Mammograms

Has anyone ever had one? Do I need to go to my regular family doctor for these or a specialist or what? I 'm at that age where I'm supposed to get one and being national breast cancer awareness month I figure why not.

Great idea- good for you. My ob/gyn gives me a referral every year for one. Then I go to a radiology center, same one very time so they have your last films to compare them to.

I am pretty sure that any doctor can send you to a radiology center and you can have one. My OB/Gyn doc has on in his office and is very convenient. I go in for my yearly check-up and they take care of that the same day--only one visit!

I am 35 and going for my first one on Tuesday. My ob/gyn and I discussed it at my last visit and he said they are now recommending that women get their baseline at 35, rather than 40. He referred me to a radiology center, as well.

It can depend on your insurance. With our insurance I don't need a referral. I just go yearly to the mammogram center. They send me a postcard with the results and also one to my family doctor.

I just wanted to add, that along with the mammgram, if you have incidences of breast cancer in your family, you can also get the breast sonogram if available in your area or radiology lab.

I only mention this, because I didn't realize this was available until just recently when I had gone in for an ovarian sonogram, which I go every 2 years because of ovarian cancer on both sides of my family. The technician performing the sonogram, told me the breast sonogram was available also to those with breast cancer incidences in the family.

This is a great tool, along with having the yearly mammogram. Unfortunately the insurance companies as far as I know, will not pay for the breast sonogram unless the doctor clearly states it's because you are at a high risk due to other family members having it.... mother, aunt, sister etc.

Also if you have had a boob job the cost is more because they have to take more pics. At least that is the way it is at my docs.

I've been getting them for several years. Always a good idea and a relief! They aren't so bad. My doctor sends me to the local radiology office for it.
