Finders....Keepers......

Is not always a good thing- Leaving work today, in the parking lot, I found, of all things, a live parakeet. He was just hopping around. Where I work there are really no houses close by, so not quite sure where he came from. I couldn't just leave him there, so I scooped him up in a hat that was in my car, and brought him home....................................... Right now we have him in a fish tank (don't worry, there's no water in it!) It has a screened top. We put newspaper in the bottom and DS found a nice branch outside. As soon as the little guys come home from school, I'll go get some food and supplies. I sure hope someone is looking for him. With a Great Dane in the house, I'm not sure how that's going to work. Cute little fella'-just chirping away. So if someone knows of someone who lost a parakeet in Chesapeake, pls let me know ASAP!!!!!!!!!!! Good grief......

Bless your heart for taking the time to take him. He wouldn't have survived outside, plus with his bright colors, he would probably attract a predator. Crazy where you found him. As far as trying to find out about a lost pet, you can post or check craigslist for your area.

I love parakeets - I've had 3 in my life. We have a cat now, so not a good idea!

However, my cousin had one as a kid and it always sat on her head. One day she forgot he was there and went outside and she never saw him again.

That is so sweet of you to save him. If you end up keeping him, your dog should get used to him. As long as he's in a cage they should be fine together. We have dogs , cats and a cockatiel and they are all fine together.

Maybe leave your name with the SPCA in case the owners call. I am really glad you found the little guy..Parakeets are alot of fun, can be taught to sit on your finger, and even mimic words. In England they call them Budgies.
If you end up keeping him, take him to the pet shop in a small box and ask them to show you how to clip his wings (Its very easy) so he does not want to fly away again, and you can begin finger training him. They also love mirrors and sprays of millet, and will dance around in front of the mirror, like he is impressing a mate.
They are really nice pets, but also have the habit of thowing the seed shells outside of their cages, so just be prepared to either sweep or vac there once a day. Also, check a second hand store for a proper cage (like Sal Army), if you do end up keeping him. Cages can be expensive. (Dont get a wooden finch cage, parakeets can chew through the wood).

They sound like bright, fun little birds, so if you think you could handle another pet, this might be a good one. Brendasm1 had a lot of practical advice. I wish I knew more about birds, but you were so kind to take this one in!

Awwwww Linnybop, I would tell you he was mine but I don't think mine flew from NC to Chesapeake....and he's been gone for 5 years now But on the good note, it sounds like your DS is interested and that could be a good thing if you don't find the "parents." Good Luck

mmmm Tammy, stranger things have happened! Do you want him back??? No really, I don't mind!!! So far, he is doing well. I have checked the papers for missing pets, and did post on Craigslist-thanks for that advice. I have had a couple of ppl email to say they would take him if the owner doesn't come forth. Not quite sure yet what we will do w/ him. The dog really has no interest in the bird whatsoever, so I guess that's good. I worked in a pet store when I was younger, so I do know how to clip the wings. Just haven't decided if that's safe for him if he does have to flee from the dog. Thanks for the advice on the Salvation Army for a cage-wouldn't have thought of that either. You know, as I get older, I truly do believe that G*d does have a good sense of humor.....Like he thinks I need ONE more thing to take care of-lol....

Parakeets only live about 5-7 years. Some say 10+, but I have never known any to live that long. They're not like parrots & cockatiels. My last one only lived 3. I don't know what happened to him. I even took him to the vet and had some sort of vitamin drops to give him and he still died.

I had a parakeet my mother gave me for a wedding present. He lived to be 9 going on 10...about two months from 10 years. So yes, they can live a long time. Geez, now I'm sad cause I miss my "Baby Bird". Heh, and we've been married for 21 years...
