I don't get this one, never have, but my doctor was telling me that this promotes osteoperosis. He has seen women as young as late twenties that had been getting the shots for a while, with osteoperosis. SCARY!!!

I don't know about the osteoperosis--but, when I went this week for my "yearly", the doctor said she wouldn't/couldn't prescribe it for me because the Depo tends to exaggerate/exacerbate depression. I currently take an anti-depressant. I can't imagine knowingly taking a medication that would cause me to be more depressed....

I really really wanted it 13yrs ago when I had my oldest I thought it would be easier than remembering a pill everyday but at that time it was pretty new & the side effects didnt sound good so my mom talked me out of it but I kinda wish I would have taken it anyways it would be alot easier than remembering a pill everyday I just eventually got my tubes tied because I was always screwing up the pill

Yes i get the depo shot. I did soon after giving birth to my 4th child and haven't had really any side affects. Side affects are just that where it can affect people and some it won't. That is with any birth control that you take. The only safe birth control is abstinence and with my history of getting pregnant the one time we do it i needed something really affective. My obgyn sat with me for an hour prior to getting the shot and we both felt this was the best one for the time being, but that to consider the merena which i may consider, but kinda scared where it can shift out of place. I get pregnant way to easy and i really wanted something to where i won't ever get pregnant again. I am considering getting my tubes not only tied, but cortirised and cut, but kinda scared about that too. I take a multivitiamin and he said i should be ok as long as i don't take it long long term.

I would really encourage people to see out forums like the one I posted above too see what "real people" are going thru after Depo before they decide to do it. The risks are huge and not worth it IMO

long term is like 2 + yrs. He told me that he doesn't like his patients taking it longer then 2 yrs. He suggested it to me that he would like me to consider the merena at my next visit which would be in jan. I am aware of the side affects and my obgyn and i both felt it was best for me at this time. I trust his decision and with every birth control their is risks you take unless you choose not to have a sexual relation ever again. I much rather go through the side affects then have another pregnancy.

I've been on it since 3yrs ago. I do take a calcium supplement. I love it, and it works for me.

I took Depo for 8 years. I have been off of it for 5 years now. I gained about 45 lbs while on it. I went off of it to see if it was what caused my weight gain. My ob/gyn said if it was the cause then I would lose the weight fairly fast. I have lost 26 lbs this year. I don't know if the Depo was what caused the weight gain tho I started coughing about 10 yrs ago and every dr i went to told me i had allergies. They would give me a nasal spray and that was that. It had consistenly gotten worse each year until lat year I changed dr.s and was referred to a lung specialist. I have been diagnosed with allergic asthma. So Idon't know if it was the depo shot or the ashtma that has put the weight on me. I do know that I won't take the shot any longer but only because my dr has said I don't need to take any extra hormones into my body now. I took it mainly because I can't take the pill, it makes me very queasy. |

Same here! Plus I had MAJOR mood swings! We decided, after our 3rd child, that DH would get the big V. That way I didn't have to worry about going back on birth control. No way would I , personally, take Depo again.

I was on depo for years without any problems. I did gain about 20 lbs. but I also became a SAHM the same time I started depo. When I started working again I dropped all the weight in 3 months. Now I have an IUD but am ready for something a bit more permanent. Once the adoption of our little girl goes through DH or I (or both) will get fixed. I am happy with our 3 kids and do not feel the need to have any more.

I've been on depo for 11 1/2 (years now with no major side effects. Yes that is Eleven and a half years. I probably gained a few pounds, but then I'm often nearly bedridden with other problems so that will do it also. I don't blame the shot, I blame me putting food in my mouth. Although it does tend to give me food cravings for 2 weeks after I get the shot - fixed that easily enough. I get acupuncture to reduce the cravings and frankly I give in and have a small piece of whatever it is I want. By using food logs I proved to myself that I consumed more calories trying not to have the whatever, then by having it. I do take a calcium supplement, and when I get health insurance again I'll get a bone scan. I haven't been depressed, or had mood swings or anything else. As with all drugs, your milage will vary. For me the risks of the drug are completely outweighed by the absolute imperitive that I not get pregnant. In a few more years they'll likely just cut everything out and toss me on the hormones but if I can put it off a bit longer it would be nice.

I have noticed that i am having mood swings quite a lot lately. I chalked it up at first to just being moody cause of kids ect. I now realize after reading this thread and the board about depo that it is possible its from the shot. I never had this frequent mood swings before and now im having them more frequent. In jan im defidently switching to something else. I don't like how it has changed me personally.

I took the depo shot for birth control after I had my son in 1996 for about 5 years. Then I switched to the pill (to get my cycle back) and then DH got a vasectomy. I don't see any ill effects from the shot. I loved it!! In the beginning I had "surprise" cycles, and then eventually nothing. |
