*****Title inside***** RE: Santa and Cookie Monster Question

Is Santa and Cookie Monster Setting A Bad Example???

I didn't want to put the title as a heading incase some of you had children near by who beleived and can read.

I was driving home from work last night and on the radio they were saying that somewhere (I want to say London maybe?) that they are making Santa slim down because he is setting a bad example for kids by telling them its ok to be obese. During my drive people were calling in and saying how ridiculous that was. That Santa is Santa, the jolly fat man in a red suit. and a woman called up and agreed with them wanting Santa to slim down. She said that he is setting a bad example since kids think that all night for one night this man goes around eating cookies. She also went on to say how Cookie Monster also is a bad example for little kids

Maybe I am the odd one here but kids are kids just once, I think they should enjoy Santa for who he is and for who he was when I was growing up. I mean if people beleived in him till late in life I would have to say that the man hasn't aged since I was a kid. As far as Cookie Monster.. I just love him to pieces even at 35 I am still singing the C is for Cookie song with my neices and nephews.

So what are your thoughts on this? Do you think they should change Santa and Cookie Monster and maybe other charaters that we may have all grew up with just because it isn't "correct" for todays society?

This is just ridiculous. Plenty of people grew up with these characters and aren't fat. As far as I'm concerned, the people who want to do this don't want to take responsibility for their actions. They would rather blame cartoon characters.

I totally agree. DH and I were talking about this the other day as there was something on one of the morning talk shows about it. So stupid! I have heard that Cookie Monster now eats veggies on SS. I haven't watched in years but I've heard this. Insane!!

"They" are trying to change our way of thinking on everything.
This world is going to hell in a handbasket.
These people don't give us credit for having a brain and being able to use it!
What's next?

That's just it though, a lot of people DON'T use it.

It's just become so much easier to pass the buck onto someone else. In this case, let's let Santa and the Cookie Monster teach kids about healthy eating. Seriously? WTF? That's how way too many people are thinking nowadays.

There's way too many of these issues. It used to be PARENTS that had the most influence over their children. While I agree that there are more "outside influences" in children's lives more than ever, it's ALSO more than ever that parents need to take a VERY active stand in their kids lives, and not set them in front of the television or video games.

I have never ever in my life ever heard a child say I want to grow up and be just like Santa or the Cookie Monster. I want to eat cookies all the time and fly around on my sled.

Kids are smarter than alot of people give them credit for. They know what kind of people are role models for different things. Santa is a role model for being good all year, treating people with respect and loving those around you. He in no way advocates cookie eating and I really don't think kids think to themselves I want to grow up to be fat and jolly like Santa. They want to grow up and be giving and loving like Santa. He is projecting the correct image.

Parents now a days worry to much about things they shouldn't be worrying about. They spend far too much time on being PC than teaching simple respect, moderation, how to love and how to forgive.

Kids are far to prissy these days too. ( sorry if I offend anyone but this is my opinion) They are afraid to get dirty, quick to blame someone else rather than take responsibility for their actions, because of game systems and computers they are not as active as kids when I was younger. They just dont want to go outside anymore.

Kids need to be well rounded. They need to be exposed to both the good and the bad. They need to learn to make choices on their own with help from us. In order to do that they need things to be different so they have opportunities. If we keep trying to change everything how are they going to learn?

What about Barney? He is no slim chicken either!! What kind of message are we sending kids? It's better to be thin - so now we are making kids become bulimic? This pattern doesn't stop - if it's not one thing, it's another.

People need to take responsibility, and quit buying junk food & other nonsense! Maybe they should set a good example, and their children will follow!

well as an adult female I'm rather disappointed that my childhood dream of being like Santa didn't come true for me. It was always my dream to be fat, jolly have every single toy in the world wear a red suit all year long and can eat as many cookies as he likes, Oh and lets not forget hot coco.

Kidding of course.( well maybe, who else do we know that has every single toy in the world at his house to play with ?? LOL )

I have a hard time supporting group(s) of people as these. Their cause might be in the right place, but their actions is what keeps me from supporting them.

oh wow, what next! I never once looked at Santa, and said if he's fat, it's ok for me to be fat......My kids certainly don't look at him like that either. I really doubt sliming down Santa will help with obesity problem in children.
