Some parents have had luck putting their children on a gluten and casein free diet (layman's terms no wheat and milk).

Autism is one of those things that you can treat sypmptoms, , and learn how to deal and cope, but there is no cure..... I do hope that one day soon there will be.....but a cure is going to be hard to find when there is no straight forward cause...

No cure out there...won't happen unless they figure out a way to rewire brains.. Match of Dimes is a great organation..but their slogans suck....Stamp out Birth Defects...hmm...no way to do that..at all..short of cloning perfect children in a dish and putting it thru genetic testing before being implanted..even then way too many natural things can happen to a fetus that does not have to be genetic linked.. You can help some of the symptoms and behaviors...but cure it...bullhockey

| I agree. That has to be one of the stupidest slogans ever created. I doubt there's many people out there who wouldn't be glad to have every child born healthy and happy. Unfortunately, that's just not going to happen. Jenny McCarthy is a ditz and while a change in diet may have benefited her son, it sure didn't cure him if he really is autistic. A change in diet or routine can help but it's not a cure, just a control. I wouldn't put any stock in any claims Jenny makes. If the diet she's hawking 'cured' her son's autism, he never had autism in the first place.

This sounds just like what I was told when we applied for SSI for my son. The SSI turned down his 1st app their reasons for doing this, HE CAN OUTGROW IT .I asked them to send me proof of 1 case where anyone that truly had Autism outgrew it. *I'm still waiting on that proof*Diet I agree can help with issues but its by no means a cure. It has been shown in a few cases in the pass , Children that can't digest or eat Dyes, glutens can have issues with learning, behaviors, things that might make one suspect a *Mental* problem and changing the diet has been shown to improve the issues and possibly cure the issues with the child. However, If her diet *Cured* her son I highly doubt he ever had Autism it to start with. There's no even a *Cause* for Autism let alone a cure and this comes form leading EXPERTS in the field of studying Autism. While I'm glad she thinks she found the *Cure* I don't believe for 1 sec her son even had it. Since it took over 4 YEARS for my son to get DX with Autism ( Legal DX ), It was mainly because they *Studied* his pattern of behaviors and waited to see as he got older if the behaviors with lessen or become worse. In some cases they * didn't really * lessen they kind of when a different way, In others they became worse. My Son has thus far been in the Hospital 2 times. 1st for 11 days, then again for 19 days. Both times they knew he had it, but needed to study him to make sure he was given the right DX and placed on the right treatment plan. Since he came out of the last hospital 2 months ago, He has been placed in a New School, Placed on a Few new Rx's and his behaviors have been a million times better. But hes not cure, he probably will be this way for the rest of his life. His *outlook* is not good and he deff will be on some kind of RX till the end.

So every 6 months we go thru this review on a council that approves or nays.. I stopped going about 2 years ago..waste of time to sit there thru all these cases, most not being the Autism school...they just call me..well the lady in Special Ed I have been dealing with for 12 years retired, soa new one took over..lots of PHD's and what not following her name she calls me and asks WHY do I think Daniel belongs in the autism school....I say excuse me?? She says what is your reasoning of him being in the autism school..I went...well...........he has AUTISM then she asked what OTHER reasons did I have to justify the autism school ..I told her he had autism..plain simple, I did not have to justify anything else other then my son had autism to go to the autism school....Here's your sign

.. Well it never made it to that point before he was placed in the hospital for 19 days. I tried and tried to tell them YOU CANT MOVE HIM PLACE TO PLACE multi times daily. He needs to be in 1 classroom with breaks in-between doing his class work.. His reg classroom teacher was scared to death of him , She freaked every single time something happened in class, I tried and tried to get them to place him in a program called WINGS, But NO, they kept shoving this no child left behind act at me. I told them Look this is not working and frankly I'm sick and tired of coming to school to *Collect* him when he has a melt down, UNDERSTAND he has AUTISM ! Don't y'all get it AUTISM, I got the well we don't have a resource Teacher in that field, We don't have a classroom just for children with Autism, We don't have a this or that, ARGHHHHHHHH, I'm not kidding you, since school started in Aug I have gone to the school 29 TIMES to get him because something would happen and they didn't know what to do with him. And I went to get this, 9 IEP meetings, PLUS 4 meetings with the Special Ed Resource Supervisor. Finally, When he got out of the hospital after 19 days they wouldn't let me keep him home till they had an opening at a different School with a classroom just for Children with Autism/ Behavior Problems.. NO I had to send him back to the school or face court for not sending him to school.Needless to say the 16 days he went back to the school I went 11 times to * collect * him for melt downs. Now he's in a new school and I have YET the 1st time gotten so much as a phone call for anything other than he wasn't feeling well at school 2 weeks ago. The Teachers have done nothing but PRAISED my son on his Manners ( Daily we get a note saying she wished all her students had manners as he does )... I have went to the school invited by the teachers to see what they are doing and what he is learning, all 3 Teachers tell me he is so well liked and really a good child. They showed me his work with all 100's and projects he is making doing... He has a few times gone into the Time out room, 1st few times he spent almost 15 Min's in there till he was clam enough to rejoin the class, But as time has gone on he if and when he does go is now down to less than 5 Min's. He is so happy, he comes home in the best moods, He willing to do his work, He's not hitting or cussing or throwing items. He doesn't cry any more. Plain and simple he's HAPPY . He not under any pressure to do REG classwork that he DOESN'T understand and doesn't know what to do with. even tho it taken us all this time to finally get him in a school suited just for him, I'm glad this unfolded the way it did or else he would still be in the reg school trying to deal with things he just couldn't understand. So I know what you mean, I have been there and done that also. It SUCKS when they just wont or don't care to listen.

OMG - aren't the "meltdown" phone calls from the school THE WORST??? My son is in 5th grade now, and he had so many during 2nd grade that I got an anxiety attack every time the phone rang while he was in school, fearing it was a meltdown phone call. It got to the point where I was afraid to leave the house, as I was certain to have a message from the school on my answering machine. Finally, at the end of the year, I got a pre-paid cell phone, and that gave me immense peace of mind. Knowing that I could leave the house and still get phone calls if necessary from the school. I have to say that with medication and him maturing a bit, his Autism is under control. He has not had any problems in school this year. He is in a regular classroom, with only speech therapy for expressive language. I have had teachers come up to me that have worked with him in the past and earlier this school year say that they are so impressed with his behavior this year. And that whatever we are doing - DON'T change it!! LOL He has been on one medication since before it was even approved for Autism. I heard about it from another parent of a child with Autism. This was when he was in 2nd or 3rd grade. I went to the doctor and told him I wanted "xxx" medication. That I had heard about it and how it was helping children with Autism. Luckily, my son's doctor knows I am not full of "it" and he trusted my judgement. I have to honestly say that this certain medication, along with an ADHD medication has made a world of difference in my son's behavior. He still has Autism, but it is under control. Recently this medication was approved for Autism, and I am SOOOO GLAD, as now it is more well known with doctors for treating Autism symptoms, and can help so much more children. This medicine is Risperdal. |

This medicine is Risperdal. This drug and the combo of adderall relase caps and also the adderall pill during the day has made a huge difference in Daniel...I know that is how I got him potty trained....he had only one side effect though, increased appettite..and he is one of those autism kids who has NO food issues at all...this last visit with neouro we cut the risperdal in half and raised the adderall a little..so far has been smooth sailing..huge difference in his appettie already...one other time I took him off it for a whole summer to drop the weight... BTW that was a very very long summer for me..! All meds have side effects that will effect each person differently ...but this one was a miracle for Daniel..he also stopped picking his fingernails off, or picking at his skin until it bled..that was a issue , a bad one with him...he does not feel pain very well.

Again, we all have to decide what is best for our children...and I am sure that risperdal is a good drug for some I am just trying to warn people to watch for the side effects. Not that it will happen to everyone that takes risperdal it is actually only 1 out of every 100 which to me is 1 too many.

This medicine has been a blessing for my family. Luckily, my son has not had any problems with it, or the normal weight gain problem from it. I cannot imagine what our family would be like without this medicine. And I am aware of all side effects. Thanks for your concern though. ![]() My son's Risperdal dose is super low. In fact, all of his doses are low, and I just lowered another does (with the doctors okay). Leaps and bounds!! |
