Thanksgiving Attire - Blue jeans or dressed up?

Okay this is a spinoff from the formal or informal dining thread.

Do you wear jeans to Thanksgiving? Or do you dress up? Quite honestly, if I am going to be that full, I want to be comfortable. Besides, most of the guys come in from deer hunting that morning anyway so they have on jeans/camo.

And since I dress up every day for work, you better be happy I show up in jeans (and not my jammies!)

Jeans. DH and one of the kids will be in camo, probably my DD.

If my mom had things her way, we'd be in formal wear and the like. Don't know who she's trying to impress, but it drives me crazy.

Jeans and your favorite football jersey. My husbands family has been doing it for as long as he can remember, so it was one of the traditions we adopted when we got married. Just like in my family, everyone gets new pajamas Christmas Eve and wears them all day long Christmas day. I love traditions, I think it makes the holidays just that much more special!

Entire family will be in jeans (though my DD does get in a mood sometimes where she will up and decide that "khakis look better")!

Where is your family from Polve? My family has also done this as long as I can remember, and everyone always thinks that we are crazy!

This Thanksgiving I will be in jeans and 3ACR shirt for our Dinner with all the families, kids will still be wearing their jersey's though, once we get home I'll change.....had thought of telling everyone to come in PJ's but that might be dangerous!

My family isn't dressed up nor are we sloppy casual either. DH changes after coming in from hunting. Actually, it's not a good idea to wear the hunting camo in the house because of the smells that permeate the clothing.
I miss the days when people took more pride in their appearance on special occassions. IMHO, sweats and pajama pants should be left for around the house wear when it's just your immediate family.

It's just us for the day so it will be jeans. We're going to a friend's house for dessert and I'm debating whether or not to change into something a little nicer. I'll see how tired I am

My husbands family is from Texas, he thinks it started with them all playing football after dinner. But he has pictures of him and his 4 brothers in Steeler and Cowboy shirts and he was about 2, he is the youngest, so he isn't sure how long its been going on. We asked his mom a few years ago, and she didn't know exactly either.

Since our Thanksgiving will be so unconventional, we will be dressed in casual clothes.
We will be clean and neat and so will our clothes.
I do like to "dress up" for the Holidays when we can tho.
It makes the day or event seem more special.

Jeans with a nice top.

We are staying at our house with about 8 extra guests, we will not be traveling to visit or anything like that so... we dress comfy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Guess it has nothing to with where our families are from then, though we live in Texas now we're from Ohio.....My Grandma has pictures of my Dad and his brothers and sisters wearing jersey's, and before they had those, with tshirts with names taped to the back....my Dad carried on the tradition with us, and I wouldn't know how to do it anyother way.....

Um, I'm not understanding this question.
Here in the Southwest jeans are dressed up.
Seriously, around here you have your everyday jeans and your Sunday go to meetin' jeans.
I know somewhere in my closet I actually have a ladies tuxedo but I will probably only ever break it out again if I were ever elected president or something.

I really hope that you are joking!
Blue jeans are not dress clothes no matter where or how you live or who you live with or anything else!!!

That's just a matter of opinion. Both my husband and son "dress up" - for church, family pictures, ect. - in nice blue jeans and a nice polo or button-down shirt with boots. They do own khakis that they occasionally wear, but mostly it's jeans. Maybe it's a regional thing? We're in the south.

And back to the matter at hand, we'll all be in jeans.

Since it's just me and the DH it makes no difference what we wear. He'll probably wear jeans and his Eagles jersey and I'll wear jeans and my Steelers jersey. If we were going somewhere, I would probably wear jeans and a nice sweater. Before we were married it was whatever at my parents house and then I changes shirts to go to his parents house. His parents were a little more "formal".

Put me on the list for jeans, too! We got to my husband's dad's side of the family for Thanksgiving and they are good 'ole Texas guys & gals. I'm also a Texan.

And, yes, jeans can be considered nice clothes! LOL!

You really wear blue jeans to church??????
Isn't that kind of disrespectful?
If you don't dress up for church, what do you consider a dress up occaision?
Not formal, just dressing necely.

I'll probably be in jeans and a collared shirt. It's supposed to be chillier here on Thursday (Fort Worth, Texas), so I'll probably wear long sleeves. If it was going to be like it is today (low 80's), I'd probably be in a polo shirt. I'm having dinner with friends who aren't terribly formal. Their boys will be in jeans and t-shirts. Mom might be in a casual skirt.

As for the questions of jeans being more formal, it certainly is a regional thing. Since moving to Texas, I've noticed that "nice" jeans definitely are accepted in more formal type situation than they are in other regions. As for wearing jeans at church, again, I think it's a regional thing but also depends on the church. At my church, some people wear suits/dresses while others are in jeans and t-shirts. We joke that the dress code for our deacons is baggy kahkis and Hawaiian shirts. What people wear isn't a big deal.

Seriously, Arizona's really casual, unless you get stuck in Scottsdale. Jeans are okay just about anywhere except a wedding or funeral. Dark ones are dressier than light ones, but that's about as much as you have to worry about.

It is a day for lounging around and being comfortable. Personally I will be in a light weight wind suit (with elastic waist pants). We all have our own idea of comfort and mine is making sure that I have room for pie at the end of the meal.

I am not upset about people wearing blue jeans to have dinner with their family.
Well, unless they are going to a very formal, fancy restaurant.
But at home, wear what you want!
To me blue jeans are NOT comfortable so I don't wear them.
For a big meal like Thanksgiving, I want an elastic waist!
We don't dress up but if everyone wanted to, I would dress up.
At Christmas we SOMETIMES dress up more than usual.
BUT I still think it is disrespectful to your church to go there in jeans.
It's like it is not special enough to dress up for.
Maybe God doesn't care, but I'd like him to think that I had more respect for Him and his Home than to dress in jeans.
And wearing jeans and a fancy blouse is an oxymoron!

I know this is going off topic but I am curious why you think that jeans are "disrespectful" to church? And the reason I ask is because this is the very reason I stopped attending church 35 years ago.

Is it the thought that jeans are casual?
Is it that you personally don't find jeans comfortable?
Is it that the jeans don't cost enough to be worthy of church?
Is it the material they are made from is too "rough"?
Is it just because that's the way you were raised?

I guess I just never thought of clothing in such a way so I need enlightening.

I personally am very comfortable in jeans. My job requires that I wear western cut jeans and a western shirt to work. Add a pair of Lucchase boots and I think I look rather nice.

The only pants that I own that have an elastic waist are yoga pants and workout shorts. Oh and maybe pajamas. So I guess to me anyone wearing something with an elastic waist to church would be way to casual for the occasion.

I guess I would just like to believe that God is a little less judgemental than a church congregation.
But that is just me.

Comfy casual here, but bathing IS required. It's going to be in the 70's tomorrow, so I'll probably be in capris and the boys will wear shorts, I'm sure. EXCEPT for my 5yr. old-he is insisting on wearing his "fancy" clothes. So he will be in black cords, a LS white oxford shirt, and a tie. Not sure where that one came from??????????????//

Because I do not have an hour glass figure, all of my slacks have elastic waists.
Some are dressier than others and I wear the most dressy ones for more dressy occasions if I don't wear a skirt.
Blue jeans are for camping and very casual wear.
Nicer slacks are for more dressy places, like church or a party that isn't formal, things like that.
I was raised to wear dresses and skirts.
I do wear skirts too, they make me feel a bit more feminine!
Most jeans probably cost way more than my slacks do .
They are uncomfortable to me but apparently not to others.
The material is rough and maybe that is why they are more appropriate for outdoor activities.
Church is just such a special place that I think people should dress with all the respect that a church deserves.
If you are required to wear western wear to your job, you probably do look nice for the job.
DH and I are square dancers and while I wear "fancy" skirts and blouses, he wears western shirts and sometimes jeans when we go to dances.
We just need to wear whatever is appropriate for the occasion.
I do own one pair of jeans and they have an elastic waist and I wear them camping and doing outside things if it's not too hot or cold. I find them extra uncomfortable in hot or cold weather.
For super comfort I prefer to wear shorts around the house.

Again, that's just your opinion. Just because that is a fact for your family, doesn't necessarily mean that it is for mine. Where I live, it's perfectly appropriate for people (mostly men, but occasionally ladies, as well) to go anywhere - even wedding and funerals - in nice blue jeans and a nice shirt. We attend a small, country church where you'll see attire ranging from suit & tie to jeans & tee shirts. . .we're usually somewhere in the middle. I am thankful for a church family that doesn't judge people based on how they're dressed.

Shorts and T-shirts. Nothing Fancy here. Doesn't really matter what you wear. The point is being all together and being Thankful for what we have especially that my niece received the call on Wednesday that she is Cancer free!!!!!!

I hate wearing jeans as to me they aren't comfortable, but we are all about the 'jeans' and casual Thanksgiving, wear what you want to wear. I can't even tell you what everyone had on the other day, I just don't pay attention to clothes like that I guess. Naked, I'd notice I suppose!

Just want to add, here in some parts of the South, it's ok to go to a funeral in jeans. I've even seen lots of people buried in their jeans. I've seen pallbearers in jeans, etc. I have never worn jeans to a funeral (and never will, I do consider it a time to dress up unless it's a specific request from the deceased or the deceased's family not to), but it is totally ok in the area I'm from. It's very well accepted. Very down to earth/hometown people and most are farmers, etc. Nobody will say a thing if you show up pretty much anywhere in jeans in some parts of the South; it's the uniform here, ha ha. Now, I didn't say ALL parts of the South, but I know the area I grew up in is like that. There are also many many 'blue jean' church services that they hold in this area that are casual, come as you are services. Blue jeans does not equal stinky, filthy, or dirty anything of course. Clean jeans. Everyone I've ever seen at a funeral, wedding, etc. in jeans was bathed, clean, smelled nice, etc. Clothes do not make the person after all.

I would consider pants with an elastic waist more casual than jeans and would never wear them to church.

(I wore a long sleeved Tshirt and jeans to Thanksgiving)

are we just talking about Blue Jeans ?? Or anything made with Jean Material ??

I have some very nice Capri White Jeans that are *very dressy*

Don't know I'm from the South and we wear Jeans just about anywhere Including Church. I have asked before if Jeans were acceptable in Church and the answer was.

We are just glad you came, God loves us no matter what or how we dressed. Coming to worship the Lord is what matters not the clothing you wear.

I also guess I'm odd, But if Jesus can have his feet washed my a Whore with her perfume and he can sit in the same area that shes in, Then he will not judge me on wearing a pair of jeans to worship him.

Speaking just for myself, I wear jeans anywhere and everywhere, including several days a week to the office. It is acceptable attire in an engineering environment. I am funny though, I will not wear sneakers with them like the others do - that's my way of differentiating. However, I would not wear jeans to church because I personally feel that a house of worship requires a more dressed-up attire - business casual for me. I understand where jm19 is coming from, but by the same token, it's not for me to say what others should or should not wear.

What I'm really confused about is the down south part as I'd always thought that the women down south dressed to the nines and didn't leave the house without full makeup??? I definitely got that impression on the college campuses that we visited....comparing saying UNC to Cornell....the girls at UNC wore cute little flats, full manicures and makeup, polo shirts, and plaid shorts (my son said No Way he was going to school there! ) vs. jeans and t-shirts up north.

I dress up every day for work, and I wore jeans and a hoodie for Thanksgiving . It didn't hurt anyone and I even wear them to church. I don't think GOD cares what you wear as long as you are in his house .

Everyone is different and has their own ideas as to what to wear for Holidays and church. We should be glad that we have the option to wear what we want and not be persecuted for it. That is what living in the U.S.A means!
