Tipping?

I know the standards on tipping in a resturant, but how much would you tip when you get a massage?

I have an appointment tomorrow in the AM, I rec'd a gift certificate from my job before we moved and I am actually getting more than what the GC if for.

It will be for an hour and it will be for 75.00, how much would you tip them or would you tip them.

I hate when I get a manicure/pedicure and they ask you how much you are going to tip them. Esp. if they did it half Ass.....

I think 15% to 20% is standard for that kind of service, like when you get your hair done.

The going rate here for a full hour massage is about $60-$65. I have tipped $20 more for a good massage. Especially if they accomodate special requests (Okay, get your minds out of the gutter! LOL), like working on my feet more than another area, etc.

But, I would think that for a great massage, I would tip what you felt it was worth-to you.
Also take into consideration if it is the owner doing the massage, or not. Less should go to an owner, where more should go to someone who rents out or is working on salary/hourly.

I tip 20% on a massage BUT when I give a GC for one, I always pre-pay the tip so my gift recipient doesn't have to be out of pocket for anything

I have never thought of doing that....is it somehow noted that a tip was left, or do you just add the amount to the total you were planning on spending for the GC to begin with?

I had an hour long massage a few years ago. It was $75, paid by my hubby before I got there. I gave her a $15 tip at the end, or 20%.

I don't usually give a dollar amount. I pay for a service specifically. So, if a massage is $75 for an hour, I buy a massage and add the 20% tip into my payment (there is always a place on the credit card slip you sign). Then, I ask the person at the counter to make a note of it in they "system" and when I give the GC, I put something like "it's all taken care of...tip included "

ok i have a question
not to sound rude or stupid but why do you tip for services that you know the people that give you the service are well paid for? i never understood that part
i understand waitresses or hairdressers.

Just wanted to answer your question (since I am a Massage Therapist). In my case (in the area I work in at least), the hairdresser makes more money at the end of the week than I do. Even though she charges less per service (sometimes, it depends whether it's a hair cut or highlights or whatever), her clients are more consistant. I have sat around all day and had one client, maybe none. It all depends on the time of year and the holidays, etc. I'll admit I do get paid well, but it isn't consistant.

As far as the tipping goes, I don't ever expect it, although I do appreciate it. And like another poster said about someone asking how much the tip would be?! That is pretty bad service! I would never dream of doing that!

My frequent clients usually tip $10 - $15. And I have a few regular clients (they come once every 4 - 5 weeks) one tips $35 and the other tips $40 every time. I didn't know them before they started coming to me, but from what I understand, my $65 massage plus tip is less than they would have to pay driving to the "fancy" spas 45 minutes away. They are $75 + and you're also spending 45 minutes driving there & 45 minutes back plus a tip if you leave one. Also at the fancy spas, you never know which therapist you're getting. With me, it's only...me!

20% is the norm here.
but our massages are approximately: $35 for half hour or $50 for an hour
this is at local places and not the fancy spas

I am a LMT and work at a chiropractic office. Please do not think I get all thr money you pay. Our massages are $60/hr and I end up getting $30. There are a lot of items to buy, CEUs to pay for, insurance, LAUNDRY, etc. . A lot of people don't tip at all because it is at a dr.'s office and they think I keep all the $$$. For some reason, as soon as we run a special, hardly anybody tips.
