| What happens when teachers strike?
The teachers are still working without a contract this year. They filed an intent to strike last Thursday, so they are eligible to strike on this coming Tuesday (I guess they have to give 10 days notice). If the teachers union does strike, what exactly happens? Do they still have school? I was told by one person that they would try to get subs and retired teachers in to teach - but then the kids' teachers would be outside picketing? That doesn't sound very good? I guess the other question - and I'm sure I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm curious - if they do strike and can't find enough teachers to run the district, does the school year get extended into the summer? They have to go a certain number of days, right? I'm praying they don't strike, but from what I hear it's not sounding good, so I was just wondering what some of the possibilities were? I want to be somewhat prepared if it would happen. |

Before I got into the Mid-Del school system in Oklahoma and was still working on my education degree, the teachers went on strike in support of House Bill 1017 that reduced class size. School was still held; they used subs for the time that teachers were out. A lot of people, however, kept their children home. The result...the bill passed!!!!!!

| I think nearly all school systems have a minimum number of days to attend; the ones I've had experience with (as a teacher and a parent) is 180 days. If, system-wide, you miss more days than you have inclement weather, whatever, days, those are made up at the discretion of the school board. They may be during the summer or we've even had them taken off of long breaks like Easter. We'll hope for a quick, fair resolution so no education time is lost. |
