Advice on vacuum cleaners

I hope this post is ok in the Cafe. We are in the market for a new vacuum. Other than Dyson, which one do you think will work well? It has to be a bag one (not bagless) and we also recently got a dog (which luckily doesn't shed but will still have some hair out occassionally). And also not terribly expensive, maybe in the $200 ballpark.

TIA!!

I love my HOOVER. Just make sure that it was made in the USA. I know that the company just sold to the same owner that owns Bissel, I think. And they are trying to take more jobs overseas. I do know that Hoover still has a plant in Texas. It beats, as it sweeps, as it cleans

I have a Kirby, bought it on Ebay for $300 or so, a few years ago. I wouldn't mind trying a Dyson but I don't think mine is going to die anytime soon...

I know you said not dyson but it's honestly, hands down, the best vac I have ever had, especially if you have pets.

I have a Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled with a bag and I LOVE it. I wound up getting it for around 150.00 (this was really, really, really a good deal) at Kohl's. It was on sale with a bunch of coupons and stuff and it was originally near 300.xx. I love this vacuum and cannot believe how much it pulls out of the carpet. I have two dogs, one Great Dane that sheds terribly, and this vacuum is fantastic.

The only downside to the vacuum is that it is a little heavy when I drag it up and down a couple of flights of stairs. Other than that the self-propelled mechanism makes quick work of the vacuuming job.

I do like my Hoover WindTunnel. We have had it over 5 years, and it is starting to show its "age". The self propel button is very hard to switch, and it self propels in reverse, even when you don't have it on self-propel. It really does suck up a lot of stuff, tho. I made mention of its' "woes" to DH, and I have a terrible feeling he is getting me a Dyson for XMAS. I HATE to spend that much on a vacuum. We also have a Kirby, and it works great, too, just very heavy and it isn't easy to get the hose off to quickly do the crevices and stuff like that.

If I do get a new vacuum, I will look at the Hoover Wind Tunnel again.

I know you said 200.00 range and mine isn't, but I was up all night one night last year, and watched the Oreck infomercial. Knowing my sister had hers for over 10 years and loved it. Plus we were getting all laminate floors and wanted a vacuum that was light and wouldn't scratch dragging it all over the floor. So I got suckered in by the Oreck Titanium model. We have three labs, big time shedders, and two cats. I also wanted a bag vacuum as I really have hated my bagless ones. Let me say, this vacuum rocks! It has amazing suction, handles all the dog hair, picks up the hair from my yellow lab great on my darker area carpets. It is light, easy to maneuver, is great to wing around the floors, the kitchen and everything. Plus it came w/ a free canister type that is SUPER for stairs and stuff, and I got an Oreck free cordless iron. I guess not really free as the vacuum was almost 800. but is was sooo worth it, in my opinion.

OP, is here a reason you prefer a vacuum cleaner with bags?

Well, we have never had a bagless one and from what I read from different reviews etc., when emptying out a canister, all the dust comes out everywhere and makes a big mess, even when doing it outside the house.

People with allergies like the bags to contain the dirt and dust.
