Has anyone used one of these? How much do they cost? Thanks!

A few years ago when my Nephew was 10 his parents signed him up with Sylvan. It cost them $10,000 and they are still paying on it! I cant recall for how long he was there but to me it was pretty short.. like a few months.

Its my understanding they test the child and determine how much tutoring they need and go from there. My Nephews grades improved while in Sylvan but it was really a pain for my sister in law as she had to drive him there and stay during the tutoring which seemed late in the evening at times. They dont do a one on one tutoring, but rather a small group setting.

I wanted to get my daughter in Sylvan as well but I just couldnt see going into debt over that much money so her teachers worked together and tutored her during school hours!

If finances are a concern and the child is in school ask a teacher at an IEP or Parent/Teacher meeting. They should be able to provide or at least tell you of a tutor. "No child left behind" Act.

I agree with the above poster- ask your school district first. Our district is offering free tutoring through groups like sylvan and huntington learning centers this year because of the no child left behind act. It is free to kids that are on free and reduced lunches here. We get the reduced lunch here so my daughter has a tutor 2 days week for her reading and writing.

Made sure there is certified teachers tutoring. one of the sylvas's here has student terachers. they got in lots of trouble for advertising that they had cert. teachers to assist and was one on one and when the smoke cleared, there was student teachers 1:5. the cost was something like 100 a hr then.
