Back in 2000 I attended a conference and got to see Mr. Yang speak. Yahoo was riding high. In 2006, I was in Shanghai and got to see the CEO of Alibaba speak at another conference. Jack Ma is very passionate about the good his company is doing for China. He's a great speaker. China is an exciting place to do business. The growth is amazing and the poverty astounding. I can remember watching the events of 89 and I will never forget that lone student staring down a tank.
Yahoo's actions that resulted in Shi Tao being sent to a Chinese prison for 10 years... a decade are just horrid. Horrid. If they seek to placate the despots in China fine. They can have their money. They won't be getting mine.
If you like to read, and are interested in learning about China. I can't recommend enough two books:
Wild Swans -- by Jung Chang. I just convinced my wife to read it and she could not put it down. It is a great read and provides a wealth of incite into China.
Mao: The Unknown Story by Jung Chang and her husband Jon Halliday although the reviews are mixed. I found the book to be an engrossing read.
