AquaDots Recall

Toys linked to date-rape drug recalled - Consumer News - MSNBC.com

I know a lot of people have this toy and I didn't see it posted here yet.

Quote:
Scientists say the beads contain a chemical that the human body metabolizes into the so-called date rape drug Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate. When eaten, the compound — made from common and easily available ingredients — can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

Any idea where we return these. My daughter bought one with her birthday money from Wal-Mart and we threw away the reciept thinking she was going to keep it, guess we learned our lesson there. BTW anyone know of any toys made in the U.S. we could buy for Christmas?

I met a woman in kamrt who was looking through toys and tossing them aside if she saw they were from China. I though she was a bit fanatic with the situation.. now I'm going to be just as hyper over NOT choosing foreign toys

Sucks that we can't buy toys online either - no way to tell if they're from China or not until after they get here. I need toys for my 4 and 7 year old. I have to go through and look at what we've got in there and see if any are from China. If so, back they go.

I saw this story on the Today Show this morning, how scary! Think we're sticking with some video games and some homemade dolls and stuffed animals for Christmas here.....

DD just got AquaDots for her birthday a few weeks ago. I told her this morning that we had to take it back because it's not safe for her to play with. The poor thing burst into tears and was so upset. My heart broke for her but she perked up when I told her she could pick out something else when we take this back. The problem will be in finding a replacement that's safe. This is really upsetting.

Thanks for the list link Brenda. I will definitely be consulting it for gift ideas.

I just got off the phone with customer service at Spin Master. I had purchased the Studio and four of the refill packs. I have a Return Authorization Number from them. They are sending a prepaid padded mailer for me to pull out the beads. I am sending back to them and they will send replacement beads for the refill packs and Aqua Dot Studio. She assured me that I would have it in plenty of time for Christmas.

I was on the phone on hold for about 35 minutes. It's worth it to me instead of sending back the products which I bought online.

As near as I can tell, the risk comes when a child puts the bead(s) is his/her mouth and allows it o dissolve. Older children can probably use the product without any ill effects. For what its worth.

Yes, unless a child swallows it or puts it in their mouth, then there shouldn't be any problem. If a child is putting it in their mouth then they shouldn't be allowed to have that product or any other product like that to begin with. IMO.

There are several children in comas because of this product. Who knows if the child handles the dots, then puts his hand in his mouth or touches other things that go in another child's mouth - what could happen. Not to mention that pets or visiting children may find these on the floor. Personally, I wouldn't take the chance. I had never heard of these before the recall, but then again, my kids are older.

I took some back to Target yesterday. I wouldn't even give this to an older child. Just because they are old enough to know better it doesn't mean they won't put them in their mouth. Not worth the chance.

That was probably me!! Both of my children know to look to see where something is made before they even ask for it. I told them I feel so sorry for Santa because he can't buy China products and have something horrible happen to all of the children! But I was in Kmart doing a china check and people were just looking a my son like, oh my gosh.........

The other day my son came home from school with 2 dots. He said a girl in his class was giving them away. Well, he left them sitting on the table so I just threw them away. Glad I did. Then hubby and I are watching Lou Dobbs and the recall came on. I called both kids in to watch the news. They were shocked!!

Last night on Lou Dobbs, I swear they said that you could take them back to ToysRUs no matter where they came from and even if you didn't have a receipt - since the toy has been out since April.

even if kids know their not suppose to, some will find out there's something up with them and try to get others to try them while at school or something, mean teens put them in other teens food or something like that so it still shouldnt be around kids

What about just handling the dots? What if the kids have damp hands? Can't our skin absorb the chemicals? I would also be afraid of older kids/adults using them for unintended (illegal) purposes.

Take them back, without a doubt. I am betting that Wal-Mart will take them back without a receipt, but I also heard on the news that Toys-r-us is taking back ALL of them with or without a receipt, whether you bought it there or not. That should tell ya how dangerous these dots are I guess. Seriously, think about what could happen to your pet even if your kids know not to be putting them in the mouth (but of course you never really know--even older kids like to 'taste' things like that--think playdoh).

Here's the real kicker to all of these recalls: Think about ALL of the toys that are in our homes already that no one even bothered testing/before more strict product standards were out there, etc. I bet that is pretty scary.

I have decided to return what I purchased and get my money back. I had called Spin Master again this week. I still have not received the postage paid envelope that I was to put the recalled beads in to send back to them. When they received the beads, they were going to send replacements. I asked the customer service rep. when and where the replacement beads were coming from. Get this, he said they were coming from the same factory that produced the defective ones! What the heck? I am pretty certain that I read somewhere that last week, the Chinese government had banned all exports from this particular factory.

Personally, I could not feel comfortable with what were supposed to be the replacment beads. I will just go and purchase something else to replace what I bought. I think that Spin Master just wants to get back as many as the beads as they can. I think that they will be out of business because I think that the consumers whose children fell ill and almost died from ingesting these beads will file lawsuits against the company.
