Exclamation Desperate...

Need ideas.
Hubby been sick off and on for 2 months. It comes and goes. HOWEVER, these symptoms have been ongoing CONSTANTLY for 2 weeks. Went to doctor on Thurs and blood work and xrays said nothing was wrong. But since Friday, his joints are hurting, hurting to the point he can't move. And since yesterday, it has gotten worse. So, if he doesn't get better or gets worse we are going to the ER, but until then I would like to know if anyone has ANY idea as to what this could be. Here's what's been going on:

2 months ago, started with 'cold' like symptoms, would last a couple days and then dissappear, then flare back up.

Now, the last two weeks he has been progressively getting worse and has additional symptoms....
Headache, FEVER, severe joint pain.

Since Friday, the pain has become so bad, he can't move without screaming in pain.

Here's the tests that were done at doctors visit on Thurs:
Mono - negative
Flue - negative
CBC - was told was normal
Pnuemonia - negative

Please throw out any suggestions you can think of.

PRIOR to this bout, he is a healthy 35 yr old man. His father does have Lupus (which worries me). Mom is healthy. Siblings all healthy.

I appreciate any suggestions..... and prayers are welcome too!
Thank you.

first thing that came to mind was Rheumatoid Arthritis. Do you notice any joint swelling?

so far

He does have joint swelling with the pain.

But would Rhuematoid Arth. Happen all of a sudden?

I did see that on every site I have checked, but I just didn't think it would strike so suddenly...

My first thought was Lyme also. Hate to throw this in the ring, but Lupus also comes to mind. There are infections which will settle in the joints, though I can't remember specifics as it was something my mother experienced years ago.

I hope the doctors find the answer quickly, and he begins to recover.

Yes.

My husband was diagnosed at 29. His Mom thinks by tests run on her years ago, that she is a carrier.

Does he have problems straightening his fingers all the way out? Does he have a small nodule in the palm of his hands?

My husband had those symptoms as well as some of the others you mentioned.

See if he can get tested for arthritis, or at least approach that line of thought with his doctor.

Before I even got to the line about your DH's dad having Lupus, I was already thinking Lupus. Does his dr. know his dad has Lupus??

I was wondering this as well. I believe the flareup of Lupus has been linked to a genetic predisposition.

I verbally told the doc and all she did was shake her head yes...... So, I am really not sure if she 'really' took that into consideration.

You are correct, Lupus is genetic......

His dad has a horrible case of Lupus.

So, could it be lupus WITHOUT a rash? He doesn't have one that I can find anywhere....

Unfortunately, yes it can come up on a person all of a sudden. My niece, @ 18 months old was fine one day the next both her knees were swollen, the joints on two fingers. Her knees and finger joints were red, hot and swollen. Took about 6 months until a Dr. at Arkansas Children's Hospital gave a diagnosis. Then she developed aspirin poisoning (this was before the advent of all the good arthritis meds). She suffered with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis for about 3 years, and then she had stomach ailments from all the meds she had to take. She'll be 22 this year and has not had a flare in a long time.

Here are a couple blood tests he needs: Sed rate, and rheumatoid factor. Then the Drs. may also suggest a SPECT bone scan.

I also hate to say, but has the Dr. given any consideration for cancer?

My first thought was also Lymes, but I don't know a thing about Lupus. Make them listen, if you aren't happy with what they are doing go back, be a pain in the backside. They specifically have to test for Lymes I believe. Good luck and keep us posted on any other symptoms.

Sorry to hear DH is going thru this. We will keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

I know this may sound far fetched but these also sound like symptoms my father had before they FINALLY discovered it was his kidneys and he had to have a kidney transplant. He has polysistic kidney disease and his creataine (sp?) level was way off and other things that should have directed the Dr's to his kidneys dailing but for over a yr they thought it was his blood pressure and several other things before they finally diagnosed him. He would double up in pain and his joints and fingers were swollen and he could barely open his hands. He had horrible headaches and pains.

I pray this is not it but I thought I would throw it out there as you never know. Remember you are your best advocate. If you want a test done make sure and ask the Dr for it. and make sure he/she follows thru I had to do this for my youngest son when the Dr's wouldn't listen to me. Thankfully one of my good friends is a Pediatrician and she told me the tests to ask for as she DID listen and my friend was correct.

I hope it is just a bad flu and he is well very soon.

Blessings,

Jenn

I thought lupus, as well. I have a good friend who spoke at an event about lupus the other day, and I was able to hear her. What you are describing sounds much like her symptoms. She did not mention a rash. Her joint pain jumped from joint to joint. She went five years without being diagnosed and it was miserable. Her treatment was very aggressive (they gave her chemo), but now she lives a relatively stable life. She just can't over-do. She hasn't had a major flare in a number of years.

My MIL has Fibromyalgia and has alot of the symptoms you listed. It was like one day she was okay, and the next day she was in agonizing pain in her joints, and her feet, and hands were swollen. Very odd! I sure hope you get it figured out. Please keep us posted.

My family has chronic Lyme disease. We had been ill and untreated/undiagnosed for many years before our diagnosis.

One of the symptoms with Lyme for my son is migrating joint pain. My DS would have severe pain in his right knee. Later, the pain would be in the left ankle. The pain would move from joint to joint.

Has your husband been tested for Lyme disease? Have you seen any ticks? Ticks can carry many other diseases.

I hope your DH finds an answer soon.

Peggy

Your entire family has chronic Lyme disease? How many of you are there with Lyme disease? All of you were bitten by ticks?

I was gonna ask the same thing. We have had two cases in our family; which I think is very unusual but given the amount of time we spend in CT, I guess not that strange to have two tick bite incidents. The first one was treated before it had any lingering effects and we definitely knew what it was the second time, so it was also caught early. How does a family get chronic lyme disease??

OP - I hope that you and your DH get a diagnosis soon....and morevoer that he gets better real soon!

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 7 years ago after surgery for a ruptured disk in my neck. The symptoms you're giving sound very similiar to FM. It's VERY painful and you go thru flare-ups, flu-like symptoms, exhaustion, headaches, etc.. Here's a website that might help you:

Fibromyalgia Information - FibroHope.org

It was very frustrating for me going to doctors and describing my pain and symptoms. My orthopedic doctor sensed what he thought was wrong and sent me to a very good rheumatologist who diagnosed the FM.

This is off of WebMD on Lupus.
Although people with the disease may have many different symptoms, some of the most common ones include extreme fatigue, painful or swollen joints (arthritis), unexplained fever, skin rashes, and kidney problems.
My mother has lupus and so does my grandpa, that's what this sounds like. I wouldn't go back to that Dr. if I were you, I would go to a Rhumatologist(sp?) who specializes in this kind of stuff, it looks like it's out of your dr.s range.
Good luck

I was listening tonight to the news and they were talking about staph infections. A lot of the symptoms you have listed were mentioned. They said it is extreme when it gets in the bloodstream. MRSA was metioned also, does he have any cuts or has he been exposed to staph?

I have had 2 kidney infections in the past year that have come on out of the blue and one minute I'm up, fine and then all of a sudden I'm in so much pain I can't literally walk. Was he tested for that? Both times (the first one I didn't know what it was either--went to two drs. and one specalist for my back) and was in bed for 2 months because they couldn't figure it out (my gynocologist finally got it). Worst pain I've ever been in I could not even move without the feeling of dying it was that bad.

Whatever, take him to another dr. Have you tried the emergency room yet? Expensive I know but sometimes they seem to be more in the know. Keep us updated! I hope your DH gets better quickly. How miserable for him.

Update

Well, we officially have a diagnosis, although it is not a good one.

He tested positive for Mixed Connective Tissue Disease

It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body. It is an overlapping condition from lupus, schladerma, rhuematoid arthritis, and a p word. From what I have researched, the outcome does not look favorable.

I do appreciate all of the responses, the prayers, and thoughts. I hope that all will continue to pray for my husband. I have cried for two days straight. Thank you and I will try to keep everyone informed.

Thanks again

But I'm sorry about the diagnosis.
