My car was broken in to.

Last night i was sitting on the couch had the outside light on the porch on. I was watching tv and heard some noise outside, but figured it was across the street or next door. I looked quickly and saw my van light on inside and i saw a kid which id say is around 19-20 yrs old. I got up and yelled to hubby our car is broken in to the kid quickly slammed the door and took off, my husband ran outside and noticed the other kid was across the street inside someone elses car. I quickly called the police once i saw the kid run from our house and they came out with the k9 dogs to try to get a scent. Unfortuantly they didn't catch them as they said if they did they would notify us. In all the yrs we lived here never has this ever happend i really never thought much about locking my doors in the driveway, but now we will always remember to. We do have a dvd player in there and the cops said thats the types of things kids are after. They stole my husbands work keys, but there is no tags that say where he works, but they are changing their locks anyway. I would love them to think its house keys and try to use the keys here with the dog :P Our dog would chew em to pieces in a heartbeat. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS!!

Oh my... That is frightening. I'm so glad that you heard them before they were able to get anything. Here's hoping they return with the keys... Grrrrrrrrrrr!! Honestly, I hope that they do NOT come back. I'm sure you had a hard time sleeping last night.

I'm so glad to read that no one was hurt.

They didn't take anything except my husbands work keys. I scared em off before they had the chance to take anything else. I slept pretty good, but i did keep waking up peeking through the window to see if anything was going on. We notified our neighbors last night of what happened so that they was aware of what was going on. I am kinda hoping they attempt to tonight so i can try to get the cops to get them so that they don't destroy or steal from other people. My doors will be locked so they won't be able to get in.

Maybe you could park your car a couple of houses away and keep just a few lights on, if it looks like you are not home, they might be tempted to try using the keys. I hope you are able to catch them! We always keep our car doors and house locked even when we are here. We live in a safe town, but we got into the habit when we lived in the Atlanta area and it just stuck with us. I even lock my car door when I go pay for gas and the gas pumps are only about 15 feet from the store because when we lived in ATL that was a big thing going on then, people would snatch your purse out of your car when you went to the walk up window to pay for gas. It only takes a second of not being aware and you can be out of luck.

We live in a pretty safe neighborhood and i used to always forget to lock the car doors until my husband reminded me that our remote garage door openers were in the cars and any one could get into our house through the garage. Never leave them unlocked now.

I try to tell my DH this same thing! We have two vehicles in our driveway (the two that HE drives) and he never locks them--and they both have garage door openers in them! We lock our garage door ("I" lock the garage door going into the house) but he has tools and fishing rods in the garage. I told him that one morning he is going to wake up and they are going to be gone. Myself...I keep NOTHING in the garage (or in my car in the garage) that is valuable to me!!

The more i been thinking about it, he had to have only opened the front door cause his keys was in the middle console and i heard a door slam not like my sliding door. So im thinking he may think its the keys to the car and wanted to try to steal it. Thanks for posting your experiances this makes me more and more aware of how i need to be with things. Also for instance anyone remember from a few days ago a women went to the grocery store with her infant and the baby was with her the whole time and a lady walked by and ran off with the cart and baby? People have nerve they do it right in front of your eyes. Unreal.

Are you serious? You think the op should "tempt" them back and "catch" them? Seriously?

yea i don't think i will be doing that. If i left my car up the road its possible they would break a window and/or damage my whole car. Thanks everyone for your input and responses.

If she wants to catch them like she stated, then yes. I wasn't the one that wanted to catch them the OP said she wanted to catch them. If it was me and I wanted to catch them that is what I would do, set a trap for them. I would be angry for being violated and I would want to catch them if possible and let them spend some time in jail even if it's only a few hours and they post bail (which they probably wouldn't have the money or they probably wouldn't be breaking into cars). I would make a police report, I would also increase security around my house to deter this from happening again, we lock our cars, we have flood lights, we have dogs, we have guns, so far where we live now nothing has ever happened to our house. There alot of things you can do to protect yourself instead of leaving yourself like a sitting duck. I am an ex-counselor for gang members, DH is a drug and alcohol counselor, gang members and addicts will take advantage of the "easy prey" if it looks like it's going to be a bit difficult or that they might get caught, they will move on to easier pickings. Just my opinion.

I read somewhere to sleep with your car keys beside your bed. That way, if you hear a noise , you could press the panic button , and that would usually freak somebody out enough hopefully for them to take off. Ihave told my girls to do this if they ever even THINK that they hear something. Couldn't hurt. We also sleep with outside lights on, and have dogs that bark. I am like the only single Mom on my street, and I feel like it wouldn't be too hard to figure out only females live here. Except , of course, my precious angel baby boy!!!

I'm so sorry!! This happened to us when we lived in Vegas. They stole our stereo. We'd only been married a couple years and were poor, broke kids. More than the stereo tho was how violated we felt. I was SOOOOOOOO angry and the idiots that did it. We'd worked hard to get that stereo installed and in one minute it was gone (they even cut the wires).

Agh, that was almost 20 years ago and it still makes me mad to think about it.

She, the op doesn't want to catch them, she wants her dog to be involved:

I would love them to think its house keys and try to use the keys here with the dog :P Our dog would chew em to pieces in a heartbeat. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS!!

Ditto thanks for clarifing that. I don't personally want to catch them or set a trap for them as i have 4 children and i worry about their safety. Our car is our only transportation for my husband to get to work and doctors appointments i don't need and want my car damaged. I didn't mean to stir up anything here. I hope they are caught so that nothing else happens to anyone.

This happened to me a year ago. Dh was gone on a camping trip and I was asleep. I woke up to a car door shutting and hearing kids laughing. I thought it was my ds and his friends coming home. I looked out the window and saw a car parked at the end of the driveway ( we have a fairly long drive 60 feet, maybe) and 2 teenagers running down my driveway carring something with them.

I called the police and waited for them to show up before I went out to see what was missing. The only things missing were a 6 pk of propel water and some old cell phones I had to donate to the battered womens shelter.

The boys that done it were never caught but they did hit several more cars taking minor stuff, bingo cards from 1 car and throwing them all over the road. lol...

Sorry if I misunderstood, the above statement along with the one qoted about the dogs lead me to believe that the Op wanted to catch them.

That is something I have never thought of. Probably b/c I don't own a car with a panic button, lol. Good idea though !!

Np i am not upset with it. Sometimes it is hard to know what someone is thinking just on a message board.
