X per day. This did help.

Hope that you are feeling better.

This is exactly what I did. I then put antiobiotic ointment on it. It feels great now. I avoided a visit to the doctor's office.

Thank you to everyone for your replies and first aid advice!
