'Your Family Board' -- What do you miss?

I was not around when the 'Your Family Board' was here, however, we still see posts about people missing the YFB.

Can you all let us know what you miss?

Thanks so much!

I don't see a difference between the YFB and the Cafe....so I would be interested to see what other say they are missing from the old YFB.

It's the people who are missing. The posters who made YFB what it was. Not any specific topics or threads.

That is hard...

As I said, I was not a member of that Board. We were in the middle of moving.

Have you been able to invite any of them back? Why did they leave? I missed all of it...

I'm just trying to understand. Thanks.

That board was before me also, but this board seems family oriented...

I agree the people and the atmosphere, Not that there is anything bad about this board but the YFB had a different feel to it. It is hard to explain.

We used to have a nightly chat and would sit and gab. I remember Barb I think it was used to log into the chat and give out prizes. BTW I still have my "My Coupons" T-shirt.

We also did alot of exchanges I still have my ornaments from the yearly exchange that I display proudly at Christmas time.

The topics and the opinions were a bit more free back then too.

As I said this is a great board and I enjoy coming here and reading everyday. I don't post alot anymore as I don't have alot to say.

The YFB was a great board as well and honestly no matter how hard you try this board will never be the YFB. And that is ok it is it's own entity and we should work to make it a even better board on its own rather than trying so hard to make it the old YFB.

Besides SAMMY? I was so glad to see her again. It was definitely at least partly the people. You could ask something about your kids and get a wide range of opinions on the matter. We had some good debates too. I wonder if any of the oldies will come back if or when the board returns??

Personally, I think that YFB was taken away for no apparent reason. Some people will tell you that there were some mean and nasty people there. But, there are people like that everywhere. It was no worse than any other board anywhere on the Internet. Although, I will suspect that some will disagree with that.

It was a wide array of personalities. Yes, I was at the board at that time. The administration at MC just closed the board down. Took it away with no warning. They used the excuse that they could not or would tolerate what was being posted on there. But, I think it was planned well in advance of just taking it away.

This was how many years ago? People have gone on to other boards. Some have come back. Some will never come back. But, in all honesty, I don't think that the era of YFB will ever come back. That was a different time and a different place. It is just a memory now.

I wouldn't imagine that so many have actually gone per se...just maybe appear in different form.

LOL - How true! Occasionally they out themselves though....for example, having an opinion and history with YFB yet a 2007 join date.....and other such interesting behavior.

I agree...different feel. It got a lot nastier at times but it was allowed to be nastier. We are much more moderated now which is good and bad. I wasn't part of the "cliche" per se from YFB but I liked coming to it. I was more of a lurker back then...almost entirelly on AT which is the opposite now LOL

As someone mentioned, maybe it *felt* different because of the timing that the YFB was in place vs now??? It seems that just within the last few years, the internet has become a less trusted place and rightfully so with all of the scams, predators, and dishonesty that is so prevalent on internet message boards... sadly.

I remember back when MC started. People were a lot more willing to meet each other in person and give out personal information online. I personally have just have really never felt comfortable with that.

Thank you to those who are sharing...

I agree with Sexysmurf, this board seems to be moderated more than YFB. Maybe it was the time, as Cuthie mentioned. I think people spoke more freely, and were open about their personal lives, sharing picture of their families. Perhaps in this day and age, people are more apprehensive to do so, and understandably so. I also agree that the YFB board unjustifiably vanished one day. I think a couple of posters were nasty and scheming, and that was the end of it; no warning and the board was gone. I thought it was a bit extreme to take it away, but those in higher places must of thought it was the best thing to do. Anyway, glad to have The Cafe.

Cuthie, I was here then and I have been wondering why people think is so different??

I remember people arguing over silly things like the best crayons. Also breast feeding was another hot topic.
But then again you could get flamed pretty easily!

There were some nice things like when people posted pictures of their Christmas trees or kids Halloween costumes. (I am sure that could be done here if anyone cared to )
Sammy often had a great project going.
A bunch of us bought way too many dolls from idolls

MC was a very active coupon and shopping board too.

Oh yes, the heated crayon debate!! And who can forget our favorite poster "momtotj" aka aka aka I don't even remember all the names ha!! Although, she still lurks on here, so lets all wave

I think after they shut down the YFB, this whole site went down hill. I used to actively post on all the other boards and I remember the GSB was always hopping. Now I honestly find my deals on other sites because of the way everything was handled back then.

There is a lot of the old timers who left cause of various reasons.( the family board just getting taken away with out warning, the huge clover war when lots of folks paid 20.00 for "better boards with better deals" and received nothing near what was promised) and there is folks who claimed to get all mad and peed off and leave only to come back as someone else.
But I think the main reason we miss the family board is that the old gang is not here. Most of us old timers have been around here so long we KNEW each other. I mean really KNEW each other. we knew real names for the screen names, we knew what was happening with their kids and family. WE were a family! If someone was missing for a few days and didnt post, we worried about them. Then there was a few who ruined the whole thing for everyone. Now, there is sooooo many people, so many Trolls, so many who are just here to take whatever they can, run and change their names and come right on back to scam whoever they can again. The cafe is a great board but I dont think there is any way to go back to the way the family board was nor will we ever get back all the great members who left when the family board was taken away without even a warning. That was just plain rude. I feel the powers that be should have just banned who ever was causing all the problems and dealt with it instead of taking the easy way out and basically smacking all of us on the hands for something we didnt do and to tell you the truth, most of us didnt even know that there was problems with some members. We didnt find that out till the board was taken away. And I bet alot of members who were here then are wondering just how long this board will last till POOF! Its gone too.

You just described internet life on several boards, not just one. As the years have gone by, people get more and more brave and feel untouchable by the anonymity of the internet. Nothing to do with any one board or a couple boards, it's just the way it is.

I know people have good memories of the YFB, but why not look FORWARD instead of BACKWARD? Yes, I know that's the topic of this thread, but it's far from the first time it's been mentioned in many threads. There are plenty of great members here NOW....shouldn't that be the main focus, instead of "It'll never be the same" or "It was so great then!".

No, littlejo, I'm not meaning this at you. But your comment reminded me of other times it's been said.

As both a moderator and a member, I've firmly believed a board is what YOU (general you) make of it. I've seen so many threads and people here that make me smile and think "This has turned into such a cool place!"

It's like a young girl that had her first boyfriend break up with her - if she moans and groans all the time, staying home feeling sorry for herself, she'll end up missing out on a lot of fun things and fun people. If the thoughts here are often going to "It'll just never be the same for this that and the other reason", that's how it'll stay.

Thank you, littlejo, for the use of your comments to express a feeling of mine. I hope I didn't offend you in any way, that wasn't my intention. Your personal thoughts helped me express some general ones for me.

I don't know all the "whys' of the board being gone. I do remember a LOT of behind the scenes frustration at constant moderation. Too much "babysitting" had to be done and who here WANTS to do that 24/7? Would anyone here want that kind of "sentry duty" on a bulletin board? Me thinks not.

Ban people? What if they just keep coming back? There are so many ways to get around ISP and IP bans, it's not even funny. Banning people nowadays can cause even worse things to happen. Too much knowledge and no fear (anon internet again) makes for great ugliness. (No, I'm not going to give examples and give people ideas! LOL!) What solution is/was there, that could be implemented, that didn't cause even MORE work for moderators, yet maintained the board peacefully for the members?

I didn't like knowing that board was gone either - I felt bad for those that enjoyed it so much. But having been/being on BOTH sides of this particular coin, I can see both sides of the issues. Members aren't always privvy to behind the scenes goings on and what it's doing to/what's being done/said/PM'ed/emailed/ to those that are trying to keep the peace.

Thank you, littlejo, for the use of your comments to express a feeling of mine. I hope I didn't offend you in any way, that wasn't my intention. Your personal thoughts helped me express some general ones for me.

I, personally, enjoy this board a lot more than the previous one. So many of you have made me laugh, cry, think about things in a different way, experience difference of thought and opinion. There is plenty of value - equal or MORE value in my book and I would venture to guess many others - of this board as well. I think the members here have made this a GREAT board to visit.

I don't care if you're old members, old members in "new clothes", or newbies - I appreciate each and every one of you that give me the above!

*kicks the soap box out of the way*

Hehe, how in the world did I get on there?

Excellent point, Ambrianna! Sometimes by looking backward, healing can begin. I do believe that some of our members may have needed an explanation as to what happened to YFB. They need closure??!!!

And so, your post is much appreciated... well thought out and explains a lot. Thank you.

I to agree with the above posters that say the yfb had a different feel to it. It was the old posters and different debates we had. I don't like nasty debates, but i like a good debate where maybe we can learn from all different sides of things. I miss the old posters and often wonder where they went to.

Me three. I think this board is easier for newbies to jump into because it doesn't seem to have the history and cliquish feel to it. It also is minus the Jerry Springer aspect that I found in the YFB....but then again, there are people that like that kind of thing....the fighting, the over-the-top personal stories, etc

Too each their own, I guess. But The Cafe is the board that we have, so why not make the best of it??

Is your glass half full or is your glass half empty?

Honestly there were times I closed a window to YFB crying at night, there were some NASTY people there who didn't care what they said to people. I don't mind a dissagreement, but once the gang got in on a topic, you were dead. I had a couple of names blocked just so I had the nerve to read the posts, they were so bad.

I missed the board because there were times when I just needed to talk to someone or get an opinion and it wasn't there, but I am glad it is gone and there is a newer better version.

Ah, yes, I remember StBernadette with all the ailments and what not, but they didn't seem to keep her from riding the bus all over town to get the best deals....(unless I'm remembering it wrong).....

I agree.

It seemed like the YFB had a lot more members who were willing to actually participate so that -- no matter what the topic was or what advice/suggestions were requested -- there were always a lot of people willing to add their input.

To me, it just seems like the topics that were often discussed/debated were much more interesting because there was less moderation so members weren't afraid to get into meatier discussions.

This is my first time visiting mycoupons in....gosh, I figure a little over a year. Last time I logged in, they didn't even have a "cafe". I stopped visiting when YFB was deleted. I felt that the boards went downhill and the mods were heavyhanded. Maybe I'll be back, it seems a bit better now. My oldest memory from the boards is the member Modemouth.....anyone remember her, she posted ALL the good deals.

Modemouth was such a lovely person, I adored her. So kind.

The only thing I can remember about StBernadette was how she posted about her medical problems, which is one thing: but there seem to be, for lack of a better word, amateur PI's, who would take her location and line it up with medical facilities, used with her address she gave during a transaction and it got really ugly - but it didn't stop her from posting, so I went from feeling sorry for her to just wishing she would use some common sense.

Personally, I enjoyed the family activity of these forums when we posted our traditions, and holiday activities and you are not going to find a more generous loving group than at MC - some of us have been together since '98, which is when I first joined but our memberships were set back during a forum update. That's 9 years, longer than some marriages!

Webhead was also always loaded with incredible deals... I'll always remember her 'I'm retiring' post. Made me sad.

Now, are we talking about the YFB or Look What I Found? LOL...

I am one of those that joined in 1998 and it was re-set in 1999... etc. I don't think I posted much back then though -- I honestly don't remember!!! -- but I also was incredibly busy with eBay back then ... I've mainly become a blabbermouth the last couple of years. LOL!

I also was on in98. I remember Abrant, blackjuice, the old timers on this thread, and many others. I don't have the time to spend on boards any more, but htose sure were fun times.

Just curious and wondering how I missed it... LOL. Of course, the story of my life is 'a day late and a dollar short'.
I think it was elminated when I got pregnant with my ds. My guess is late 2003/early 2004. After the clover wars (I think I still have mine) it really died down.

Does anyone remember laura swanson (i think that was her name)? She was the freebie queen. She stocked up on tons of food. I think she had several kids too. I always liked the advice she gave.

I have been here awhile and remember the YFB, I remember posting that I was pregnant with my youngest and she is 6 now I love this board but miss some of the old posters, like blackjuice, and dee (I forgot her user name but she had some good advice) tiggersmom ( I felt so bad for her after her baby passed away and wonder how she is doing) and but there is one poster who I owe a huge thank you too and she is still here.... MattnCatt. She posted the best receipes on the cooking board and I was able to get a copy of a book of her recipes that another user had put together (I am so sorry I forgot who did it, but a big thank you to you too) and I may not be the best cook, but I have to say whenever I have people over for dinner and make one of her dishes, I get lots of compliements. so Thank you Catt

Aw honey, you are welcome - knowing you are in the kitchen, making the house smell good makes me very happy!
