How old was your child when you let him/her...

Blow dry their hair themselves? (I had a blow dryer catch fire when I was maybe 12 so I'm a little leery )

How about going to the next isle at the grocery store or Walmart/Kmart?

I guess I'm a little over-protective. My DD is 7 and I don't let her out of my sight in public. But I see SO many kids my DDs age and younger running around without parents .

I know we've talked about how old the kids are when we first left them at home...but what about everything else?

Blow dry their own hair around 9 or 10. I would help if they needed it because of long or thick hair.
Next aisle at the store...actually depended on the store strange enough, but probably around 10 or 11. They are now almost 14 and 13 and roam the store while I am there.

My DDs are 9 & 10 and we hardly ever blow dry their hair. They take showers in the evening and just let their hair air dry. DS5 doesn't have enough to dry!!

As far as the shopping thing. When we are at our local Walmart I will let the girls go to the toy aisles if I'm shopping in that area. My DS thinks he should be able to go too, but I don't think so. I do think sometimes things come sooner for him since I've mellowed with the girls, but I don't trust him alone in a big store yet!!

I do let him go bike riding with boys from the neighborhood already and I would have never let the girls do that at 5 years old. We live in a neighborhood about 1.5 miles outside the city limits of our town and basically the only people driving through are people who live there or are visiting someone. In other words, it's not a way to get to any other part of town or anything, so there isn't any traffic. Anyway, boys come over to our house and play and then they will ride on to someone else's house to play and so on. It still sometimes bugs me, but we know all of our neighbors and I know the kids he's with, so I guess I'm ok with it. What I worry the most about is him getting hurt. When he came home on Saturday he said that he learned how to do a wheelie on a skateboard. I guess I'm afraid the older boys will teach him things and he'll end up getting hurt. My DH assures me that he's a boy and he will get hurt, but he'll be fine. I suppose , but I still worry!

My oldest DD is 12 and still won't blow her own hair dry.....not because she's not allowed but because when she does she looks like a big frizz ball......not a pretty sight I first let her try around 9.......but I was right there......

Even at 12 I'm just know starting to let her run to the next aisle......I'm overprotective and I know it.....but my parents were super strict so compared to them I'm really quit easy going
