Family Tree Research

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to research ancestors without having to pay? I am wanting to do a little research on my mom's side of the family.

Thanks!

You absolutely need to go to a Mormon Genealogy site such as FamilySearch. You don't have to be a Mormon to use the site. I don't know why, but they are the experts.

Family birth and death certificates, cemetery monuments, funeral home records are all free and be sure to talk now to any surviving family members and get them reminiscing. If you have old family photos, be sure to look on the back, sometimes they are named and the comments can be very enlightening. If you are in the old neighborhood, talk to the neighbors as well.

If you know what state/county/town she was from originally you can go to or call their historical society and they have a TON of information. My Dad was the president of our county's and they would copy every death notice and file it under the name in the files, anything relevant is there and they love to talk about old family relations. They might charge a photo copy fee though, just a few cents a page. The hall of records is another place, but that can be tough.

ETA an old family member, the older the better would know a lot, I know a lot was lost with my dad that I wish I had paid attention to.

Good luck, it is fun to know where you came from, luckily Dad did all of my work for me.

I don't have to do any research as it's all been done by other family relatives.

However, I work in a library and I know our library has tons of resources for people doing geneology. They even have a group that meets once a month or so. I know our computer system there has special geneology researching things on it, and we have microfish for old newspapers. People often order microfish from other states through our library. I would really suggest asking at the reference desk at your library. They probably have books too, to help get you started.

As I said before though, I personally haven't used it, but I know that is a popular subject for many of our patrons. I just work in a different department so I don't know exactly what to tell you to do. I'll bet your library has resources that you don't know about.
