12yo wants a MySpace Page

I have never used MySpace other than looking at Weird Al's page and stuff like that! LOL.

Currently, our Net Nanny software blocks MySpace and I'm afraid to allow him access to MySpace because of all of the stories that I've heard.

Do any of you have any suggestions for us so that we can help him set up a SAFE MySpace page? or should we just say 'forget it'!

I'm concerned for his safety above all.

Thanks in advance.

You can make his profile private. Then only people you let in can see it, like his friends. Now what is this about Weird Al having a myspace page?? I looked before and didn't see one!

My older two (ages 15 and 12) have one. I also made one and had them add me as a friend (of course since I am Mom I can't be in their top friends list, but thats ok) and this way I am able to chek their pages to see who they have listed as a friend and the comments that they are being left. So far I haven't run into a problem. I also noticed that since they added me, a few of their freinds parents did the same thing. Also, I made them set their page to private so they have to know the person who is requesting to be their friend.

When my nephew wanted one my DSIL had him make his profile private. Since I know more about the internet then she does, she asked me to make a MySpace page. One of his rules for his MySpace is that I have to be one of his friends.

It has worked well and I have only had to call him on one thing.

My 12 year old DD has one, and she has to keep her profile private, and she is only allowed to access from the laptop in the kitchen or living room, so we can keep an eye on her.......I was very nervous about her doing this, but so far all has been fine.....

My DS who just turned 13 has one and has had it a while. His is private and I think I even have it where to add him as a friend you have to know his last name. I know they passwords to all the sites they go to that they have to have passwords. The rule here is I'm to have the password as long as they live in this house. The day they move out they can change them all if they wish but not til then.

We've had no problems at all from Myspace. I actually love it myself and Dh and I both have pages.

I have passwords for my 15 and 16 yr olds. They know I can check their messages at anytime, and I have. I am also one of their friends.

my 14 yo dd has one as well. I am one of her "friends" and as luck would have it, many of her friends have requested me as their "friend" as well. This way, I can monitor conversations back and forth. You'd be surprised at how many of her friends are stupid enough to post pics of them selves with alcohol or weed.

Make sure the profile is private and the pictures as well. The pictures sometimes default to a setting where everyone can see them.

The only thing that I was concerned about is my dd posted her city (which we have deleted) and she would answer those stupid surveys that float around the bulletin board. (In case you aren't familiar with the bulletin board, it is a board where you can post things, but the posts are only viewable by your "friends") Anyway, she'd answer with way too much info... like mom's maiden name, pet's name, favorite teacher, etc. These, to me, are all ways that people find out more about you than you realize you are giving out. So now she answers sarcastically if she answers at all.

I appreciate the advice...

I understand setting to private for his own page but it also concerns me that he'll have access to the rest of MySpace if we open an account for him.

Is that how it works?

I suppose I need to sign up for an account myself (!) in order to do some snooping around and learn for myself before giving it the okay.

Just to let you know it is against Myspace's TOS for anyone under the age of 13 to have a myspace.
I would probably let my 13yr old have one...but, I would have to be on their friend's list...they wouldn't be allowed to add anyone they didn't know in real life...and they could only visit friend's pages. Myspace is a scary place when you click around enough. Oh, and it would be definately be a private myspace.

I guess letting your child have a myspace page has to be up to you as the parent. it is a individual based decision. I personally would let my 12 year old have one. My 16 year old has one and we do not have a problem with him mis-using it. He stays in touch with friends from other schools and his friends at his own school. He is very responsible and does not do anything that would cause concern to me. I do agree that people put a lot of inappropriate things on myspace but you can accidently come across it on the internet or even see some inappropriate things on tv. I think it just comes down to if a parent can trust their child or not.
