Would you have done something???

This happened not to far from my house, in fact I pass it every morning on my way to work. The bridge has a lot of traffic and I don't know why but all I keep thinking is why didn't one of those passing cars stop and see if he was ok instead of saying they saw him get out of the car and climb the railing. I go over that bridge every day and I know if all of a sudden I saw the car in front of me pull over and the driver open his door I would immeidately pull over and ask if he/she needed assistance or if I noticed anything odd while talking to them I'd call 911. If you were traveling over a bridge which has been a known place for people to commit suicide and all of a sudden noticed the car in front of you, next to you etc pull over and the driver get out, what would you do???

SAYREVILLE — A 21-year-old Old Bridge man leaped to his death off the Victory Bridge Tuesday morning.

Police said Francis Ancheta, 21, of Old Bridge parked his gray 2001 Nissan Altima on the northbound shoulder of the bridge just before 8:45 a.m.

Police said several witnesses saw Ancheta get out of the car, climb over the railing and jump into the Raritan River.

Ancheta was recovered by the Perth Amboy Fire Department's water rescue unit.

He was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. He was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m. Police said no note was found in the car.

I probably wouldn't have stopped. Too many nut cases now a days. If I saw him climbing the rail, I'd call 911 (and hope he was going to wait a few minutes before jumping).

While I know there are a lot of nutcases out there these days I have a very kind and caring heart I would have stopped and called 911 also and tried to talk to the person sometimes it takes a stranger to make someone realize life is worth living. I would like to think someone would do the same thing for me in a similiar situation.

No way would I stop. I would have called 911, but I would never endanger my own life in that way. Besides, just because they witnessed it, doesn't mean they were close enough to stop him.

I probably would have stopped, especially during the day. I've pulled over my car when I've seen people who've appeared to be in distress, as long as they didn't look like they were going to hurt me. I've had people slow down to ask if I was okay when I'd stopped for someone else, and I really appreciated it. If you can distract someone who's suffering a depressive episode, you can probably slow them down long enough to get help. It may just delay the inevitable, but sometimes, human contact can be worth a lot.

Absolutely not!!! Sorry, I've been in that area, I would NOT have stopped. In fact, I'd like to hope I wasn't in that area, but, the ?? was "if you saw it".

What if that guy getting out had a gun and shot you??? Sorry, I have a family to worry about. Or, what if another car coming across the bridge rear ended you and YOU went over the side??? I believe in helping my fellow man/woman, but, not at the risk of putting myself in danger.

I probably would have called 911 to alert them to someone stopped on the bridge, tho.

That's a sad thing when someone takes their own life.

No, I wouldn't have stopped, but I would have called 911 and prayed the police got there really quickly. You never know about people. He could have had a gun or if you got too close, he could have pulled you over the edge with him. It's sad that our society has gotten to this point to where we're so scared of another person, but that's just the way it is now.

I usually have my kids in the car so I would call 911 but not stop.

I wouldn't have stopped because of the same reasons posted above...I would have been afraid that he may have had a gun and tried to hurt me...sad, but true. I definitely would have called 911 though...Such a sad story... ~Lisa

A few years ago, a nurse was driving home with her three kids (ages from like 3-9). There was someone stranded on the side of the hwy, and she pulled off to help them. As she was getting out of her car to go up to the other a semi came past and hit her. Killed her instantly, kids saw everything. So for me, I would not have gotten out, but I would have called for help!

ITA. As a person who has known what bad bouts of depression were like, I would have to stop and see if I could help in any way. I'm one of these people who wouldn't be able to live with themselves if they just drove past and didn't stop. I would be worried all day that something would have happened.
