Kids without costumes??

Halloween is next week and I was wondering what you all do when a child/kid knocks on your door trick treating without a costume?

Over the last 2 years in my neighborhood there are more and more kids knocking on the door saying trick or treat and have no costumes on at all. A few have maybe just makeup on their face with regular clothing on and some don't bother with any makeup and come out just as they look everyday. These kids are the ages of 10 to 15 years old.

Now I don't think that's what trick or treating is about but that's just me

What do you do or how would you handle it or would you just give them the candy ?

I give them candy. I get 10 to 12 kids a year without costumes also. I do not think there is a rule that you must dress up. I do not know thier families financial situation, even though I live in a neighborhood where I would not think it would be a problem I know sometimes there is. My daughter has a friend who is 17 and lives in a 500,000 house and there is no food in the cubboards. Alot of bad money choices and they are on the verge of being homeless. But anyway I do not say anything just give them candy. Also if you dont and the age they are, I would be afraid something might happen to my cars or house.

DD has went trick or treating the last two years without a costume. However, she does wear a Halloween t-shirt of some sort. This will probably be the last year for her to go door to door.

Initially I would think that they couldn't afford a costume. Or they may had decided not to trick or treat then at the last minute they or their parents changed their mind and said they could go. They couldn't find a costume in their size. They spilled something on their costume at the last minute and couldn't wear it. Parents refused to buy them one. There could be a million reasons. I give out candy to anyone who comes to the door, including non-costumed teenagers.

I make them earn their candy if they don't have a costume. I ask what they're dressed up as, and when they say "a teenager" or something along those lines I reply that I had to take time to go buy the candy so if they want some I need a joke or a dance or a song or SOMETHING. Most of the time they look at me like I'm crazy and then will do something silly for the candy.

I always do this with a laugh and smile so that I don't get tricked later.

Some states and cities/counties have laws concerning the ages a person can dress-up to trick-or-treating door to door.

We do not give out candy or go trick-or-treating.
I was only pointing out a reason as to why so older children may not be dressed up in a mask.
I don't think most would call the police.most would .probably just give them candy anyway.

I think there is a age limit here but no one pays any attention to it.

we haven't had this problem. The older kids dress up around here. If they don't dress up I suppose I wouldn't give them candy. The exception is when it's cold out (we've had a rainstorm and snowstorm on different years), most kids are just bundled up in costs so everyone gets candy

We get teens here but that's because I have a 16 yr old dd. Her friends show up to TOT and I always give them a couple pieces each. The younger ones get more.

Of curse I give them candy. that is what halloween is for, right? I tell them "gee, what are you supposed to be?" and they giggle and say "a bumb" or soemthing. Only if they are older. Maybe they can't afford a costume.

No costume - gets one of those mini candy bars. A costume - gets 3-4 mini candy bars.

Even if you don't have money, you can make something up. Wear a box and go as a washing machine - I don't care what it is as long as there's a little bit of effort.

We give candy to anyone who knocks on the door......

We have a lot of teens who don't dress up, but walk brothers or sisters door to door...

Everyone gets candy from us! Costume or not!

I have always thought maybe their parents said they are too old to go, but they still wanted to. get some treats.

I do think the teen moms with babies and toddlers that have their own treat bag are a little over the top. But I give the candy anyhow!

My kids are those kids with very little costumes, our school does not support halloween in anyway
the town halloween night has a small costume parade but thats it, so I dont spend my money on
costumes for 3 hours of trick or treat, if they want to go they put some makeup on and find something
in their wardobe or sallys to wear, granted my kids are teens but even small I really didnt buy
costumes.

I give candy to anyone that comes to the door. The kids without the costumes are usually older teens and I would not want them to come back and do something to my house because they didn't get candy. Last year out of the 100 or so kids only a handfull didn't have costumes.

Well dh has always worked nights so I always take the kids trick or treating so we dont pass out candy but along time ago when I lived with my mom I always passed out candy & I always gave to whoever came to the door. Where we are you have to wear your snowsuit usually over your costume so it can be hard to tell whos actually dressed up

Nobody ever comes to my house (out in the country) but I know that my MIL gives the "good" candy to the little kids in costumes. It is usually the older kids/teenagers without the costumes and she gives them something but nothing like the little ones get.

We will easily get over 200 kids. We don't have 200 kids in our neighborhood. I have no idea where these kids come from. Everyone gets candy though -- at least until I run out.

You are only a kid once. The teens like the candy and the fun atmosphere too. What does it hurt? Most of the parents eat the little kids candy anyway. At least the teens are doing something that is fun and doesn't hurt anyone.

I don't care if they have a costume on or not. I do NOT like it when they don't bother to say thank you however. :-)
