Married daughter has a cat that is about 15-16 years old. Cat was always healthy, but overweight. Never had any problems before this year. Didn't want to eat and still losing weight. After nearly $2000 in bills (glad it isn't me paying, as I couldn't afford it), the vet said it had bad infection or cancer because of high white cell count. They couldn't find any tumors unless hidden that they can't see on x-rays. Kidneys and heart are fine, so they won't put it to sleep. Meanwhile it still won't eat, though it does drink. Now daughter is trying to feed with a syringe. It is on a 3 or 4 week course of antibiotics, and now is starting to have yellow puss coming out its eyes. Vet says that is infection leaving body? My question is does that sound right to you? Can it take that long to clear an infection in a cat? Something doesn't sound right to me, but I don't think she will take her to anyone else. Thanks! |

I would definitely take the cat to a different vet. I don't understand the antibiotics for 3 or 4 weeks - I have only had experience with antibiotics for one week and the problem was gone. At that time my cat did has puss coming out of his eyes - however it wasn't that bad and our vet said it was pretty much a "cold" in cats. He always only gives 1 week antibiotics and after that he is back to normal. I wish you luck and the kitty too!

I'm so sorry about your daughter's cat. ![]() I had a cat, that age 10 was diagnosed with liver disease. He lived for another year (almost to the day of diagnosis) with daily medication. Here is a link to some info (some of your cat's symptoms fit the description): Feline Liver Disease ~ Pawprints and Purrs, Inc. HTH, Holly |

Thanks for all the posts. I think I finally have her talked into going somewhere else. She was trusting them, as there is a group of docs there and they all think the same thing. Philly is too far from us, as we are about 45 miles North yet of Harrisburg. Those symptoms from the link that you sent do sound alot like what Stormy has. On the upside, the cat is now eating more, the coat is looking better, and she is moving around more. I just hope that she takes her for a second opinion and that whatever it is, that it doesn't come back right away. The cat is up there in years, but daughter doesn't want to have her put to sleep unless it is really terminal. Thanks again!
