What's your thermostat set on in the winter?

DH and I have been talking about getting one of those new outdoor wood burning furnaces. I freeze him out, I like it a cool 65 and he would like 72 all winter long. With the cost of oil close to $3 a gallon, I hate to even turn the heat on, but it's getting into the 20's this week and it has to be done for the kids and so DH doesn't grow icicyles on his beard.

What do you keep your heat on?

Does anyone have one of those wood burning furnaces? How much are they installed?

68 mostly during the day, 66 at night.

Once in a while I'll flip it up to 69. I can't believe how much of a difference that ONE degree makes!

Since we got carpet installed a few years ago, the house is much warmer at 68/69 than it used to be with just hardwood floors.

Ok I love it cooler. I had it on 50 but broke down and turned it up. To 58. It wont go any higher than that this winter. Yes I am comfortable at that.

62-63 all winter long. Never higher. I hate gas bills. I always tell everyone here if you're cold throw on a sweatshirt. My kids think they need to wear shorts all year round.

It's set on 65 right now. I feel the same way about putting on sweatshirts. My kids also want to go barefoot all the time. We've got hard flloors of one sort or another through the entire house, so it stays cooler in here. I figure they'll get tired of having cold feet and wear slippers or socks.

Downstairs is 68, upstairs is 67.

I'll kick it up a degree or put the fireplace on if I'm cold (and usually I'm dressed very warm - I'm always cold).

We keep the AC on 78 during the summer.

We have two heat pumps one for upstairs and one for downstairs.....the one upstairs is set at 63, the one downstairs is set at 67. I sometimes might bump it up to 70 if we have company, but I comfortable at my regular temps...I wear long sleeves t-shirts and sometimes a sweater over the top and always have socks and slippers on when around the house. When we go over to someone else home, I always feel so hot when the set their thermostat at 72-74 .........I want to strip down...lol

Ours usually stays around 63.......and with the weather here (Central Texas) It only runs at night....but this year so far, we haven't had to turn it on yet.....it's cold 65 degrees here today, and it's supposed to creep back in the 80's again by Friday....there have been a couple days we have had to kick on the air....

I just had oil delivered today. I got 203 gallons and it was $590.
I try to keep the temp a little below 70, about 68, but hubby has a fit. He always says "you have the thermostat set too low, it needs to stay at 70." So, he turns it up and I turn it back when he's not here.

Mine is at 70-73 I have reynards and get cold and my hands turn blue constantly so even at those temps you can always find me on the couch wrapped in a blanket and a comforter. I am lucky though, my landlord and his wife argue alot and he travels alot so when he is away she likes to turn the heat down stairs all the way up and leave the house. Last winter my thermostat was all the way up for most of the winter although I had it set on 70 at one point I even turned my heat off it was so warm upstairs. I was quite comfy but when I had people over they were a little uncomfortable and kept asking to open the windowns

Right now it's on 65 and I turn it to 62 at night. I'm up before everyone else so I turn it back to 65 and no one even no's a difference. When it snows or gets really cold I'll kick it up then but not til then. Occasionally, during the day I will turn it way down. As the boys say, "mom's thermostat is messed up". One minute I'm freezing the next I"m sweating. Mine too think they are suppose to wear shorts year round. I couldn't tell you how many times a day I tell them to put on clothes. I keep aphgans/blankets laying around in the living room so they can snuggle up.

62-63 during the day. 55 at night. We have a programable thermostat so I set it to come on 15 min. before we get out of bed. It goes to 55 at 8pm. DH and DS are always complaining that it's cold. They like to wear short sleeves but I tell them to put on a sweatshirt like me!! I hate gas bill too!

I never turn the heat on. If we get cold in the winter, we might make a fire in the fireplace, otherwise we put on socks, sweatshirt, and an extra blanket. I too hate Gas Bills! :O)

62 during the night and 65 during the day.

Sometimes during the day, if it is only me here at home, I'll turn the heater down and use a space heater by my feet.

Ok, I was feeling bad for DH and DD because I have the heat set on 68 (they always complain it's cold) and 60 at night, now I don't feel so bad after reading what other people set theirs on. I turn it off totally when we are gone. I turned it on last night for the first time because it was supposed to get down to 32, but I got up and is was only 43, LOL, so I turned it back off. I am just not looking forward to paying a high gas bill this winter, so may go even lower with the thermostat.

Our bills are always much lower in the Winter than they are during the Summer... It feels like the house temp is so much easier to control in the Winter (to me).

We have had an incredibly mild Fall so far here in northwestern AZ -- which is great since it usually seems like Fall lasts one week before it goes straight into Winter cold! In Phoenix, it has still been into the 90's during the day!

Hopefully, it will cool down by next week (since I have to make a trip to Phx!).

I try to keep ours around 68 most of the time. But, with our cold Maine winters, I do end up turning it up on the very cold days!

Ours is set at 71 right now.
I cannot stand to wear a lot of clothes unless I am sitting around doing nothing.
I do wear long pants and long sleeve shirts when it is really cold.
DH is on a blood thinner for heart problems and gets cold easy so I don't like to go much cooler.
At night he sleeps in flannel pjs and with lots of covers and I sleep in a t-shirt and usually not many, if any, covers.

I just had oil delivered last week and the bill was almost $700. Obviously, this will be a ONE FILL winter.

I never turn the heat about 60 unless we have company. I am used to that temp. My teenage son is always cold but sits around in a t-shirt, so no sympathy there. I turn the heat off completely when we leave for work/school in the morning, and the temp usually only goes down 5 degrees during the day. I also turn it down when we go to bed because we have electric blankets.

We have a heat pump, so it's usually set at 69-70 and then at nights down to about 65. If I get chilly, we have a gas fireplace that I can turn on to take the chill off. It has a blower fan on it, so it can warm up quite a few rooms with no problem.

I keep mine at 50 most of the time- with people on both sides of us, they usually help keep our house warm. I put on a sweatshirt w/ wooly socks and get a comforter. Dh will turn it on if he is cold to around 70, which I think is too warm.

60 @ night and 64-66 in day when I'm home. I bought long underwear for the really colder months. I wore them the other day and they really helped. If I'm gone it goes back to 60 or less. I wear extra clothes also in cooler months.

It's at 68 right now, but when/if it gets colder out, I'll probably bump it up to 70 or 72. I hate to be cold and will put on a sweatshirt, even in the summer. DH is mostly always hot, so we have thermostat wars -- he turns it down, I turn it up. I hate to pay the high heating bills, but I refuse to be cold in my own home.

I was beginning to think that I was the only one that cut the heat up at night! I too have a 5 year old that kicks the covers off at night. I put pajamas on him and a blanket sleeper but still go in there and he's out from under the covers and his hands and face are cold. So, I set the thermostat on about 68 degrees at night (turn it up to 70 if it's cold) and then cut it back to about 62 degrees during the day (again...unless it's cold and then it may go a few degrees higher). My husband is like most...he thinks it's too cold. If he's home during the day, I tell him to put on more clothes!

During the summer, we keep it on 76 degrees and run the ceiling fans (have one in most rooms and all the bedrooms) and a couple of floor fans. With the fans, most people cannot believe that I have the thermostat on 76!

I absolutely despise high utility bills!! Plus, we only get the bills every other month (we are in a rural area but have public/city utilities) so we have to pay for two months at a time! It gets quite costly during cold months more so than the summer months!

We keep it set at 60. It seems dh is lowering it a degree every year because I know we used to keep it at 63; then it was set at 62. I get cold but I just add another layer and get off my tush and move around to get the blood flowing and then I'm fine. Our oil bill in Sept. was over $900. I'm hoping they won't deliver again until March.

Just reading everyones replies I'm FREEZING at those temps. I'm in Alabama and I can tell you I will NOT be cold, If it drops below 70 outside I'm freezing to death. I keep the AC on 75 in Summer months and between 70-75 in winter months. Our home is total electric and our power bill runs between 250.00 to 280.00 every month year round. But keep in mind, we have electric stove, electric dryer, washer, dishwasher, electric water heater, ceiling fans in every room but kitchen, our home is 1688 Sq Ft. Plus we keep 2 of the 4 computers running 24/7. All in All I don't think our power bill is high compared to some.

We hate the cost of oil these days too. We should order more before the price gets much higher but we really can't. During the day I'm the only one here to I keep around 61 62 ish. If I start to feel chilled I usually light a bunch of candles and put on extra warm socks (I almost always wear a sweater this time of year). If candles are low I'll turn the oven on for a few minutes. Occasionally I give in and bump it up to 65 but usually I wait until about 10 min before dh gets home ( He's the type that complains alot). When we go to bed at night it's always turned back to 60.

Its really crazy when electric heat is actually cheaper. My mom just a acquired a couple of smaller electric space heaters so she's going to lend us one when we visit for thanksgiving and we'll se how that goes.

We still haven't had to turn on any heat.....supposed to hit 80 again today, but the weather man said cold front coming through tonight, so only a high of 70 tommorow.....I'm so ready for some cool weather. Tired of having to run the air!

we keep it around 62-64 during the day and it falls down to 60 at night and kicks back up in the morning. If it's cold, we'll turn on the fireplace for a little while and just heat the room we are in instead of the whole house. I can't stand houses that are really warm in winter. I like to wear long sleeves and sweaters...not short sleeves and flip flops LOL Of coarse, I prefer cool over hot and like the lower bills, especially since gas it supposed to go up about 10% this winter (or more)

Those of you that have trouble keeping the covers on your children at night, have you tried tucking the covers in underneath the mattress? If the blanket isn't wide enough to do that, buy the next size up. I buy queen blankets for a full size and full size for a twin. Plenty of hangover to tuck the covers in.
I can't even begin to imagine what our natural gas bill would be if the thermostat was set over 70° at night. Plus, I sleep better in a very cool room. The kids have electric blankets and DH and I have a heated mattress pad.
