Back Problems? Anyone else?

I have been having "back problems" for about 7 or 8 yrs now that I think about it. Basically I can be sitting, standing, driving, anything when it happens. I get an incredibly painful (I describe it as paralyzing) pain that is in the lower portion of my back. Years ago it used to last for at least a few minutes where I would be confined to the couch, floor, any place I can manage to get to that I would not have to move. After about 30 mins I could finally move, and it was over like that. No pain after, not sore, nothing. Now that same thing happens, except the pain is much more excrutiating however it lasts for only seconds. It doesn't seem to be brought on by anything like stress, physical exhertion, certain movements anything at all. I started keeping a log of when, and how they happened so I could try to see if there was anything relational but there wasn't. When I told my dr about it, he kinda blew me off..with the expectation that we all have aches and pains expecially back pains, but these literally make me feel paralyzed when they happen. Anyone else experienced anything similiar? I'm wondering if it's some sort of disc problem or something? It happens at work, and since I just got into a new position, I am dreading the day when I have an episode and have to explain what happened.

Kidney stones? I think I had a gallbladder attack while pregnant once that seemed lower in my back too. My husband has problems with kidney stones and the first time, he said he fell on the floor and thought he was going to die. Really annoyed at me when I drove the speed limit (35mph or so) to the hospital.

you need to be evaluated by an orthopedist. They may refer you to a neurologist/neurosurgeon for some nerve studies. It may be nothing, but I would suggest you get it checked out.

Don't think it's a kidney stone.

I have back problems, some days worse than others, I have a herniated disk in my lower back that pinched a nerve causing numbness/pain in my left leg. I am in pain most days unless I have had steroid injections in my spine. I have a tens unit for pain, went through physical therapy, which helped a little. I do not take pain medication, just ibuprofen. I do take medication for the nerve damage. I see a neurologist and had to get an MRI and some other test (can't remember the name off hand, but they stick needles in you to see how much nerve damage there is). Good luck with your back.

I use to have this happen to me for years. It came when all my immune disorders came and also left when my immune disorders left.To this day I still don't know what caused either but glad they are both gone.Hopefully yours will just go away too. It took about 10 years for my back problem which was the same exact thing your describing ,to go away.
I did start taking taking birthcontrol and Spirotone at the time they went away so maybe it had something to do with a hormone imbalace for me.Who knows.

DO NOT see a chiro until you have had some diagnostics to determine if you have a disc issue, or nerve damage. A chiro cannot cure a blown or protruding disc (contrary to what some will tell you), nor can they cure nerve damage. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE--get a diagnosis from a MEDICAL DOCTOR or at the very least get cleared by a medical doctor before allowing a chiro to "adjust" your back.

My chiropractor is also a nerologist. He has taken xrays, sent me for MRIs,and keeps in contact with my PC and my rhuemotologist. If not for him,I would not be able to turn my head, and would be in terrible back and shoulder pain.As I have been to two chiropractors, one who had all of those tests done before treating me,and the first took many x rays.I assumed that it was something they all do before treating anyone.
I left the first chiro because he does not like his patients to see conventional drs,or take meds for anything.
