What should I do?? Not home for Halloween.

My Dh is working during the candy pass out time on Haloween, so I have take the kids out myself. I still want to contribute to the fun, and pass out some candy.
Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do?

I was thinking of just putting some camdy in a bowl on the porch. Does this work? Should I just not give any out?

In the past when we have not been home, I have made little Halloween Bags with candy and set it out on my porch in a big bowl that said "Please take one". I have not set out all the candy, I left some for when we would be home to give out.

Some of my neighbors when they are not home, just leave the lights off inside and outside of their house.

DH is usually not home either, so what we do is I take my candy stash to the my neighbors (also my best friend) and her son walks around with me and my kids and she hands out the candy, then once we are done, I finish passing out the rest......

We tried the bowl on the porch just once, and we had a child dump the whole bowl, and while we were trick or treating he was telling us about the "dumb" people that left a whole bowl on their porch......

Yikes!
I wont set a bowl out either. Some people are nice, some are just greedy and inconsiderate. (see the raincheck thread)

I plan to put a sign on the door and turn out the lights.
If they don't take that hint, guess they'll be standing at the door ringing all night....

I had this happen one year, too. My hubby had to work late that night, so I just gave our candy to my neighbor next door, who gave it out for us. The kids got a 2 for 1 at her house. When we got back, I gave out the rest of the candy at my house.

Wow.... we always leave a HUGE bowl out and it's always all gone when we get home (but our neighborhood has a ton of kids).... I haven't bought the candy yet this year (was headed over to TRU soon), but I guess we'll just turn out the lights this year. I'd hate to think that I spent all that money and one kid got it all! Maybe I'll just take some candy over to my neighbors house, too.

I'm giving our bowl of candy to our neighbors and they will be handing out our candy for us, along with their candy. In our neighborhood - which is small, just 83 homes - all the neighbors sit outside at the end of their driveways w/ candy for TOT'ing. So the kids just walk around our subdivision (we have one entrance in and out, and our one road is a big oval, that's it) and it makes the TOT'ing go very fast, since they get the candy at the end of the drive! It's a very fun atmosphere.

I've always left out a big bowl of candy and usually have some left when I get home.

at our old house my neighbor gave me his candy since he wouldn't be home. he turned off his lights but for those who went to his door, he left a sign saying "candy next door" with an arrow pointing towards my house. i think i'd do something like that before just leaving treats outside my door.

Take a wagon along with you and put a cauldron in it. Pass out candy from your cauldron to the kids along the way.

I tried the "leave a big bowl with a sign on it" one year, and it, too, was attacked and empty when we got home. Spoke with a neighbor who said her kids came over just shortly after we left to TOT and it was already empty. I gave people the benefit of the doubt and got educated that night.

I guess we've been lucky...When the kids were small, DH was traveling alot and I was often in this situation...When I was out with the kids trick or treating, I always left a big bowl of candy on a chair on our front porch with a sign "Please Take One"...I never had a problem with someone taking it all... ~Lisa
