Is anyone familiar with Second Life (computer game)?

My mom is afraid that my adult brother is becoming too involved/obsessed with this computer game. She is afraid that he is turning this fantasy world into his reality.

Does anyone have any experience with this game?

I think this is similar to The Sims. I don't think he could get into trouble with it. But he could become addicted to it and his little world.

I hadn't even heard of this until I watched the last episode of CSI:NY. It was featured in the show....I know that's not any help...sorry

If she's really worried maybe she can talk to somebody, more and more people seem to be having issues with video/computer game addictions.....

There is adult content in the game, just FYI.

Players can create items and clothing. This includes .... anatomy, for lack of a better word. I was in a dance club of some sort and some guy was walking around nude with an ... what can you say on this board?? (I didn't try making a male character but I'd imagine they are made like Ken dolls).

There are "pose balls" that make your character perform adult acts. Or dance and other non-adult type things, but just saying these things exist.

Keep in mind, I did not go looking for these things, so I'd hate to think of what else there is in this game! I was just walking around exploring! My son always wanted to move my character around, pull out the items I had (helicopter and so on) and create stuff but I was sitting right here making sure he didn't click on beds and stuff.

It seems like a mostly social game to me, I didn't see any kind of questing or other objectives, just a lot of advertising and groups to join that might throw parties sometimes.

HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!!!!!!!!! Watch out. DH started w/ Everquest a few years ago. After I threw him out when he withdrew from the world for 2 years, he stopped, but when I got sick he slowly started back again, w/ Second Life...day and night. Yes, there are adult themes..he owned a strip club..now it's World of Warcraft, which is just as bad as Everquest..so here we go again...

It's a very serious addictioin, and families are divorcing over this type of thing more and more.

Very Addictive!!!!!!!!!!

I am VERY familiar with that game....my friend got me into it 2 years ago and there has not been a day in those 2 years I never went on...I have been caught with other guys...(I am married)....He swore up and down that I was addicted to that game and I always denied it....my husband finally agreed that I could stay on as long he created an avatar and I was partnered with him and stated in my profile I am taken...and he occasssionally goes on to check on what I am doing threw his avatar...I mainly went on to hang with my real life friends and get away from the real world for awhile...well now I am in therapy for it and trying to break the ADDICTION...and I was spending thousands of dollars a month on this game as well...so that put us in debt....

I know this post sounds bad but I was having marital problems then when I started it...and basically fell right into the addiction trap and was looking for a companion someone to tell me all the things I really wanted to hear from my husband and things I wanted to do with my husband....now we are both trying to work on our relationship and limited to 1 hour a day on the game..(I used to be on it 12 or more straight hours a day)...I know people have gotten divorced from this and I really dont want that to happen to me...I love my husband and I want it to work out....

Thank you for letting me share...
Catherine

I don't play MMORPG's because I've seen too many people spent way too much time with them, and I don't want to hang out with people who are so shy they need to get their social interaction online. I'm writing this as someone who spends too much time with nerds, so I've seen some of the more serious gamers. It's REALLY easy to spend ages playing video games, especially when you're interacting with people who encourage you to stay a bit longer. As in, you need to get online at a certain time to meet up with various people, stay to do something else, and end up staying on all night.

I actually banned World of Warcraft from our house, which upset my husband, until he met some very dedicated players, and decided he didn't want to be like them. I'm not sure that Second Life is much different, except it's a bit more sexually oriented, and it can be free, so it's easier to get started with.

Same here, never heard of it until I saw it on CSI NY. I'm really not into video games at all though, so I know nothing about it other than what I saw on the show.
