Question about ear aches UPDATE!

My DD has been complaining about her ears hurting. We took her to the Dr. this past Monday. She has no ear infection, no infection anywhere, but she has some sinus drainage down the back of her throat.

Well her ears still hurt. She is almost done with the medicine the Dr. gave her to clear up the drainage.

I called the ENT today, but we can't get her in there till the 13th. So I called our family Dr. She can go to him on Monday. (she saw her pediatrician this week).

I am not one of those parents that take my kids to the Dr. at every little thing. Plus DH is a pharmacist, so we can pretty much fend stuff off. He doesn't like giving them a lot of prescription meds.

Anyway, to my Question. Does anyone know what could be causing her ears to hurt?

No fever, she feels fine, laughing and playing, but says that they still hurt. One more ear than the other.

TIA
Christina

UPDATE!!!

We went back to the dr yesterday. She has Eustachian tube dysfunction and her left sinus cavity is infected. He told me to keep the Apt. with the ENT encase she does not improve this week on the meds he prescribed.

It's good to finally know what has been bothering her all this time. He also said that the reason the other dr. didn't see it was it was probably just developing and there was no sign of an infection. She just has some drainage.

Could it be seasonal allergies?? Both my DS's have them, complete with the post-nasal drip. My 5 year old DS complains about his ears too. Our solution is to use a prescription nasal allergy spray such as Rhinecort or Nasonex. It usually takes 3-4 days to take effect-- and Wow, what a difference!!! After using one for 6-12 months they sometimes lose their affectiveness-- we just change brands and we're fine.
Hope this helps!!

She doesn't happen to have TMJ or grind her teeth when she is sleeping? I have TMJ and get severe earaches occasionally, my physician thinks it has something to do with the TMJ and my semicircular canals having a blockage or something? I have yet to make an appointment with the specialist because it isn't flaring up much anymore, but it's maybe worth checking into.

P.S. My DH is a pharmacist too and feels the same way as your DH about meds.

It quite likely could be fluid behind the ear drum. I used to have that problem and it generally kicked in about this time of year.
I was told by my family dr. and an ent also that I should take an antihistimine.
I was also told by another dr. at the after care center that I needed tubes in my ears. (can you believe that. A grandma needing tubes in ears)

I would say try an otc antihistimine for a few days to see if that offers any relief.

I cannot help you with the cause but I know a lot about how to get rid of ear aches (DS used to get them ALL THE TIME). Finally we found something that worked: freshly squeezed lemon juice, wormed up. The kid lays so the ear points up and you put about a tsp of warm juice in their ear. Drain the ear after 1-2 minutes. The ear ache is usually gone within a few minutes. Good luck!

It is so funny that you mentioned TMJ! I have that. So bad that I have the custom bit (Can't remember the technical term) that I wear at night.

I don't notice her grinding her teeth, but I will check on her here in a little bit and see if I hear anything.

If I didn't mention it before, She is going to be 8 in Dec. If that helps anything.

She has also had two teeth pulled and two cut out for overcrowding, (not anything recently though) and will get braces in the summer.

My Mom has Severe TMJ and has to wear the splint at night, and has many headaches and earaches due to it, and our dentist, said it can be hereditary...don't know if that true or not, buts its why I had braces on already straight teeth as a kid, and now have permanent braces on the back of teeth now....Might want to check that angle......but with that said I know with my allergies, and the kids allergies when we have the sinus drainage we all tend to get ear aches.....I really hope she feels better soon!

You might ask if they will check her for fluid. With all the drainage it sounds possible. They can't always see fluid visually and it can cause just as much trouble and pain as an infection. I hope she feels better soon!!

Well she said they are still bothering her.

She takes an antihistamine daily this time of year. I figure if they are bothering her more over the weekend, we will take her to urgent care. If they stay the same we will wait and see the Dr. on Monday.

As a young adult who had just moved to a new city, I had a bad ear ache in both ears. I did not go to the doctor until I was really in pain. As a result, I have scarring in my ears and I do have some hearing loss.

About 5 years later I ended up getting tubes in my ears. After the tubes came out, the holes were supposed to heal over, but one of mine didn't, so I have a hole in my ear drum too.

Don't mess around with ears!! Keep taking her to the doctor until they find out what is going on. I sure wish I had done that.

Almost every time my daughter is sick I take her to Dr to early for anything to show up. Needless to say we are usually back in a few days later and sure enough she has some sort of infection. It could be it just wasn't obvious when you took her in and she may actually have an ear infection. I just had one 2 weeks ago and the side of my face down the jawline hurt to touch. I would take her back in soon.
