On carry-out, all you're doing is buying food from them and paying for it. Isn't that what their purpose is in the first place, and what they're already making money at? Tips to me are for extra convenience, being served, delivered to, etc. People don't tip at McDonald's or Burger King, so why for the exact same service for pizza or Chinese?

I do tip a dollar to the Chinese restaurant near us because the bartender handles the carryout order and most of the time bartenders only make half of minimun wage (plus tips). I believe that pizza carryout employees make minimum wage or higher so I don't tip them.

I do for some carryout, but not all. Depends on location: ie, if I go to Outback where they have it delivered to my car, I tip. If I go to my favorite chinese or mexican food place that I usually eat-in at, I will tip because I know the servers and it is usually the servers who bring out the food. If I go pick up a pizza, AND the counter help person is especially helpful then I will tip $1. That is usually a big surprise to the person at the counter and you can tell it does not happen often--but then I don't do it every time either. So, my answer is : "it depends"

Any food pick up that by design is meant to be picked up at a window (starbucks, fast food, etc) = no tip Any product that could be pick up or served at a table (pizza, Chinese, Applebees. Mimis, etc) = 8-10 %. I just round it to a convenient number. I tip the delivery guy more than when I pick the pizza up myself. The servers actually have to do more than when waiting on a table because of packaging everything up and placing it in bags with all the extras. And, the total isn't inflated by costly beverages or alcohol. It is just my husband and me right now, so we frequently call ahead to Mimis or Applebees for one take out dinenr and a salad. |

| I have never seen one at a drive thru window!! What are you tipping for?? The fresh air? The shorter wait? Not having to leave your car?

I always tip for carryout at a restaurant that I could have had sit down service. (Applebees, Bob Evans, Outback, etc) The server might not have served me at a table, but they still took my order, prepared it for me (often servers are the ones who prepare the cold items), boxed it up, make sure I have utensils and condiments, and ring me up. They are still only making server minimum wage. They get taxed on a percentage of sales and often have to tip out based on total sales including carryout. I get carry out often and can't imagine stiffing a carry out server just as I couldn't imagine sitting at a restaurant and eating and getting up without tipping. The server is still providing me a service.

You are sooo right. I was a waitress for 30 years. The waitstaff always had to ring up the orders and it is figured into their totals that they have to tip out on. No one liked doing take out orders because of this and true it is SOOO much more work. All the stuff you have to remember to put in there. I always tip at a restaurant carry out. Not at McDonalds or even a pizza place. Those places are making minimum wage.

I don't tip for carry out food. My gas, my legwork, I'm picking up food. The only place I do tip for food, is sit down, of course, or I give a small tip if doing curbside to go, but it is a less amount than if we ate there. And my local Starbucks, I always dump the coins recieved as change in their tip jar, cause they are so nice there. I've had occassions where I forgot to ask for room for milk in my coffee/espresso drink, and asked them to dump a bit out, and they offer to make a totally new drink, (cafe americano mostly) so I would have the foam on it. They are really nice there. I see the change jar mostly at Dunkin Donuts and won't tip because isn't it there job to serve coffee and donuts? and that's what I'm getting. I tip for delivery always.

Ditto! I worked at Chili's many years ago when attending college. It takes work to put the "to go" order together for the customer. I remember having to multi-task it in with taking care of my other tables. |

Not unless it is hard extra work, like scooping ice cream. The ice cream can be really hard and it looks like it's more difficult to do that than to wait tables sometimes. I don't tip on standard take out though. I guess because I've never been a waiter, I just can't see how it's as taxing as running back and forth to a table and getting more water, a bottle of ketchup, more wine, whatever. |

I typically do. There is one restaurant I always tip at for carry out. It goes to the chef.

I don't tip for carryout pizza-that's just not necessary IMHO. I do tip a buck when I get carryout Chinese but only because the people at the place I go to are so nice and the food is awesome-I go there all the time for the buffet so they sort of know me now. I've never got curb side to go food from anyplace but I would tip 10% of the total if I did. Someone had to go to all the work of packing all the stuff up, probably the waitstaff, and a couple bucks wouldn't make a big difference to my bottom line.

with the pizza shops around me, they figure the delivery charge in the final cost....... usually 2-3 bucks. so I don't tip, they are only coming about 3-4 blocks to give me my order, but If I'm having a good day,. I may give a buck or two actually depends on the pizza shop and how long I had to wait
