YMCA membership

I just wondered if any of you have a membership to your local YMCA and the cost. We live in a small town. This is our only "gym" type place. Its not very updated, though they have a pool. A family membership is like $500/yr. A single membership for me only is around $300. I think this is high. So, I was wondering how much it cost in your area. Thanks.

$500 would be sweet!

Yes, we belong to the local Y. I pay a whopping $1100/year for a family membership. Single adult membership is $680. All memberships except seniors have a $100 initial joining fell as well.

It is expensive to live here....

Here the single membership is $39 a month and the family membership is $79 a month.

There is a $100 sign up fee but they are always doing things at our Y to cancel out that cost. Sometime they do donation drives, say you bring in a bag of groceries or a bookbag with school supplies.

It is expensive but around where I live if you dont want to go there, then you have to drive at leave 20 minutes each way.

I thought the same thing. I recently joined and love it. The cost of swim lessons were cut in half. There is a play room for my kids to go to ifI want to take a class. The only class I have taken was a step class and I'm way outta shape, but the instructor was very encouraging. They have fitness instructors that will follow you for 12 weeks at a tiemwhile you work on there routine... It is really a great thing for us during these long ohio winters.. well worth the cost. I even got a part time job to pay for it.

Our family membership costs us $105 a month, that is $1260 a year. We have a family of 7, so it was worth it for us. The swim lessons at our location are free with our membership.

We live in a suburb of MPLS/St. Paul. Our family membership is $100/mo. This includes everyone ( fam currently of 7) being able to take one non-swim class per session free. The big draw for us was that they have home school gym & swim classes. We only pay $20 per kid for swim classes, gym classes are free each session for them.
I recently had joint replacement on both knees and where I go for PT is in the same building as a brand new Y. MY PT has me doing an independent PT program at the Y that is in the same building, no extra cost to me cuz we already have a Y membership, would cost a lot more if I didn't already have a membership.
$100/mo is a lot for my fam to pay, but we would end up paying much more for individual gym or swim classes for us at any other place. And especially here in MN, we really need a place to get exercise during our long winters.

We had a family membership and paid $79.00 a month for it...so $948.00 a year. Not to bad for a family of 7 but we just did not use it. We signed up during the free registration month so that saved us $150.00. We fianlly canceled during the summer. It was so packed and they have a summer camp at our location so kids were every where. I might sign back up after the new year because I did like going. The kids loved swimming and hubby and I liked working out.

Wow, the activities sound great. I really had no idea!

Do you have to sign a contract? Because that's why I have not joined a gym. Do you pre-pay or is it month to month?

Around here you don't have to sign a contract. You pay every month (they deduct it out of your checking account). The only thing you have to watch is if you want to cancel you need to make sure it is before the 30 of the month or you will be charged even though they don't deduct the fees until the 15th.

We have a family membership for $72 a month which is $864 a year. I think this is worth it also because of the cheaper classes offered there - karate and swimming - that we would do anyway somewhere else for more money. They also have date nights where they watch the kids for $10 a kid for 5 hours and they feed them.

Also, I have 3 kids and they enjoy it. One of them is 2 1/2 and I need the break from her and this is perfect!

The Y's near me work out to something like $400ish for a single membership for the year, plus the joining fee. That's a bit higher than some of the gyms near me, but most of them also have a nicer atmosphere than a lot of the chain gym places. Personally, I work out at the fitness center affiliated with my company and pay right around $200/year. There's no indoor pool (most of the Y's have pools) and it can get crowded on weeknights right after work, but otherwise, it's a great deal. Even better now that my employer is reimbursing fitness center fees up to $250/year. So, effectively, it costs me nothing.
